Rumours are that Cummins might play in the second Test after all.

Which would make naming a squad even more pointless than it already is

Unless you wanted the opposition to prepare in the knowledge that someone isn't going to be in that side. Equally, as we've consistently done, our tendency to name the starting XI 24hrs if not 48hrs in advance of the toss, has given the opposition an added advantage.

Jacks is not an all rounder

    He is a batsman.

The last test he played, he bowled something like 8 overs compared to Joe Roots 31 overs, so that shows how highly rated his bowling is

We might have left ourselves with a bit of a problem in going in a bowler short. It makes Stokes part of the cake rather than the icing of being the fifth bowler and one wonders what that will mean as the series goes on. It's probably not so much a risk in this specific Test as the game probably won't last that long.

Moving forward, though, Jacks scoring runs might create a bit of a selection headache even more so in respect of the balance of the side. Stokes has come out today in saying Bashir is still our number one spinner even if he has played just the one match since July (the warm up game in which he returned 2-151 and bowled one maiden from his 24 overs). As soon as he comes on to bowl, he will be targeted too.

Might be unpopular (and won’t happen) but I want Stokes bowling with the new pink ball, he’d be so dangerous

I agree although, ideally, any of the seamers will want to take it during that period from the time the light starts to deteriorate. It's the accumulative affect on Stokes that concerns me moving forward. That said, if we lose this Test and we can't win the Ashes back anyway so he has to be utilised to the maximum.

Not sure how wise it will be, but I reckon Cummins is going to play the second test.

I think we should have played Tongue rather than Jacks.

Jacks' selection makes a lot of sense, although it's the selectors admitting that the batting is a problem. He's there surely partly as insurance in case there is yet another collapse
Also, we still have four pace bowlers and a spinner who's just better than Root

As for Wood, it's a 'Charltonisedation' situation, selecting a man whose fitness is always gonna be a big gamble, and the gamble not paying off

I have to give Credit to Starc, He is on top of his form.  We have no chance. This is gong to be a 5-0 whitewash.  We might be betting in less than 2 hours at this rate.

I am going to guess that we will get less than 150 first innings.

Root so nearly out now too. Really wish we’d just bowled first so I wasn’t so miserable so soon

If it wasn't for Starc we'd have half a chance.

me too. As son as he said bat first I groaned. I am only awake because I have been taking sleeping tablets and they make sleep for about 12 hours then another 6. So i am wide awake at the moment. I am certain Crawley will be gone soon.
