Regarding the medical situation, it was literally shoulder to shoulder with me, I called the stewards, they took too long to respond imo, awfully slow, and how long it took for the paramedics was also shoddy, complete lack of urgency as they couldn't have been 100% on what they were attending.
Thankfully the fella seemed ok, and the staff eventually helped him out, but had it been something more serious, the response was poor.
The game should have been stopped in all honesty, people were worried in the vicinity, and I imagine all the noise wasn't helping the Charlton fan.
Credit to some blonde lady who was Charlton and a nurse, she helped, also Adam Coe (head of medical at Charlton) came over and completely took over and controlled the situation and really helped out, a complete credit to the club.
Everyone in the vicinity tried to help and get attention of the stewards who were aware, expect nothing less from our fantastic fans 👍🏻
Cambridge need to be more prepared in future for an unfortunate circumstance like that.
Mbick looked a right handful when he came on and looked an intelligent player with it. The good thing is none of our play off rivals would know not much or anything about him.
Delighted with the win and happy that Northampton had a player sent off (so will miss our game on Friday I assume), Taylor is a big player for them so will also be a big miss. Could do with a replay of the away game to get our GD up a bit!! Almost there for play offs, then run hard whilst we still win, if we slip again, rest a few to ensure they are all firing for play offs.
”Today we were quite bold you know putting young Mbick on the bench but we’ve seen something this week in training that’s quite frightening”
This is a young striker who turned 18 in November and very recently come back from spending a few months out injured. Whatever work or thinking he’s done during that time out has benefitted him on his return to the point he’s really impressed NJ. I didn’t expect him to come on late in an important away game which we were only winning by one goal, so it says a lot about the faith NJ has in him.
With Leaburn and Kanu out it’s a great opportunity for Dixon and Mbick to push closer to the first team. Could be a real positive for the playoffs (assuming that’s where we end up) to have a couple of young strikers who the opposition won’t know loads about.
You have to give NJ a certain amount of credit for being a pretty good judge of readiness and ability in younger players. He WILL give them a fair chance but only if and when he thinks they are actually ready - no throwing a young wunderkind in at the Deep end and hoping they pull through, but equally not writing anyone off for being "just a kid."
I don't think Mbick (or Dixon as it happens) are suddenly going to play themselves into first 11 contention between now and end of Season but if we do end up in the play offs it would be very interesting to have unknown quantities to bring on if circumstances required.
Horrible game & Cambridge looked very L2. The main early tactic was to foul / wind up & get TC sent off. Excellent finish for TC, cutting in & well placed, & passed the ball into the net precisely.
Ref didn’t protect him, but at least ref saw sense in not sending TC off, from his push & ridiculous overreaction from Cambridge defender.
The pitch wasn’t great & the ball was in the air a lot of the time. Scrappy game & not great to watch. Excellent away support again.
Better day for Mcintyre in central defence, fair play after being hooked last game. Still not convinced about him positionally. Anderson. playing in his proper position was really good, energetic & energy & putting himself about in the right areas of midfield.
Really liked the look of Mbick as well - strong & quick. Maybe a better option than Aneke, who is immobile, as much as I would to see him score before end of the season.
Small was not at it again. Maybe 🤔 all the transfer talk is impacted his focus. Needs to get his head on his current game. He could be playing in the championship with Charlton.
Didn’t really feel Cambridge were that much of a threat & felt that Charlton would take home the points. Gritty victory & 3 points. Onwards & upwards.
Not a thing of beauty but we deservedly got our noses in front in the first half and saw the game out with not too much trouble, notwithstanding the injury time goalmouth scramble which was a ‘heart in the mouth’ moment.
Tyreece wasted no time in underscoring his importance to the side with a beautifully placed right footer into the bottom corner. He nearly repeated the trick a few minutes later and Godden subsequently hit an excellent first time shot against the post as we looked for the second goal.
It was a scrappy old second half, with only a couple of long range efforts from us which their goalie saved comfortably, whilst Cambridge didn’t manage a single shot on target, the nearest they came being the goalmouth scramble near the end.
A 19th clean sheet is a great achievement for the side and everyone at the back did a solid job, including McIntyre after an initially shaky start. I thought that Berry and Small were off the pace today, whilst both Campbell and Godden showed their class - the latter simply exudes football intelligence and is a pleasure to watch.
Nathan’s substitutes all made a significant impact. Anderson closed the midfield gaps which had been appearing and he also used the ball very well. Watson did extremely well, winning some important one v one duels and getting us up the field. As for Mbick, the lad has certainly grown since I last saw him and, as well as being a total unit, he showed one delightful piece of control down the right touch line which won us a free kick.
With Bolton and Huddersfield losing, a victory at The Valley on Good Friday against Northampton will mathematically secure our play-off place and put us in a great position going into the Wycombe and Wrexham games, where the pressure and tension will be firmly on and with our opponents.
Two other positives - first, it was good to see us wearing red on our travels; and, second, there was excellent support from the travelling faithful. That verbal backing is important so on many levels, including in the latter stages when both teams are suffering fatigue, as they clearly were today in the heat today at the end of a long season.
The result pretty well seals Cambridge’s relegation, although my mate who’s an ardent supporter says they’ve been resigned to it for some time after the initial flurry under Neil Harris. I’ll certainly miss this trip (albeit not the quality of the football) next season, given the 52 minute train journey from London and pubs of the calibre of the Kingston Arms, The Haymakers, Calverley’s Brewery and The Devonshire Arms.
Overall, another professional performance and a job well done. On to Good Friday and the Cobblers (minus one Terry Taylor).
I would expect Blackpool to beat Wrexham as they are playing now and Lincoln away is a tough game for them. You have to assume we beat them which isn't a given of course but I can't see how we are not in it in terms of Wrexham. Wycombe have the run in from hell, including against us. It isn't easy for Stockport either. I would say if we can win every game, we will get second. That is a big if of course but not impossible.
We are going to be in the play offs so it is all about second now and those final games.
Fantastic post tbf, totally the opposite of my view.
The above get complacent, we know what we have to do.
Ultimately I reckon the two W's will fold whoever.
I thought it was a very good win. Of course Cambridge we’re going to give it, long balls and hefty challenges and whatnot, but we refused to be cowed and run out of town. In the context of such a game I thought McIntyre, Dizzy, and Coventry, ably abetted by the others, played like winners. So what if it wasn’t ballet? We can be good at clog dancing too.
Not much to add, dire game, we needed to win and did and that's it really.
Cambridge offered next to nothing and definitely nothing if substance, the Mannion "save" from under the crossbar the closest they got to a threatening shot, McIntyre bit of mixed bag at times, some vital clearances and handled pretty much everything that came his way still some head scratching moments and loves coming way out of position but no real dramas.
Cambridge, proof that "Millwall" is actually an infectious disease as 'arris has turned a middling, meh, typical lower league club into a cntfest.
Mbick is an absolute unit. Right sub to bring on.
Shout-out to Watson, Considering he's been injured and looking surplus to requirements, came on and looked pretty good, helped see the game out really well with some nice touches and all round play.
We needed a win, against a team whose new manager had made them into a team who cause problems for the opposition. They were nasty, niggly and set out to be hard to beat, and we beat them. There were phases where our passing and control was poor, but our subs steadied the ship, and we could have scored again. A final goalmouth scramble threatened to give them an undeserved draw, but we held on and look nailed on for the play offs. As for Csmbridge, they and thrir fans can enjoy relegation.
