I hate the Glad All Over one, But its the Techno version of Seven Nation Army that I think is the worst :')
  • Any problems are technical. Either with equipment, or human equipment and approach.
On Saturday I was paying attention from the East Stand, and I realised there was something going on about the X factor, but goodness knows what. We also had lovely charming kids walking round, but I don't know why.
Sometimes you have to get peoples attention, then tell them what is about to happen, then tell them what is happening, then tell them what happened.
Saying something too quickly, or only once, is likely to lead to many folk missing what's occurring.
I am NOT criticising BDL incidentally.
The other thing that annoys is the amount of stuff happening in front of the lower West Stand area, where anybody is merged into the background if you're watching from another stand.
The opera singers get it, in as much as they go to a usually empty centre circle, and we can see them and pay better attention. A football stadium isn't a traditional auditorium, but it is a Theatre.
  • I'd just like to point out that I started this thread 6 (SIX) years ago when we had that other pillock doing the pitch side announcing.

Christ knows why somebody decided to resurrect it now. Odd.
  • I hated that pillock
  • Just so you're all clear, 'Tannoy' is a brand name....

I think the vast majority of fans are very happy with BDL. He lives every kick of the game, he's a pro at what he does, he makes it look easy most of the time and he's a Charlton fan through and through.
"CHAMPIONS!" - that says it all.

( by the way Dave, the last cheque bounced, are you sure this one will be all right? ;-)

    LOL!

Excellent points, Seth. Occasionally there are pitch-side interviews with former players at half-time - Allan Simonsen last season springs to mind. In the Lower North we couldn't hear the questions, or the answers. And before anyone asks: yes, we all had our hearing-aids turned up. We are a Championship club, not Welling in the Conference. This sort of thing should be rectified quickly.

    ?

    As I said before, odd.
  • Not a great sound system is it? Too quiet where I am - North Upper.

I do think BDL does a good job, but I really wish the Mate of Big Dave would try reading the results out in the style of James Alexander Gordon rather than Peter O'Sullevan. Things got better for a while, but he's slipped back to gabbling again.
  • 100% support for BDL at the top of the page , please Lookie & AFKA !!!!

Not for me. Why the need to tell people to get behind the team? And remind us each week where we are?
All a little Palace for my liking.
  • Is he wearing it in that picture ;-)

  • You know what we got to do
Weve got to get behind the on field pitch announcer
    and lets make some noise
    C'mon BDL
  • In BDL we trust.
  • "Get behind the boys and make some noise" makes me cringe every time!
  • It's loud enough in the east.
I'm all for building up for kick off but often the timing is wrong. I've lost count the number of time the kick off happens just as BDL starts the "you know what you've gotta do...." speech only for the climatic "...come on you reds" call is met by Leon Cort slicing a clearance over the west stand and a "oh ffs" echoing from the crowd.

Me three. BDL is very good though.

  • Two out of the last three announcers have been great Brian Cole and BDL both of whom are Charlton fans and pitched it just right .. although Peter Varney may not agree about a certain Palace game. If the only thing we have to worry about is "Get behind the boys .... " then we must be in a wonderful place , sadly its not.

BTW If we are worried about the volume, does anyone remember when The London broncos were tennants and we used their sound system!!!!
  • yes speakers on the ground all around the pitch? before that a tannoy system, well nearly, from the darkdays that was useless. Love the system now and dont care if its loud! BDl has at least got some heart for his football club as has dave berry! yet on another thread somebody refered to him as a loud mouth!! Lets have ear defenders and a script as a choice shall we!!
  • We want to get that guy from liverpool, best announcer ever.
