Do enjoy seeing these kind of comments. So many expect us to spend nothing and go back to L1.

It’s most likely from the extra TV and gate money the club is/will get from moving from L1 to the Championship being channeled to strengthening the squad. Given Nathan delivered last season and the owners will have seen and experienced the claims about the potential the club has weren’t bullshit they’ve decided to back him. It wouldn’t surprise me if one or two had spoken to Bowyer at Wembley and heard, or read comments from fans, that his promotion season was wasted for want of a bit more backing in the transfer market. They will also see the results of their fellow countrymen backing Birmingham and Wrexham in the transfer market and now that if you go all in it can pay off.
The increase might cover the fees, but there will also be a significant increase in the wage bill from signings, likely promotion wage increases for current players and a few new contracts too.
If they came into this with a realistic plan then they would have expected to have to cover the net shortfall for running the club anyway for at least the first 2 seasons (then decide whether to carry on or sell up). Promotion at the first attempt was a massive bonus and an opportunity they really shouldn’t pass up on.
  • I won't believe Kelman is signing until i see the pen in hands. The thing that worries me is that Reams is somehow involved in the rumour and I've given up on how many times he has got things wrong.
I don't understand, Charlie left two months ago.

I’d like to personally apologise to Linfieldos and the guy who leaked this on the other forum. I was wrong to doubt you.

They have been added to the ITK list.

I have not posted on here in the past and posted the info I had on the other forum because I knew how skeptical everyone would be. Kelman done, the Japanese player I was told about has now been cooled but Knibbs is still being worked on.

Also had Joe Bennett in for a look in training this past week. Not sure if his name turns up as a trialists today but was at SL for a couple of days.
    Thanks Matty!

Saw this quoted on X, I remember seeing it at the time - Kelman scoring from his own half for Southend as a 17 year old.
    Just wow!

That's some tekkers and self-belief to score from that distance.

  • Jury's out for me on Kelman. It took him a good few seasons to find any kind of goalscoring form in League One including looking pretty powder puff up front while on loan at Gillingham. Who's to say the same won't happen in the Championship?

I think then it’s important that we don’t all get on his back if he doesn’t hit the ground running. I’d imagine he’ll start the season as a ‘finisher’ with Leaburn after Oloafe, Campbell and Apter have run the defenders into the ground.

Such an exciting signing and Charlton now thinking about succession planning is something I never thought I’d see again!

Jury is out is obvious for all signings - some will work out, some won’t.  He will be reliant on service and will need a partner - it’s up to Jones to find the right blend .  Nonetheless , we’re doing a lot more in the market than anyone expected .
  • Safe to say, I am a bit excited about the Charlie Kelman talk

There's always a risk with any striker from a lower league but for me as a striker you're only as good as your last season. The number of times people on here have suggested over the years a striker who used to do it at League One but hadn't done for 2+ years you'd see the comments like "if they can get back to top form" etc the trouble is usually strikers once they start going downhill they don't often come back to form.

Always better to have a striker on the up who scored plenty last season than someone with a reputation who was prolific but for one reason or another hasn't done it for 12-18 months or so.
  • I’m not especially shocked by the spending. It is, undoubtedly, a big step change from what we’ve become used to, but it’s still relatively modest by Championship standards and a reflection of the gap between our squad and a competitive Championship level squad. It’s probably a bit more in terms of fees than I thought but voices from inside the club, including NJ, did say we’d be giving it a go so I certainly wasn’t expecting a Roland style ambitionless skimp and save type window either. It’s not like we’ve been going out and paying the kinds of fees and wages required to get other Championship teams’ best players. If you want a solid championship player then a million plus is not exorbitant.

The signings we’ve made are picking up some if the better ones from the division below or ones out of favour in the Championship and with a bit of a point to prove. That’s a bit of perspective to keep the keep in mind and, even with what we’ve been going in the transfer market, important to remember that just staying up will be a great achievement. However, what I really like and am encouraged by is these have been exactly the sort of signings that Curbs used to make and were the found of a very successful decade or so for us.

Im tempering my excitement a little, but its been a hugely encouraging summer so far.

    2nd attempt.

Is it Harvey Knibbs we're rumoured to be in for?
  • Top scorer in L1 but I don't really know anything else about Kelman.  Still excited.  Well done the owners for supporting Jones.

  • It's been an interesting window, signing  players with experience or potential.

But like Curbs and Chris Powell before him, NJ is all about signing players with the right character to fit in with his team ethos.

Remember, "The whole is greater than the sum of its parts"
  • RC confirms Joe Bennett is on trial and with the squad today.

Fuckin ‘kelman there’s a shark in the water
With all these new signings, we're gonna need a bigger boat!

Players improve, I doubt his form will drop off to the level he was at while at Gillingham.

The alternatives would all be gambles too.

A young PL striker on loan has even less experience and their clubs expect game time.

Proven Championship players are too expensive.

Older strikers could be on the way down, still demand big wages and a key part of our game is high energy, a lot of pressing and winning second balls.

Strikers from abroad might take time to settle or not settle at all.

Kelman is about as good as we could get in terms of being proven in the league below. Kone was attracting even bigger offers than the rumoured £3m or so we’re paying for Kelman.

I’m excited about this one even though there’s no guarantee he makes the step up. I think it’s worth the risk. One more season like last year and he’d be getting bigger offers above our budget.
  • No Ramsey in the Cambridge squad…

I think he'll likely at least take a year to get ready at this level if he reaches his full potential, but still seems the perfect signing to make now whilst we have Godden at a level and can bed him in. We aren't going to be able to sign a sure thing at this level.
