Smudge7946: I think gay men can give blood but need to have absented from sexual relations for a period. I think it's 6-12 months although I am not sure this has come into force yet. I know they've relaxed a few rules recently like the period you had to wait after having a tattoo has been reduced from 6 to 4 months. I have now given 44 times in 16 years. Next time in July.

Thought I had booked online at local donor session Tuesday at 4.30pm. Didn't have my booking and told I mighty not get processed by closing time 6.30pm so went home. Should be better than that but probably a sign of cutting NHS resources.

Good news for male donors: providing there is a break of 12 weeks, men can now donate 4 times a year ! Link to follow later. #giveblood
  • I have glandular fever and the after effects (chronic fatigue syndrome for instance) and sadly, my blood would be considered contaminated by a serious virus, as I have never fully recovered (I'm one of the unlucky ones that has the side effects permanently as well as symptoms of the illness). I would gladly have donated had I not contracted the virus, however, I would never want to risk the life of someone deserving of the correct blood.
  • I would love to give blood, but I'm not allowed to. I think that those that do should be commended, and those that don't shoud consider doing so.

I would be willing to give blood as a good pal of mine had a bad motorbike accident recently and needed several pints, how do I go about it?

Smiffyboy: http://www.blood.co.uk/ easiest thing is to phone them 0300 123 23 23, they will find out if you can give blood, then send you a letter for the most local centre. Good man!

Apparently, ex-pats are not allowed to give blood out here in France because they reckon we're all infected with BSE (Mad Cow Disease).

Here's Rachel Riley – captain of Team A+. 35% of the population in England and North Wales are A+, making it one of the most common blood types and also one of the most used.

Here she is giving blood and showing her own support for the Team Give Blood campaign

Do you know who your team captain is?

Bloody typical Rachel Riley is up for grabs and I end up with Jayne Torvill ! Got to agree MOG everyone should give. As a member of the AB- club then my donations are more than a little driven by self interest.

Just a quick note to say thanks to all you guys that take the time to give blood, and MOG for repeatedly beating the drum for www.blood.co.uk. You will probably be pleased to know that the hospitals really do like to make sure that every last drop in the bag is used, and nothing is wasted.

Not wishing to kick a hornets nest, but what is the situation with those who are not hetrosexual?     &nubsp;                                                                                                              I understand that they can give blood now. Is this the case?

I'm only asking as I regard giving blood as a sign of being a 'proper bloke.'

    Proper bloke? Proper twat.

I feel guilty every time I see this thread as used to give blood and haven't and won't be able to again for a while due to recent travels and having has typhoid twice. Have signed up for organ donation, which I strongly agree with (personnal choice etc) and have told close friends etc they can have any bit of me, if any use (one not so careful owner)! Am O neg blood group, so as it's the universal donor, I hope to be back donating sometime soon.
MOG - do they check if yours is over the limit?!

Hey Fiona, don't feel guilty. It's not like you can't be arsed, it's just circumstances mean it's not possible at the mo. I used to give blood, but I'm not allowed to any more because I get anaemic. There's no point feeling guilty about it, it's just the way it is.
