Lockyer as player/coach and 6th choice is probably fine.
We know Jones values having experienced players in our squad that know his style and can set the standards for the rest. Plenty of championship experience too, and if there’s a chance he could get back to even half the player he became at Luton then it could work out very well for us
No lols please but Chuks Aneke, what happened to him and is there any chance of a return to the starting line up or subs bench?? I know he was injured and saw him slow down but I think he is missed and what we have so far does not make up for what we miss.
Forget Swords Alive, this is Christ’s Alive posting

It’s all part of a plan to make the backroom staff NJ disciples, Fleming leaves at the end of the season and Hylton gets promoted, Lockyer takes Hylton’s role and Berry becomes player/coach
NJ confirming to Cawley that Wingback is the main target and not CB
Says " centre halves we are fine"
There's a line in there about players we're interested in "that maybe we could do at Christmas or maybe we could do now" which surely has to be about Fukuda?
I read that as a more general comment about how we scout and recruit - any well run club will have targets in the current window, and ones they monitor for the next few windows, e.g. players developing at a lower level, players who may replace a current player if they leave etc.
Not to say it won’t include Fukuda, but I don’t think it was a comment about a specific player.
I don't think we've got a lot of options if we want to bring in another centre back:
1. It's pretty late in the window and all of the decent, low cost/out of contract options will probably have been signed up already. 2. We're clearly looking for a back up option and the wages on offer will reflect that squad status. Those factors will limit the appeal of joining us to any decent player for this level looking to extend their career and get meaningful game time. 3. A loan from a lower division side is unlikey to be of the required calibre. 4. A premier league club will not be keen on loaning a young starlet knowing they are unlikely to get good game time/development.
Most of our transfer business in this window has been very good but it does feel like mistakes may have been made in signing the very injury prone Burke and in allowing Alex Mitchell to leave on loan. If NJ believed Zach Mitchell would be up to the job he seems to have revised that opinion based on ZM/s admittedly shaky performance at Cambridge - and that feels more than a little "knee-jerk".
On that basis it might be that the experienced and talented Lockyer might be the best of a bad set of options.
I think i read the other day that he was close to , or had just had, the all clear to start playing again .......
He would be absolutely mad to continue playing, surely his health is more important than money. I can't believe his family would be happy with him playing either. He has had two almighty let offs. Go into coaching or something if he wants to remain in football but for God's sake don't attempt another comeback.
What worries me and was highlighted on Tuesday, that when Lloyd is not playing how disorganised the defence is Hopefully Burke will be able to cover this position
I think Burke is covering Chucks position ........ In the treatment room

But you’d never going to have 3 young players in the back line at most Z Mitchell would be playing with two regular first team defenders … so he would not be isolated.
Exactly, you just wouldn't get more than one 1st choice defender out injured at a time.

He not in the treatment room been training for a few weeks now and Jones himself said he was fit

