Even if you ignore the evoking the war dead for party political reasons this is a really crass poster.

Most of those graves are, in fact, French (the crosses) while the few Commonwealth graves to the right of the picture are quite possibly Canadian as the cemetery is near Vimy Ridge.

Which war cemetery do you think this one is Henry?

    I hope he wins.

But I thought you said "The Eton boys (irrespective of Party) have had a good innings but have lost touch with the Nation. They have prospered, we have watched. We vote them in on their promises and they have done what they like afterwards".........?

    He's the exception.

    La Targette

You can see the French crosses to the left and the Commonwealth War Graves to the right.

No, it's not La Targette.( Good photograph though) There is no wall in the posrer photograph.

My guess is it is either Ovillers or the cemetery in front of the Thiepval memorial. There are both on The Somme.

I'm going to what our resident Battlefield historian SG3toSE7 tells me.

My guess is that the poster pic is older and predates the hedge that now divides the two sites.

Sorry Henry, but it's not La Targette. The French crosses have bedding plants in them in the UKIP poster.

The CWGC headstones are not necessarily British either.

The CWGC graves have a mixture. Just by clicking on the pic you can see a number of Maple Leaves.

Can't find the Poster pic on t'Internet but that is what Clive Harris said.

  • Anyone who votes UKIP should be ashamed of themselves - a racist party with no policies.
At least the BNP and NF were a little more honest. Find it very sad how right wing this country is becoming.
If Farage and his clowns are so anti-Europe I assume they'll give back their MEP salaries.

It definitely isn't La Targette. I agree that the poster photograph is older but you will see that, even allowing for perspective, the gap between the French and British graves is bigger in the more recent picture. Moreover, the two sets of graves look aligned in the older picture but they are not in the more recent photograph.

The question of the bedding plants is more problematic. The original French concrete crosses have been replaced by modern plastic compound ones (this happened in 1989 at La Targette) and it could be that the horticulture was altered then. However the presence of flowers does lead me to suppose that these are French graves in an essentially British cemetery. There are quite a few instances of French graves in British CWGC cemeteries.

Nevertheless I agree with your original point about the crassness of the original poster.

As both you and Addickted have pointed out there is no guarantee that CWGC headstones mark British graves.

Hi chaps, always happy to be wrong on these things, in fact if it was Thiepval then thats even more embarrasing for UKIP as it was a symbolic cemetery of 300 French & British war dead side by side to show the unity of the two nations....

I appreciate that we have hijacked the thread with our cemetery ramblings but I think its AIF Burial ground in Flers (below) as the headstones are in blocks of 8. If so the British graves shown are from an Irish Regiment.

Its where Ernest Sheppard who wrote "A sergeant majors war" is buried very close to Harold Jackson VC of the East Yorks and also where the Earl of Feversham is buried, his body was found by Anthony Eden, a subaltern in the 21/KRRC. He wrote an excellent memoir about his was experiences "another world"

UKIP is only where it is because of the way that some sections of society have been treated by the major political parties. I for one am not a prospective UKIP voter and I won't be voting for them, but I understand entirely why some people are, and I can't stand people getting on their high horse about these people's views.

The way people look down on UKIP voters as morons further marginalises them towards UKIP. These people are not invited in by mainstream parties.

Then there is the side that appeals to people that are not "racists, loonies and fruitcakes" and that is Farage the man himself. Look at the way he holds himself compared to the other major leaders, he doesn't spend 5 minutes stuttering and dancing round a question like the others do, but actually tells you his beliefs.

The ironic thing is that the more and more popular UKIP get because of Farage's "telling it like it is" individuality, the more he will have to airbrush himself, and tone himself down to be just like any other politician.

UKIP will win the European elections on Thursday, and it's Labour, Conservatives and Lib Dem's faults.

Embarrassing that rather than actually acknowledge and discuss the issues that are pushing people in to voting for UKIP, the other political parties, media and supporters just decide to run smears & propaganda. If they focused on the things they are doing wrong then perhaps UKIP wouldn't exist.
Not often i agree with a Spanner, but, well put SLL.
Maybe we should ask those people who have lived next door to Romanians, and see what they say.? Anyone out there?

Nice one, what do they expect in the Stripey Nigel heartland
After reading this article XPatJobs, an employment agency that specialises in overseas job listings, has agreed to cover the £350 fee to the steel band that UKIP did not pay.

Well if the current or previous governments actually got their fingers out and did something about immigration then maybe people wouldn't feel like they have to vote for UKIP.

The fact our council pay themselves so much when our council tax is the 3rd highest in London is a disgrace and a complete piss take.

Well. The Roma that live in Mottingham send the women to Woolwich to beg for the day while the men seem to not do very much except hang around wearing designer gear shouting into the latest mobile phones. I know for a fact that they have been told it is not necessary to steal books from the library and that they must not access porn on the computers.

Of the 4 on site 2 are good as gold and 2 are arseholes. But none of them like the pikeys.
All in all exactly the same as us I s'pose.

People - please use your vote on Thursday.

Many campaigners made sacrifices through the course of British history so that you could have a voice and a choice.

    Use your vote.

It's always interesting how in times of strife people always move to the far right-wing to save them.

Those right-wing parties always run a campaign where they're demonising and blaming a certain minority for the decline in the nation and people lap it up. Happens country after country, year after year.
