John Ronald Reuel Tolkien CBE, poet, philologist, and university professor is rumored to have based his classic high fantasy works The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion on a brief 3 month stint in goal for the Burnley FC 3rd XI in the 1911-12 season. During this time he conceded 21 goals in one half of football against a select XI made up of local cheese merchants. An experience which is long held amongst his family and close associates to have influenced his later works.
