Jordan Cousins is a Charlton hero

On hearing that Cousins played through illness and fainted at half time - I have nothing but admiration for him. Too much is being asked of him and it is detracting from his game, but the fact that he is still giving his all, and more deserves some recognition. Let's show him how much we appreciate him.

  • I have said it many times on here, I think he is one of our best players and has been asked to do so much over the last 2 years. He has come under a lot of abuse from people on here but he keeps going and giving 100%. He needs a long rest so he can get back to his best.

He realises that he has to provide the workrate for 1 1/2 men, which he tries to do but that detracts from his game. It is based on endeavour but has quality too. At the moment, with the team-mates he has, he needs to be part of a three man midfield, then you will see the best of him as he can re-balance accordingly . He will go on to play in the Premiership - mark my words.

When Brighton beat us 1-0 at the Valley last season, in an overall dire performance, I saw in him glimpses of what a great player he could be. I focused on him for a bit. as the rest of the game didn't warrant it, and there is definitely something special there. He needs a manager who has the football knowledge and vision to see what some of us can see and build the side around him IMO.

Must have played almost every game for the past two seasons, a real lynchpin and a great player. Hope he recovers swiftly because we need him firing on all cylinders.

Couldn't agree more, MuttleyCAFC. Jordan has been a constant in this team and always works his socks off. People seem to have forgotten his age and just how much he is giving week in week out. Poyet, someone his age, isn't playing every game like Cousins! I felt truly upset and sick in my stomach when I read that Jordan had fainted at half time through illness! What are we doing to our youngsters? How much mental and physical damage are they going to inflict on their prize possessions as they see them?
Surely even the megalomaniac that is RD and the puppet that is KM can see that this is wrong.
Oh no, they weren't at the game... and don't care! They will never understand the pride, love and attachment that we all feel for players like Jordan, Solly or JJ , CAFC through and through.
  • Playing a man who is ill is just another sign of extremely poor management.

Didnt Jordan insist on playing though?

Its not like Fraeye said to Jordan; I dont care how your feeling, your playing because we dont have enough players.

We easily had both Moussa and Ba on the bench who could have started in his place had Jordan not felt right so we werent without cover

And he could (should) have said ' I'm resting you 'cos i don't want you getting worse as we have crucial games coming up'.

He loves the game and playing for Charlton since he was picked up at the age of 13 when his dad wrote to Gritty for a trial. Doesn't matter where you ask him to play he just gets on with it as long as he's got a shirt.

Now this kind of dedication is commendable but sometimes you have to manage it in the player's best interest and the team longer term. The decision whether to play was probably left to JC and he is not going to say no because of how he ticks whereas an old experienced warhorse like JJ would put his hands up and say 'no I'd better not risk it.

The medical staff should also have some input here but we've seen how injured players appear to have been mismanaged. Something else is drastically wrong to add to the catalogue of disasters at our club and the buck stops yet again at the top with the CEO and RD for not having; a strong enough squad, a Manager / Coach with the balls to say I'm not going to risk 50/50 fit players or a medical staff not frightened of their own shadows.
  • Playing a man who is ill is just another sign of extremely poor management.

In particular it looks like a sign of two things:

    1. The squad is so paper thin Fraeye has no choice but to play a man who is ill

    2. Fraeye is so inept he has no idea of the health and fitness of his players

Not sure if it's one, the other or a combination of both.

Would be interested to know if the PFA have a take on the situation as surely making a player play when he is quite genuinely unwell goes against that player's rights.

For all the rights and wrongs, I think it shows the lad has something about him that deserves a lot of respect.

  • I think Jordan is just unlucky that he's broken through and established himself despite the mental merry go round managerial policy

He's a very good player on his day and would really have benefitted from having Curbs to steer him through his first few seasons. Instead he's had inexperience and dross.

Great thread with a great thought behind it. I'd like to give it 100 likes.

I was fortunate to be over for what I think was his home debut against Forest. There was a calmness and maturity about him which immediately made me think he has a future at the top of the game. I haven't changed my mind.

When Poyet came along a lot of people felt he was eclipsing Jordan. I won't pretend that I didn't find Poyet eye- catchingly good, but it's interesting to see what has happened to both. Poyet looks like he might be wasting his talent. Jordan gave his all last season and I thought we were going to build a better team around him in central midfield. Instead he has to give his all for a complete shambles. That he does do so, is huge testimony to his character.