But now he's fit he'll be replaced by Lockyer 🙄.
FWIW. I thought Lockyer was a cracking player when he was with us but left a nasty taste in the mouth him having a relegation clause in his contract.
There are many cases of footballers playing with pacemakers for years after being fitted with no more heart problems whatsoever . If they thought it was likely to happen again he’d never get insurance.
I’d be more concerned about his physical fitness having not played for so long .
I'm not sure personally I wasn't in love with how quickly he ditched us after relegation (of which is drop off in form was a key factor)
But also he's not played since the terribly sad heart condition and only recently cleared to return, is he anywhere near the same player he was?
I'd like to see us look abroad for a new defender, there's not a lot of value or prospects in the UK, right now. WBA and Plymouth had great success and good value last season (Heggem cost £0.6m, sold for £10m, Talovierov bought for £1.5m, sold undisclosed)
To be fair, the only reason we got Lockyer in the first place was on the basis that he could leave for free if we got relegated. He put up with an absolute shitshow for a year and then left under the terms of his contract. He wasn't wrong to bet on himself either, after 3 consecutive years of Championship football with Luton he got to play in the Premier League and we spent that whole time in League One. The only way we got him in the first place was on the understanding that one way or another he'd be a Championship player the season after.
We're getting into the difficult area now of how you get a backup centre back who is good enough to fill in but willing enough to sit on the bench praying that Lloyd's Jones' hamstring explodes. The reality is you either pay a decent amount for a good player who then gets annoyed at not playing and leaves at the first opportunity (like Alex Mitchell did) most likely at a financial loss or you find a player who is good but cheap because something weird has happened either with fitness or life, which is a Charlton specialty at this point. Or you can get an inadequate bit of cover that doesn't cost a lot but doesn't do the job when he plays, like Terell Thomas or Sam Lavelle. Hard to justify spending big money and big wages on a reserve and hard to lure him over but impossible to not have the right level of cover. Lockyer fits the bill if he's healthy enough, just remains to be seen if it's a real possibility and if he's well enough. I hope he is for his sake and ours, he's a decent Championship centre back and he needs to see if he can continue his career.
Burkes a weird one because from the outside it doesn’t look like a ‘bargain bin’ signing. The knowledge that he had severe injury record was there. The whole thing is so od
So is your spelling.
Actually nothing odd about it. Just another member of the Nathan Jones mutual support group for Luton rejects.
Nathan Jones took such a pasting as manager at Stoke and Southampton that he has developed a siege mentality, stubborn and closed to advice from outsiders. "My way or the highway". He wants to surround himself with yes-men and is more comfortable with those who remind him of his glory years at Luton. This is such a common pattern with public figures, politicians, entertainers and military leaders it is easily recognizable.
Sometimes it works. Stalin got the job done. Hitler didn't. It has worked for Nathan Jones so far. Much as I would like to see us at least try to play football, I realize it could be very dangerous to change strategy now. I think we are stuck with it, at least until the end of the season. I do not think we will get relegated, and we do have a very remote chance of making top 6. Keep your fingers crossed!
Missed a single letter, who cares.
There is something very odd about signing a permanently injured player.
How we play is irrelevant to signing someone who’s body is not up to the rigours of championship football all.
I won't say a word about the missed apostrophe earlier, or even the now missing "?".
😁
It’s a football forum not an academic article, shove it up your arse
The country is spending millions to convert our yoof into refined and educated gentlemen, and this is the result.
Don’t worry I’ve got two Masters degrees so I’m plenty educated. Just don’t have time for a couple of smug pricks to dog pile on missing some punctuation rather than discuss transfers.
With you on this! It’s a form of bullying! My step son has learning difficulties & has actually come off social media for this reason! Some people may not be well educated or for whatever reason, it’s just not necessary! Not funny at all if that’s the intention!
I know it's off topic but it is genuinely a bit pathetic and extremely pedantic for anyone to correct someone's grammar unless it is relevant. I.e. you are in an actual English exam.
Makes me cringe how people think it's a sign of intelligence to be able to differentiate between the use of their, there and they're as an example, big fkn woop.
Some of the most interesting/intelligent people I have met can't spell for toffee or write very well, it is not a complete measuring stick at all.
Tell your step son to ignore the noise and carry on as is.
So ignore the difference in knowing your shit and knowing you're shit?
Clearly doesn't matter to you your honour....fecking judge & jury on everything.
For some people it's about standards (learning difficulties aside).....we're all different and all have different things that please or agitate us.
Now, back to the rumours I reckon.
What harm does it do ignoring it? If you know what people mean why does it matter.
It's a bit different if it is academic, or you're a writer, or blogger etc, where writing is key, but why does it matter on a Charlton forum or social media etc. Also wouldn't hurt to PM someone and try and help them privately rather than embarrass them. I just don't think it's the 'gotcha' that some people do.
I agree there has to be standards, but that's in certain environments and being cautious about who you might be dealing with.
Fun fact, I know/knew of the person who made that original video. I played an online mafia based game with him back in around 2006 or so as it was doing the rounds, was pretty surreal/cool to see the video do so well.
Had a lot of time for Lockyer. Obviously a gamble given his heart and lack of playing over the last few years, but will have the hunger and desire to prove he’s worth a contract
Don't count Killer as a Luton player, he only made 7 appearances and scored one goal, nope Killer is CHARLTON ATHLETIC, a God at the club as far as I am concerned...🙌🙌🙌
This may be selfish but I wouldn’t want us to sign Lockyer, watching the Eriksen situation unfold on telly was bad enough, would be very anxious watching him play at the valley.
If the various doctors, physios and the player himself are confident to play then I say go for it, don't want to deny a man his living because I'm nervous.
Lockyer has had two heart attacks on the pitch and missed all of last year with a knee injury, Id hope we could find a better 6th choice in truth
Realistically where are we going to find a CB better than Mitchell at this stage of the window that is on low wages on a free with championship experience and quality, is happy to play back up and not a prem youngster cause assume their parent club would want guaranteed first team football. Lockyer is realistically the best we can do

Mad that the logic seems to be that they were fit last time Jones managed them. They aren't now!!

That & having a heart issue means a NO from me.

he’s also a good defender
i believe he was back training at Bristol Rovers over the summer.
