I am surprised so many people think Macca is up to Championship standard. Plymouth didn't and neither do I. The fear is, he will drag us deeper against quicker forwards, defence will be isolated from midfield, and them from attack, undermining our press and letting teams waltz through our ranks of three.
I think he has, at the very least, earnt a chance at the champ. None of us on here anticipated how much he would improve last season so I wouldn't write him off.
Comparing the current ownership to anything Matt Southall promised is absolutely wild. The current owners have put their money where their mouths are to appoint NJ, Will Abbot, Dane Murphy as high calibre appointments. Hardly think NJ is signing that big new contract if he's been told by the owners that he's shopping in Poundland for freebies, I doubt we'll have a top half budget and smash our transfer record but there will be a good budget there and then it's down to Chapple and NJ to get to work and do the hard sell to players on why sign for us.
Not concerned at all this early in the window , the whole championship seems on a go slow signing wise. Probably not helped by the U21 Euros, CWC going on.
Personally don't think it is that wild. It is just two different personalities/viewpoints. I am difficult to convince/a pessimist/ glass half empty type, then you have the opposite who are more open to giving people a chance.
I will never forget how much respect Katrien had on here and Southall, I always thought they were worms. Not having a pop at anyone who did like those two, but I knew something was off immediately. Sometimes you believe what you want to believe.
Lee Bowyer was a no nonsense credible character, just like Jones, yet he still believed what wasn't true.
I am not saying they're con men like Southall, far from it, I just don't and have never believed we will get the financial backing we might need. They have even said themselves we are a year ahead of where they expected us to be. How can a club who are a Championship side historically be above projections being in a League we historically belong in? Statements like that make me sceptical of the ambition. And the whole talk of being clever to avoid FFP utilising the academy which translates in my book to "don't expect us to spend much money".
It is very early doors and like I said, I would be delighted to be extremely wrong as I want to see Charlton do well more than my judgment be correct. I am just expecting a disappointing window.
It's quite simple. The club are saying that they had a plan and in the plan we had budgeted to get promoted next season.
How can you budget for something like that though? As history shows that usually when you don't get promoted you likely lose players. A fair few of our players would be off had we not get promoted I imagine, then we would have needed to replace them again.
Just doesn't sound like a sound strategy to me, suppose we will never know anyway as that's not what happened.
See your point, just think that is a risky strategy.
Macca deffo deserves a chance, was arguably our best player/most important player second half of the season when you consider how crucial his goals were in the end along with the clean sheets record, and that he scored the winner at Wembley.
It would just be sensible to have a good back up to push him or take his place if he can't replicate his league1 form. That is the sensible approach, and I think he himself will know that as a player who has been dropped by a championship side before.
The club said there’d be an interview with him once it was confirmed so I would guess either not yet or only recently.
I know his appointment was subject to EFL clearance but with his employment record I would have thought that would be a formality. Perhaps the EFL are all on holiday or only meet to discuss such matters every ten years. Maybe Dane is on holiday.
Probably busy finalising the fixtures that are released tomorrow, and in chats with Sky about how many times they can show Wrexham live.
Interesting how we dont get transfer leaks from Dubai and Reams any more now Charlie has gone, despite them both saying before that Charlie wasn't the source.

Never said Charlie wasn’t the leak, he just wasn’t my source, and not all was leaked from him..
My understanding reading that snippet on the Sheffield Wednesday forum is that their players are due to report in on Thursday, presumably tomorrow. I wonder if it is the same for our players, or maybe the play off campaign has pushed things back.
Didn’t Jones literally say the list we are working from is the same whether we were in the championship or not.
Just that being in the championship will make it easier.
He did but I do find that hard to believe
Depressing if true
Why
Because we shouldn't be in the market for players who want want to sign for a league 1 club, while trying to not be relegated from the championship
Like Lloyd Jones, Conor Coventry, Kayne Ramsay, Macaulay Gillesphey, Matt Godden and Josh Edwards? Those sorts of players?
As far as my memory goes, they were signed to get us out of league1, not signed for us to prosper in the Championship. If all of our players come from league 1 we will struggle.
In reality, few of the players we ought to be targeting as a Championship club would have signed for us in L1.
It's fine having a common list, but in reality if we hadn't gone up, then the best players would have turned us down. It's like those summers when Spurs are linked with various superstars, who never end up joining them.
Certainly not anywhere near being "in the know", but have every faith in Nathan getting in the players he feels he needs based on how things progressed and the season finished last year, subject to the budget of course. The names mentioned so far on this thread sound like a good starting point, sure something will be announced soon, and certainly hope we will see a few new faces when we land in Slovenia for the pre-season...COYR
I completely agree with east terrace comment. Enjoy the good weather and chill I have more confidence in this manager his team and owners to get it right than I have for years going back to Curbs

If you read it that way. The way I think he meant was we aim high for players whatever league we’re in, but we’re more likely to get those highest up our list if we’re in the Championship
Yeah maybe, but would we ever really compete with Championship wages in league 1 ? Personally I hope we shoot higher, but i seem to be in a minority with that, I think a lot of people are forgetting how competitive the league is.

Been a while since the debate on wages - thought I’d share I’ve heard from the Blackpool end Carey was rumoured to have turned down £8k a week from them.
I’d imagine we matched or got close to that as a bare minimum?
If that’s the case , a few people I know need to wake up to the fact that Charlton Athletic will make a big losse this coming season.
Would we really have brought Phil Chapple in to then only buy sh1t players or even no players? I think we can all chill for at least a month before getting worried.

Even then, we wont really know how the season is truly going to pan out... the comments on here when we replaced May with Godden for example, weren't exactly predicting what actually happening last season!! - Need to enjoy the journey whilst we can, its going to be more bumpy than last season, but some need to try and have a bit of faith, given how things turned out.
The Transfer Window Threads on here never change... Doing your business early doesnt guarantee success
We have an ownership group that seem willing to adapt and learn from their mistakes and put their hands in their pockets both on and off the pitch.
We have a new CEO who has a proven track record of overseeing transfers that push the team to the next level.
We have a new head of recruitment, who not only has a proven record with us, but also with the current manager whilst at Luton.
And importantly we have a manger driving this whole process who a proven track record at our level of improving teams and pushing them upwards.
Does that mean next season will be a cake walk for us? Of course not, it is never that simple. However the evidence at hand is that we are not going to about the wrong way trying to do it. Getting worried due to lack of signings now, or because under the most mental ownership group we are the football league has seen 'we were promised' the same - seems like just wanting to get worried for worrieds sake.

Common sense tbh Better division better players who demand more money and give you a chance of surviving or progressing to better things,on the other hand we could tread water slog it out and go back down again and make less of a loss but still a loss at that.
League One is actually as we know very difficult to get promoted out of. Unless you throw a lot of money at it you need a very good manager, some luck and sensible ownership. Now that we’ve managed to achieve that, any possibility of going back down should terrify the ownership. A disaster doesn’t do it justice. If the ownership want to progress the club then the very first and next thing that needs to be done is secure our status in The Championship. The list of clubs going to struggle next season doesn’t look very extensive to me.
We will sign 6 players none of us have heard of, for very little money. Hopefully they will be good enough to get us into 21st place, which is what we should be realistically expecting and hoping for. All the rest of the bluster on here is pretty pointless.

I mean we should chill, but not after another month from now.