I'm going to go on Twitter and wish him well
  • He was crap yesterday, however, based on what has emerged, he is excused ! (then again, 90 per cent of the others were crap too)

Cousins is a good lad so he gave it a go but he's not the first player to have played ill.
  • Love Cousins, breaks my heart to hear fans openly criticise him during games. Mind you, I've heard the same at times to Gomez, Jenkinson, Shelvey and basically anyone decent, so he is in good company.

I once heard a fan comment that Yann wasn't good in the air. Always mis timed his jumps apparently.

We mustn't forget his age. He has elements to his game that he has to improve, but I have seen the quality that suggests he can. This period won't do him any harm. But if he was ill and insisted on playing and fainted at half time- well it shows you the lad isn't happy to just pick up his pay from a newly signed contract. There may be one or two others with far more experience who could learn from him. I would also like to mention JJ. A player who shouldn't be asked to be part of a two man midfield. He needs to be part of a three or a supersub. The fact he puts in as much of a shift as he can is also a credit to him. But playing them both together as part of a two is just plain stupid.

His effort and commitment are never in doubt. His ability to pass or control the ball always will be. I think he'll end up playing in defence, which would suit his skill-set more

yes, unfortunately and if you ask him to put in a shift, he does what he can and more but it takes away from the other part of his game. JJ still has something to offer but needs to be used intelligently. If KF feels he has no choice due to the squad, it highlights the problems in player acquisition. If you are working to a tight budget, you need a far more balanced squad with one or two utility players. Cousins is also a utility player as he could do a job in other positions if called upon.

Great guy, all the heart in the world and 10000x more of a captain than than Solly, but at the moment he is a bang average midfielder who can't control a ball very well and misplaced a lot of passes. Has a great engine and will run into the ground for the team, and has a great shot on him that he needs to use more, tackling and tracking back he excels in though.

Don't get the mismanagement comments, Cousins played because he wanted to, and managers won't turn down the opportunity to play a first team regular

Isnt a bad shout... After seeing him at Right-Back against Hull I wonder if its worth playing him in Defence alongside Bauer whilst Diarra sits in Midfield with Jackson rather than the other way round.

We beg to differ, if they care for the wellbeing of their players they do and take a longer term view on things, there again if you are an interim Manager you haven't got much time............well I can hope can't I?

Either cousins is a legend for playing OR the manager is a tool for letting him... We can't have it both ways.
  • We need a few more with the guts that Jordan Cousins showed yesterday.
A few more like him, not the rubbish that Frayae has lumbered us with
and we wouldn't be in this poor position.
My new years wish for Roland and co. to sell up ASAP!!!

Of course you can. Some players would play whilst clearly not fit enough, and that is too their credit and the sort of player you want in your team, but you also shouldn't play them until they are fit enough.

I think JC has probably suffered more than most (supporters aside) with the 'management' changes.

Not sure what the deal was behind him playing yesterday. I would usually think it was down to him wanting to play. However, this isn't a usual club anymore, so it's all bit of a lottery.
  • I've only just read that young Jordan fainted at half time yesterday & my first thought was " Have his legs gone?"

Seriously, JC is a shining light in the darkness that threatens to engulf our Club - our Luke Skywalker.

I'm sure I've bored you previously when quoting his first question when he was a guest at a NWKA meeting a couple of seasons ago...."What time will it finish ?" And when the answer was given, he asked if he could leave by 10pm as he needed to get the sleep he needed in order to be at his best in the next match.

Then, I was told earlier this season that although he was on jury service, he did some training alone at SL each morning before he attended Court.

How many other current players would display their commitment to their club in this manner ?

Jordan - you are a very special young man or rather OUR very special young man.

    And Charlton through & through.

    Bless his cotton socks.
  • Whatever you may or may not think of Jordan's ability, he is a whole hearted player who puts in a shift and always gives his all.

Yesterday he was very subdued in the first half, and in line with what apparently happened at half time, it's not a surprise, because he just didn't look right, to be fair he shouldn't have even been on the pitch if he'd not been well.
