Squirrels got into our loft and ate through some plastic plumbing fittings. We were away on holiday and when we returned part of the house was flooded. £5,000 of damage.Plaaayer said:Why would you kill a squirrel anyway?
I also like chestnuts and hazel nuts but don't stand a chance of getting any before the squirrels. They make good eating according to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, but only the hind quarter. If you can kill rats you can kill their cousin the grey squirrel. They just have fluffy bits that enhance their public PR.
They have killed off most of our native red squirrel population. In Cumbria the grey squirrel has to be killed off if the red squirrels are to survive. Protecting red squirrels is simply about protecting diversification of our wild life.
I was interested in the squirrel traps, good idea I thought. As they don't have natural predators to keep them in check we have what we have, a plague of squirrels.
It's a tough world out there, not the fairy land some would like to imagine.0 -

The only wildlife I kill are the monster slugs that have invaded my veg patch this summer.
They move en mass, like a formation of tanks devouring everything that gets in their way - and the more I kill, the more reinforcements take their place.
Rather than use slug pellets, I slice them in half with a garden trowel - one wet evening I decided to count them as I picked them off, 114 of the b*stards.
One curious thing - my entire population of 'normal' nuisance slugs is conspicuious by its absence.
I can only assume the monster slugs have wiped them out?
Who else has had this problem?

Squirrels are vermin. Get them in your loft and you'll be less sympathetic. The law says you must kill a grey squirrel if you live trap them, although you can only legally kill them via very limited humane means.
Not being funny but there's a world of difference between setting traps for vermin and killing cats, and cats go missing all the time, under cars, etc. Unless you've got clear evidence I'd steer clear of getting involved in a fruitless conflict with your (ex) neighbour. It's probably the last thing your family needs given the tragedy with your daughter, and given emotions are running high it's very possible your judgement isn't quite what it could be. Although you could always ask him, I guess?0 -

Yeah sometimes, but it can be quite lucrative for that very reason. During a recession, people still pay to get rid of rats, hornets, squirrel! I've got a pal in the UK who left plumbing/bathroom fitting to work in pest control. Where theres muck theres brass as they say.Loco said:

Despite popular belief a good pest controller doesn't necessarily kill everything in sight, a lot of my work is proofing against pests so my building and sparky skills come into it too.
I've lost money by refusing to deal with hornets in the middle of someone forest as they were not a threat to anyone and. at the end of the day, they have a right to live somewhere...

I deal with alot of what the french call Loir, in english they're called Glis or Edable Door Mouse and Hertfordshire is the only county in the UK where you'll find them. Having been brought in by the romans, they're the only non-native species protected in both France and England so I deal with them by proofing peoples properties against them. This means people don't put rat poison in their loft spaces for them and so I'm saving them in a round about way. Hope you're reading this @AddickUpNorth ; )Rufus is a dogs name said:

Saying grey squirrels are pushing out the red ones is a bit like saying "those bloody foriegners, coming over here and taking our trees" They are much cuter than the reds and more sociable too.WSS said:Why should we prefer the reds over the greys?

They carry disease, which they appear to be immune to, that has killed thousands of reds. Centre Parks were paying two fellas, fulltime, to cull the greys on their property to promote the reds!maybe_baby said:

I was on holday in France and I swear a red squirrel threw a pine cone at me. A green heavy one no less. They are getting their comeuppance if you ask me.0

its a well know fact in Labour hugging circles that England never had f++k all until it was brought here by others. No food (its all none English) no animals,all the good ones were brought here and no culture--brought here blah blah.
