Nice to be reminded of VDGG: was impressed by them at Bromley Tech, early 1970s

I saw them last year at the Barbican and it was possibly the best gig I've ever seen :D

Sharing space with his synth collection may be an issue tbh

Have to say that I wondered where it's stored. Not in his flat, I assure you. Unless it's a Tardis.

Not the same without the original line up though... ;-)

  • 4. Magma - intense French band led by astonishing drummer Christian Vander; more like a weird dark cult

this band is incredible btw and well worth a listen for the uninitiated, if you fancy something a little more adventurous/incantatory

Well said, Leuth. I'd recommend the CD 'Live at the Paris Olympia', 1976. Saw them at the Roundhouse about that time; as a drummer myself I was totally blown away. Also saw them about 10 years ago at the Queen Elizabeth Hall; Christian Vander has slowed down a little, but not much. Music to stir the blood.

Because none of them are bands, you plum. Most idiotic ever attempt at being clever.

That's a bit harsh, don't you think? My problem is, they're all cover bands.

  • Hmmmm.......very, very difficult, just five!!

Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band (or anyone else he might play with)
Genesis (only when Peter Gabriel was with them!!!!)
    The Pogues
    Arcade Fire
Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders from Mars

It was absolutely agonising to neglect the following -
    The Clash
    The Sex Pistols
    The Dubliners
    The Clancy Brothers
    The Moody Blues
    Eddie & The Hot Rods
    Pink Floyd
    OMD
    Peter Gabriel (Solo work)
    Cat Stevens
    The Cure
Lou Reed (and anyone else he might condescend to play with)
    Bright Eyes

It was disappointing to omit the following -
    David Grey
    The Killers
    The White Stripes
    The Strawbs
    Family
    The Strokes
Paul Simon (and anyone else he might condescend to play with)

I'm still a groovy hep cat so the following outfits are worth a mention -
Arctic Monkeys (hardly unknown but enjoy tomorrow's concert boys)
    Paul Thomas Saunders
    Sun Kil Moon
    Phosphorescence

Will probably all change tomorrow, when I'm a little more sober!
  • Richmond Fontaine
    Peter Bruntnell Band
    The Pearlfishers
Chuck Prophet & The Mission Express
    Elvis Costello & The Attractions

    Bruce Springsteen
    Sigur Ros

(tough not to include Simple Minds, Talk Talk, Chris Rea, Led Zep, or Steve Winwood/Traffic)

The older you get the harder it is. I've been trying for months to finish mapping out my life in music with You Tube clips, its bloody hard work.

Love your 2nd choice - Golden Earring were/are great - Moontan, what a superb album!

Not that I am saying your other choices aren't worthy, it's just good to find another fan of an underrated band.
I love Radar Love but haven't heard much else. Can anyone suggest a couple of tracks?
    here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cCUNFvkLF9k
Here they are live in 2006. All their top stuff is here. Not in bad shape for a band which played live six months before the Beatles.

Saga - did you discover them by listening to the pirate radio RNI?
  • R.E.M.
    Radiohead
    Heaven 17
    Supertramp
    Mott the Hoople
  • The Who
    The Beatles
    ACDC
    The Police
    Simon & Garfunkel

Thinking about it, The Small Faces just relegate Simon & Garfunkel into 6th place
  • okay to extend this, your five favourite bands ... plus your five favourite albums by other bands ?

No, to tell the truth, I loved Radar Love and a mate had Moontan, which I borrowed and illegally taped (as we all did in those days). The album version of RL is much better than the single version (as I bet you agree) - used to play it in a band and I played the solo note for note (took me a while to learn). Me and my mates really got into them. Saw them at a gig which was recorded and was broadcast on Capital Radio, which I also had on tape (!).

Big fan of RF - and also the books of Willie Vlautin. PB is another quality choice - love Americana and even a few Brits like PB do it well...
