All those claiming that DP isn't good enough for the Premiership clearly didn't watch many Premiership defensive midfielders last season

They also didn't see much of Diego Poyet last season.

Would Diego have signed if Powell was still manager?

Let's hope they have a couple of players up their sleeves to unveil to quickly bury this news

Wonder if this was decided a few days ago and the signings of Buyens / Igor / Morrison were bits of news to get us in a really good mood before the sucker punch
I would imagine the signings were to show a sign of intent to Diego, as well as obviously strengthening the side. Diego would of had to make a decision by the time pre season started tomorrow anyways.

Unfortunately for us, Diego has decided his future lies elsewhere, and I wish him the best.

How much are we going to get? I heard it could be more than the £400k people have mentioned. Pretty sure it will be Chelsea too.

I hope his new club sends him back to us on a season long loan. That would be a good move for all concerned IMHO.

    Why?

He obviously doesn't want to be here, and I don't want to see anyone who has that mindset playing in a Charlton shirt.

Really hope it is Chelsea... How many Midfielders have they already got..

Whats the ratio of English kids coming through that club successfully or having to move on?

Dont get some of the bitter comments on here

yes its Disappointing, but lets face it he is far to good for us and he wants to improve his career maybe play international football, for England or Spain or Uruguay whichever one it is he chooses.
But come on lets not be bitter, He played well when he played, and he let his contract run down.

    Just corrected that for you.

Just one comment for all the money mad on here who will tell us that we would all do the same. His father is a millionaire.

disappointed but maybe there is a player in the pipeline lined up after awaiting his decision.I have been going to Charlton too many years to be gutted and have learnt to move on.I am still really excited about the coming season!

Very dissappointed. Feel it's just as a big a loss for him as it is for us. I don't believe all the 'he's a confident lad so fancies himself at a prem club.' If this was the case he woudn't be rushing into a deal at 19 but having another top season in the championship and getting himself a better move.

He would have been playing under an owner who openly talks on how he likes to play youth so another season as the star man in a championship club was only going to further his career.

I just fear he'll jump at whatever club offers him most money and we will see another wasted English talent.

What a player -- he deserves to play at the highest level IMHO - amazing thta he came in @ the time he did and looked so assured , lets hope he finds the right niche to display his quality. Good luck.

    Unbelievable.

As much as I am hugely disappointed to see him go, it is patently obvious that he is too good for us. It may be that he has made a bad decision in the long term and ends up sitting on the bench somwhere, but for a Charlton fan to actively hope that is horrible.

All the best Diego. I'm just sad I never got to see you play.
I agree he was too good for us. He was so good he could of easily have signed a new contract with us knowing that he was off. Scott Parker did it, Jonjo Shelvy did it, why not Poyet?

I can partially understand, obviously as a footballing person, why he wants to leave and progress his career at a bigger club, you only live once and he is a young man...

But at the same time f*ck him... we move on

You would like to think it was the other way round, or at the very least like Gordon Brown used to get a 'bad news sandwich'

For those of you interested in detail. the changes to compensation criteria are section 65 http://www.football-league.co.uk/regulations/20130704/section-6-players_2293633_2125731#65

Basically if we get any money it's only going to be for compensation on expenses accrued in development of the player. No compensation for loss of the player offthe books or to the playing side of things. Basically we'll get a small amount. He goes abroad and we get nothing.

If what I heard about Gus at Brighton was true then, despite all the money and facilities provided, you won't get loyalty from the Poyets. Like father like son.

And what happens if he signed a new contract and the club demand £15m for him?

Then if he's really Premier League class then someone would pay it. Palace and Zaha spring to mind.

Well he clearly isn't rushing into anything, hence why he was waited until now to make a decision on Charlton and he still hasn't signed for anyone else.

Think some people get this idea that the Premiership is just Chelsea, Arsenal, United etc. Is is likely that Poyet is destined to "rot" at clubs like Hull, Stoke, Burnley? - All Premier League clubs that would be a huge step up from where we are right now.

Sorry KHA, he could easily have demanded a get-out clause at a relatively low fee. It is inconceivable that the club would have refused to allow him to sign a contract with even a £1m get-out clause rather than get into this situation.

For the more forgiving......." again nuts the please us Diego kick in"

To be fair that deal was in exchange for £6m a year of the TV money that the Premier League clubs could have kept for themselves.

We can't have it both ways. We should have shown faith in him before the press told us that Arsenal, Chelsea and Barcelona wanted to sign him.
