  • Sounds like something that might have happened a year ago rather than now.
  • That Leaburn link is complete rubbish you click on the actually website and it has other ridiculous transfer rumours that make no sense
  • No one is paying 3.5m for leaburn when they can wait and see how his fitness is this season and then get him for a fraction of that amount next summer

£3.5m plus add ons is a great deal for us imo
That is absolutely ridiculous to believe 3.5m is a good deal
Indeed. It would be a fucking amazing deal.

What if a club waits till next summer, miss out on him, and he turns into the next Harry Kane - Highly unlikely but its why teams will tend to take the risk.

If a club has the money to burn these days, they tend to take the risk because they can afford it. If Leaburn has a stormer of a season; Hertha BSC will probably be one of the last clubs he'd consider joining compared to now.

That is true but 3.5m is too much. With a year on his deal and injury issues I think we’d be lucky to get 2m this summer

I’m hoping with our promotion that we can get him on a new contract
  • It’s a tough balancing act though, if we give Small 10k a week then every player will be knocking on Jones door asking for similar

Yes, it's the same as when Bauer went there, they can just afford more wages than us.

Look at their wage bill compared to ours (not sure how accurate but probably won't be far off)

But that is the championship. Most decent players are on 5 figures a week.

Oxford United have multiple players on 5 digits a week and then the higher end of the thousands.

This is championship football, the wages are genuinely crazy.

Selling Leaburn now would be daft.  He’s had a rough time with injuries but he has literally only just stopped growing.  His body is constantly adjusting to the stresses it goes through so it’s expected it will fail at at times.  Hopefully he’ll get a full Nathan pre-season into him and come out of the blocks flying.
As much as I like him, and recognise his ceiling, if 3.5 million were true, we'd be daft to turn it down.

That could change our season. Too much money to ignore for someone who doesn't start for us, and we don't know if he can get back to his best now.

That said, I can't see anyone paying a fee like that after all the injuries.
  • Can’t see anywhere offering him a 5 year deal, he’s young but deals that long don’t happen much outside of the top tier
  • 1. Doubt it’s true from a random fan account

    2. We can’t stop other teams paying over the odds for unproven young players - we don’t even know if he’ll make the step up, so 10k p/w on a five year contract would be horrendous for the club

    3. The challenge is finding better, for cheaper - we got a better left back (Edwards) last summer and I’m sure we can find a better winger this summer

Is it a case of affording more wages than us or just willing to pay more wages and rack up more losses but retain Championship status?

They clearly pay more for being an established Championship team but they average 16.5k gates and don't receive parachute money so not sure how they afford to pay wages other than just paying the going rate to stand still. I find them a really curious case, certainly feel they could be in potential relegation trouble this season.

So the question really is how ambitious are our owners? are they willing to match the likes of Preston's wage bill and how quickly will they do that? will our best players then want new contracts with wages to match? again all roads lead to the owners

  • Just for clarity he doesn’t play for England U21s, he played 1/2 games for the U20s due to others pulling out

Exactly, if we don’t compete on wages we’ll go straight back down.

I doubt we were limited to paying under £5k for everyone last season, it’s probably that not much of a stretch to start paying £10k a week.

So he has still played for England at an international level at some capacity.

The point is, he's no schmuck, and will be on a lot of radars.

Not being rude, but I think you're underestimating the magnitude of this league and its wage structure.

I am not saying it is right, and I don't expect the club to pay it, but these are the going rates.

He is 20, English, plays for the England u21s, has Premier league pedigree, has interest from Blackburn, Millwall, Preston and God knows who else.

10k a week is not a lot of money for a player of that talent in the Championship. All there is to it.

If we aren't willing to pay those sort of wages, we will have to find some real gems to compete.
Who said we aren’t willing to pay those wages? We probably will, for the right player.

I’m saying I don’t think it’s smart to overpay for an unproven young player who hasn’t had success anywhere else but in SE7. He’s struggled against any full back who can match his pace and physicality - it’ll only get harder for him a level up. Good luck to him if a club is silly enough to pay it.

I have every confidence we find the gems you are worried we won’t. In fact, I bet we finish above Preston in the league table, regardless of which club Thierry Small ends up at.

Everyone’s contract will have had a promotion wage increase written in so I’m sure we’ve got players not far off that already now

Agreed but the U20s team is a weird one because the proper elite talent tend to bypass it and go straight to the 21s. Still high pedigree of course but not the same as if it was the 21s.

I’m of the view that the longer this goes on the more chance there is that he signs with us for a year, that’s if Jones would take him after what could be viewed as a possible lack of commitment
  • Also Josh Bowler on that list was on loan to them for the first half of the season from Forest so they wouldn't have been paying the full £30k and the second guy on the list Okkels spent the second half of the season on loan at Aberdeen and I'd be amazed if they were loaning out their top earner, so either that wage is a poor guess or they're not the type of club to base budgets on because they're clearly turd at it

Last season we done really well. The reports look like we had the 8th highest budget (despite being told we were top4) and fair play to Jones, he got us promoted. Identified some real gems as well in Edwards, Ramsay etc.

The issue is now, we are without a doubt operating with the lowest wage structure. 8th to to the top 6 was just 1.4 million isn't too unrealistic to keep up with. Whole different structure now.

The owners are going to have to take the hit if we want survival, it's just how it goes nowadays, or risk being a club like Rotherham, Barnsley, Peterborough, Wigan etc.

Main thing is we have Jones, with him and his style we have a chance. Just disappointing that we can't offer competitive wages.
