But he said he will change....

...Words uttered to me yesterday I don't know who it was a lovely person that likes to see the best in people. (So please no insults towards an innocent question)
But this person also asked if he does change things (he meaning Roland) will the protestors back off and give him a chance?
I couldn't answer simply because I can't answer for everyone, but did wonder what the different individual responses would be. I for one will find it difficult to trust the regime and would worry that after fans back off things will fall apart again.
So if things do change (assuming it's not by selling the club)... What does it need to be and for how long in order for us to drop our gauntlets?

If he doesn't pull he finger out in the next week or so it doesn't matter what he does. We will be so far behind the other teams for the coming season . We should carry on with protests regardless.4

He needs to sell up. He's lost me. They're completely untrustworthy, and for me they stink the place out with their culture of lies and half-truths.22

We would need to be back in the Championship and the whole set-up credibly designed to be competitive and stable. We all know the difference between genuinely competitive and Meire "competitive". And stability means, among other things, that I need to be able to identify with the players and staff, not wondering who the hell is that in the no. 168 shirt this month, because it was some other guy last month.
Oh yes, I'd also like to see some genuine sympathy and apology towards the devoted fans, some of whom have put far more time and money into the club than I have. So I won't back down until I also know that the real Charlton people are satisfied.
I seriously think he'll die before that happens.11 -
He will never change because he didn't buy the club to try to improve it. His focus isn't on achieving success on the pitch or even creating a team that is exciting to watch.
Even if we had a season of success (e.g. a promotion) I wouldn't trust him to build on it, I'd expect to see him cash in on some of the better players.
It's not about the details of whether we have a manager or head coach, how many players are English, where or how we sign players from, how good the football is to watch. There are different ways clubs can progress and be successful. The issue with this ownership is isn't so much about the football, it's an experiment to prove a club can break even doing the minimum to try to be competitive on be pitch.41 -
Roland out.13

I think the message from CARD and the Trust has been clear, there's no room for negotiation left, the only solution is that he sells up and leaves.
I completely support that position and I think most Addicks do too.12 -
Talk is cheap. If he demonstrated he took the club seriously as an entity in its own right, rather than just the latest outpost of his empire, I'd consider it. But I really can't see that happening.2
-
He can say that.
But he won't.0 -
Sorry Sadie, but not going to happen.0

If he refuses to sell and he manages to appoint a team to run the club properly then in the end most will come 'round. There will be a small group that never accept him and the majority will not trust him, irrespective as to his actions moving forward, for a long, long time. For me I think I'd need to see significant improvement (including promotion this season) for at least three seasons.
However, I am not sure they want to be successful and I am convinced that they will never understand what it takes to be.1 -

I know Paul, it wasn't me that thought it was, it was a question someone else asked me. Because I was talking about how much I hated them.Miserableoldgit said:Sorry Sadie, but not going to happen.

A leopard never changes his spots. The only way to get rid of the problem is to shoot the leopard. The best Roland can do now is sell the club and walk away.0

Has he actually said he will change?0

God knows! Apparently...Henry Irving said:Has he actually said he will change?

This is a straight fight now between them and us.
They really don't want to lose. Petty isn't it0 -
Exactly thisMiserableoldgit said:Sorry Sadie, but not going to happen.

Sorry, wasn't a pop at you, without giving the "I went to Belgium....." speech, talking to the locals, I got the impression that he seriously does believe he is never in the wrong.sadiejane1981 said:

The only change I'd accept involves his body temperature cooling by 98.6 degrees F.14

I think Katrien and Tony Cahones are telling themselves, and Roland, that a Brit as manager and a fee wins and all will be forgotten and forgiven.
I think that it will be enough for some but not most.
And that is assuming that it would even happen.2 -
They are naive though if they think any British manager will want their terms.Henry Irving said:I think Katrien and Tony Cahones are themselves, and Roland, that a Brit as manager and a fee wins and all will be forgotten and forgiven.

- you will be called the "head coach"
- you will be told who to pick
- you may get people turning up at training you don't recognise.
- we sign players when we want to, you don't.
- we sell whoever we want.
- you will take all responsibility when we lose games
- you will be sacked if the team we pick for you lose too much to appease the fans, don't worry we already have your replacement lined up.2 -

Even if he does change, the trust has gone, he needs to sell. I'm not interested in anything else right now.0

I would want it in writing and signed. None of that verbal agreement stuff...5

I'm more trusting. If he told me he was changing that would be good enough for me. I am sure I speak for most proper Charlton fans.TeslaGirl said:I would want it in writing and signed. None of that verbal agreement stuff...
Edit: I'd better put a smiley face thing here

how about if he got rid of KM and installed a football experience CEO?3

They might like to think that it's just a case of them getting a few things wrong and if they make a few tweaks here and there everything would be alright, but that isn't the case at all. Everything they do is fundamentally wrong. As has been said above, their aim isn't to run a competitive football club, their aim is to prove that Roly is the new messiah. It's a vanity project for a man who quite literally has more money than sense. Look at the statements they've made in the past: Roland does't do failure; you have to accept that he does things his way; Katrien doesn't care about the history of the club, whilst Roly doesn't care about winning; fans are weird. Look at the lies and deceit. Look at the complete incompetence of these utter failures. It's not just that they have got a few things wrong. It is that they are the wrong people for our club. Completely incompetent and, more importantly, untrustworthy to the core. Nothing that they could do now would ever win me over. The battle goes on.19

It is not just a willingness to change even if such will does exist.
Does he have the capacity to change? Does he know how to make the change necessary? Does he have the energy to change? It is about having the appetite to invest in the effort to make the change needed. The official manager thread is a case in point. Will he simply put the effort into turning up at the club on a regular basis. Will he attend matches in person to represent the club, to meet people in the industry, to learn from his competitors, to actually show a measure of leadership.
Will he make the time to talk to and listen to supporters? Will he communicate with those who have the interest of the club at heart?
We all have our strengths and weaknesses and he may have absolutely no communication skills but he can at least listen. People will make allowances and respect he has invested his time to do so.
He will argue he does not have the time and employs others to do these things for him. If they are palpably unable to deliver any of those skills then an absentee owner is as bad as absentee manager or as a bad as any absentee landlord.
However be around the place and all of those failings will be evident each and every day. At which point you either guide, mentor or get rid. If you have neither the time or the interest sooner or later the things fall apart - so what exactly was the point in getting involved in the first place?
The ridiculous thing is all of these principles should be the easy part of the business because you love the game, love the club, want to talk and listen to people who share your passion to get different views, to argue a few points, to explain one or two of the harsh realities of the business.
It will not guarantee success nor will it appear on any balance sheet but you will at least know there is a very good chance you will have the majority pulling in the same direction. It is your job to convince people to be pulling in the same direction. It is called leadership.
Today there is none.
Ultimately words are cheap. They are even cheaper when they are issued through inadequate intermediaries from a remote ivory tower.
If there is any serious attempt to change, the ball is very clearly in his court. So if genuine Roland roll up your sleeves, reach for the duct tape if you must, tear down the barriers you have created, make the personal non financial and financial investment to set a viable agenda, start delivering to that viable agenda, and get your arse over here to talk and maybe just maybe you will find people will be prepared to listen.
I for one have absolutely no interest in more empty words.17 -
I have made a vow to myself not set spend another penny on the club or to set foot in the valley until he's sold up. Even if maracles were performed and we won the premier league, I'll stand by it................5
-
It's far too late for them to win me back. However, I honestly believe that if we were to be top six in November then a lot of supporters would decide that everything was alright after all.2
