Rumoured fee of 10k a week. Which is less than the going rate in this league.
It’s a tough balancing act though, if we give Small 10k a week then every player will be knocking on Jones door asking for similar
But that is the championship. Most decent players are on 5 figures a week.
Oxford United have multiple players on 5 digits a week and then the higher end of the thousands.
This is championship football, the wages are genuinely crazy.
Exactly, if we don’t compete on wages we’ll go straight back down.
I doubt we were limited to paying under £5k for everyone last season, it’s probably that not much of a stretch to start paying £10k a week.
Last season we done really well. The reports look like we had the 8th highest budget (despite being told we were top4) and fair play to Jones, he got us promoted. Identified some real gems as well in Edwards, Ramsay etc.
The issue is now, we are without a doubt operating with the lowest wage structure. 8th to to the top 6 was just 1.4 million isn't too unrealistic to keep up with. Whole different structure now.
The owners are going to have to take the hit if we want survival, it's just how it goes nowadays, or risk being a club like Rotherham, Barnsley, Peterborough, Wigan etc.
Main thing is we have Jones, with him and his style we have a chance. Just disappointing that we can't offer competitive wages.
Competitive with whom, the league? Preston? nobody knows the wage budget we can or can't afford yet so its all speculation until we see something actually happen. Should Small leave for Preston then yes that would probably be a fair indicator of your point as why else would you go to Preston other than for the money?
Preston are perennial mid to lower Championship fodder, despite having had near enough a decade in this league to move on to challenging from promotion.
I’m not so sure that matching their valuations on players is the best yardstick for future success anyway.
Preston have been in the Championship for almost a decade.
In that time they have finished:
11th, 7th, 14th, 9th, 13th, 13th, 12th, 10th and now 20th.
I would love Charlton to have that kind of success for the next decade. They aren't exactly the biggest club, and have lived comfortably well within their means. Apart from this season, their lowest finish in 9 seasons was 14th, that is extremely impressive. Infact this is the only season where they finished lower table, they've been a mid-table or higher the whole time other than that.
In for some proper disappointment if you think Preston aren't a club we should strive to replicate in the short to mid term future, imagine a lot of people would take that over being a nothing league 1 club.
This is also kind of the point though. I fully anticipate Preston to finish anywhere between 10th and 20th next season. They’ve had enough stability over the last nine/ten years to likely feel comfortable taking a risk on a player they like.
We don’t have that luxury. We need to establish ourselves at the level by spending the money we do have appropriately.
You do need to take calculated risks though before it catches up to you.
Last season Hull and Preston finished 7th and 10th, to both finishing just above the drop this season, despite how good their squads are and all the years of being stable championship sides.
You are one bad season away from the drop every year in this league, you can get away with it in League 1 stagnating, can't be done in this league.
£8k+ for Berry and Doc is madness. I'm not sure either deserve a starting place, even in L1. Edwards, Ramsay and Jones on paupers wages, I don't think so.
Not really - Berry was a premier league player when before joining us

Where’s it been confirmed we can’t offer competitive wages?
If we ranked 8th in League1 for wages, where there was more leniency and less restrictions, what makes you think in the league above we will compete with wages?
For a fact, we won't be competing with at least roughly 18-20 teams in this league. Which is fine, I don't expect us to be, and would cost us millions.
Our direct competitors salary wise will be the likes of Pompey, Oxford, who already have players on a lot more than ours.
Time will tell, but like I said, this league is being severely underestimated, talk of a mid-table finish etc would be a miracle.
This is a mammoth task ahead, 21st would be a remarkable achievement and be one of our best achievements if we pull it off for a very long time.
Pretty sure we would have been higher than 8th this season. Probably only Birmingham, Huddersfield, Wrexham above us
Can PNE really afford four times a salary from Charlton?
Yes, it's the same as when Bauer went there, they can just afford more wages than us.
Look at their wage bill compared to ours (not sure how accurate but probably won't be far off)
That’s not even twice as much though (on average) is it. The report said ‘quadruple’ Small’s wages.
Small is listed at less than a grand a week on there, although that's obviously nonsense. Those sites aren't always accurate. Some of the salaries are right though, usually the more recognised players though.
I've heard he is on between 2-3k a week here. If he ends up on 11k a week at Preston, that would be quadrupling his wages or thereabouts.
The rumour is, they are offering 4x what he is on now, and our contract offer is half of what Preston is offering. Near the 6k mark.
Edit: to be clear none of this is for a fact, just what I've heard. If I am wrong, I am wrong. I hope what I have heard is wrong cause I want Small to stay.

Even if all true, we’re a Championship side now with a financial boost pending. Comparing this squad’s salaries from League One - when we’re going to now be able to afford to offer more - to a Championship club’s is a waste of time at this point in time. We don’t know what Charlton’s current offer is.
if he starts the season half decent, as a 20 year old, English player in the Championship….he’s easily gonna command a fee like that. If he can work on his final ball he’s as dangerous as TC and has as much pace, and more strength.
so it’s actually not that horrendous an idea.
Whether we’d pay it is another matter but I’m just saying we have moved up a level.

I was told he was on £800 /week when he first joined

Three pages of posters waffling on about made up numbers. I think this could trump any other as worst transfer rumour thread ever.
It isn't actually that much waffle. It's a rumours thread, these are all genuine rumours for the most part regarding salary. I also posted a player we were linked with potentially on the way to Plymouth, but that was glossed over (Fuller)
Just remembered as well what the club said about targets.
Our shopping was decided irrespective of promotion. I doubt we would be paying championship wages in League1 had we stayed down, hardly screams we will be competing with championship wages.
Look forward to our first signing as it will give us a decent idea.
I think its more likely that although the shopping list kay have been the same, the first three pages would have basically gone in the bin if we hadnt been promoted as none of the players would come to league one whatever the salary ans certainly not for a league one salary with a huge promotion bonus.
So a few years ago we were shopping Aldi, last summer we were mostly shopping on Clubcard points keeping those eyes out for bargains, question is which chain are we shopping in this summer!

Added context was that NJ said those at the top of list would be more likely to be realistic in the Championship, part of that will be down to wages

Pretty sure it was in the SLP which sadly means I can’t, either that or it was in an interview on Charlton Live

Fair enough, not saying I don't believe you btw, I'm just a sad sack and like to look at these articles etc.
Has Zach had a good enough season up there to warrant crack back with us next season? By accounts on here, he's done very well.
I’ve watched him play on Sky a couple of times and was very impressed. He’s at a minimum earned the right to force his way into the picture in preseason imo.

Anyway, here's the good part, one of their reputable posters from what I can tell shared this:
Which really conflicts with what I've read, hope the Preston guy is right.
