Cook gone, caught at gully off a wide ball from the limping Starc.

    17-1 and a lead of 139.
  • Silly shot from Cookie with 8 minutes left before lunch.
  • Ricky Ponting: "I would like to see the Aussies put the out swinger away because it's not carrying anyway and focus on the stumps".

Next ball, away-swinger, Cook goes for it and gets a massive outside edge to backward point.

    :-)
  • If this is how Starc bowls when he's 'injured' imagine how good he'll be when he's fully fit!!

Does anyone know the cricketer whose batting average exactly equalled his bowling average, so that in effect he cancelled himself out?

Not a good start to the 2nd session. Ballance out to a rising ball from Haslewood.

This innings could also be the perfect platform for Bell to rediscover some touch, should (hopefully) we have added a decent number of runs by the time he has to bat

When I said this, I didn't mean this platform....

    Ballance for Nought

  • Wow, the quintessential Ian Bell drive through cover point, beautiful.

Hopefully that is a sign that the tide is tiring with his form.
  • And another! Lovely.

It could even be a sign, that the tide is turning.

    :-( IPhone autocorrect.

Anyway, yet another drive through the covers. So it really is tiring now ... :-)

Play your shots, is the way to go, on this pitch.

No point messing around, with the variable bounce.

Don't want to jinx him but Bell looking good so far. Backing himself to play his shots definitely the best approach in this situation

Key part of the game now in my view.

We have to bat through this and not lose any more wickets. We need 250 plus.

A lead of 300 is certainly possible and might be very hard to chase

I think we will have a lead of at least 350. Currently stands at 232 with 7 wickets in hand and we still have Stokes, Buttler and Ali to come. And no new ball for another 50 overs.

One brings two, and all that. All of our batters are capable of getting out for nought. Not saying that they will, but let's see where we are at stumps...

  • Anyone know what the mercenary (formerly known as KP) is doing these days?

    Natal?
    Cannock CC?
    Notts?
    England?
    Hants?
    Royal Challengers?
    Surrey?
    Deccan Chargers?
    Delhi Daredevils?
    St Lucia Zouks?
    Melbourne Stars?
    Lashings?
    Commentating?
    Book writing?
    Texting?

    Or, for that matter:

    Who cares?

He's not playing for England, while Ian Bell (batting in KP's position!) can't buy a run ...
    50 for Ian Bell ... :-)

Bell gets his 50. His 43rd to go with his 22 hundreds.

    149-3 for a lead of 271

First test of the series and both of our 'out of form' batsmen now have 50's. Nicely timed return to form!!

The snail back to his best. Good to see Bell in the runs. Good position but need to push on and grind these Aussies into the dirt.
  • This is the session where we can take the game away from the Aussies by building a big lead

Scoring is so quick these days that we could (in theory) build a lead of 500+ and still have five sessions to bowl them out

Ball gone for 60 bowled by Johnson.

    170-2 and a lead of 292
