A 40yr old GK, not for me.
    This.

Especially as we have greater needs. Strikers & attacking midfielders/wingers first. Thats where money should be spent....be it fees or wages. Not some 40 year old has been.

We know Jones wants an experienced keeper. We won’t be bringing in someone to be number two.

Nathan wants to bring in a keeper who is capable of being a number 1 in the championship but he may let Will Mannion start with the shirt and see how his shot stopping is in the Championship.
Mannion commanded his box and took the high ball well but he will be busier than he was over the last 5 months of the season in most matches.
I personally hope Will steps up but we can't be sure so we need another keeper to fight for the keeper's jersey.

AMB isn't a bad keeper but I didn't feel the defence had the same confidence in him and he isn't as calm as Mannion so he may go out on loan.

  • Asked my West Ham supporting mate for his opinion. (Seriously)
“Good for the most part but capable of howlers”

He also said we should go for Vladi Coufal
That’s why he got the nickname Flapianski when he was at arsenal.
I’d rather look for better value. He won’t be cheap wages wise.
We’ve got more pressing needs than using wages on him.
If we started with Mannion I wouldn’t be too upset tbh.
AMB on the other hand is average lge 1 and decent league 2
  • Fabianski would be a solid number one at this level but I wouldn’t want us to spunk all of our wage budget on him and it wouldn’t make sense for us to do so.

I’d rather us pay a higher fee for an up and coming keeper that has a resale value, This should be our strategy for the whole squad. We should be looking to splash the cash on players that have a higher probability of appreciating. This is the model we need to deploy if we are going to one day get  back to the prem and has been tried and tested as seen via Brentford.

I rate Mannion and was glad we signed him having watched him keep Cambridge in the game against us in the previous season 1-1 at there place. But last season he was beaten from distance fairly easily and comfortably several times. In fact it was around the first 2 months or so of the season we were in a phase of conceding a long range effort most games. If it happens once you can put it down to bad luck but it happened a lot and most times it looked like Mannion had concrete boots on with limited reach. Would love to see him improve on that side of the game but we're going to be facing a lot of shots from distance I expect this season and unless Mannion improves in that area I feel we need to bring in better.

Beaten from distance when we weren’t the team we became.
That’s more down to the outfield players.

  • Undermines the younger goal keeping coach a bit doesn't it?
  • I think our plan with Mannion was for him to develop into a championship number 1. He is not that yet, but a year learning from a premier league goalkeeper could really help, before he takes over later in the season or next season
  • I think it's a really interesting conundrum. I can completely understand the thinking behind a veteran signing like Fabianski. But I can also see the thinking behind spending a fee on a long term No1 like say Wickens at Lincoln.

Personally I'd go for the latter

I still reckon we will go for Walton... Should be available,  known to Jones and is a good keeper
Would make a lot of sense , Alex Palmer will be No1 there and Walton being 29 is at the age where he's got to go somewhere and establish himself and not be constantly loaned out.

Yes because this is how it works. We should also be buying strikers first because otherwise it means we're prioritising defence which is boring and doesn't win you games.

Can't wait for us not to sign a keeper and you bang on all winter about how we should have signed a more experienced one in the summer....
  • Obviously big if, but that to me would really show the difference between being in L1 and the champ. Absolutely mad to consider
  • Wasn’t the rumour that we were going after the Lincoln keeper

I think the rumour was he had already signed on the expiry of his contract…. Shows what people know

It was a Charlton Chronicles scoop and everything

  • I’m pretty sure with the career he has had the wages are not that high on his priority list. If he wants to stay in London I’m sure either us or Orient would suit his needs
  • I can't profess to be an expert in the players themselves, but I like the fact we seem to be going for players in their early 20s rather than early 30s journeyman types - hopefully gets more.energy in the team, means we're planning more long term than short, and they'll likely have better resale value too.

Now I've said that, watch us sign Shelvey or Victor Moses or something.
    Or Fabianski!
  • A back up keeper who will probably never play.
Do I hear Scott Carson knocking on the door.

If he’s on 65k a week at west ham, I’d shudder at the thought of even paying him 10% of that - 6.5k will probably make one of our highest paid players if not the highest.   I don’t know what we’re paying players on average these days, but seem to recall 6k a week was rumoured to be what that melon Scott Fraser was on.  I don’t think Aneke was far off that too.  I appreciate that now we’re in the Championship those sorts of wages for a few players are probably inevitable, but I would prefer that to be going to someone who is going to have a bigger impact on the season.

not saying he can’t do a job/plus the coaching element, but that’s a lot of money to be paying someone his age for that position given our current wage structure
I heard Lloyd Jones was on about £6-7k after he signed his new deal, and I expect there was a nice promotion increase in there too.

I would imagine players like Docherty and Berry are on decent wages too given their experience and after dropping down from higher divisions.

One signs players as and when they are available. Signing a defender first doesn’t mean you have prioritised defence.
Everyone wants to sign a striker and they tend to be towards the end of the window.
