    The trouble with having 2 or 3 debutants, is invariably they never do well initially, and that adds pressure on the other batsmen.Though I'm s sure someone will tell me differently.

    For some reason, Foakes doesn't seem to be on the radar, and his batting average is not particularly spectacular. I think the problem they have with Balance is that there is a dearth of talent at the moment (how many times do we say that ?) - in essence, you could imagine the conversation they might be having behind the scenes, which is, how do we drop someone who has an average of over 100 for someone with an average in the 20's or 30's ? - cant see it happening.

    Gary Ballance is seeing a hand surgeon in Leeds tonight. Looks set to miss at least next Test.
    This will save the selectors (and Root) making that decision

    Which will mean they will unlikely to drop Jennings. Bring Stoneman in for Balance, and another bat/spinner for Dawson - maybe Samit Patel because he gives you both.

    You seem to be obsessed with averages. Bob Willis as a bowler and David Gower as a batsman didn't have great averages at County level. But they were class at Test level. The gulf between County bowlers and bowlers like Rabada, Philander and Morkel is huge.

    Yes, with 2 batsmen needed to replace Dawson and Ballance, and a seamer to replace Wood, the selectors may not want to make a 4th change. Stoneman to open, with Jennings at 3?

    Those who watch a lot of county cricket (Rob key, Butch, Rainford-Brent, Daggers etc) have been calling for him. The sky commentators rarely if ever watch county cricket and frankly don't have a clue about it.

    Fletcher knew the county game, he would clearly watch games for himself to try and spot for himself potential England players

    When we are on the front foot we look good but as soon as we have to defend, play through a session, we are poor. We have very few players who can bat conservatively they are all shot players who want runs. This is where we fall apart when we want them to have common sense and bat appropriately to the conditions.

    Could have said you were talking about Womens cricket! just checked for the scores and then was like oh.... cant say i have ever had the urge to watch it. Funny when i am very keen on womans snooker to get better eg. more exposure and rooting for them when they are in qualifiers for the main game. (sorry didnt mean to go of topic)

    Most of the girls look ok at batting but the bowling leaves a lot to be desired.

    Sarah Taylor could probably play pro cricket as a keeper, she'd probably bat at 10 or 11 though?

    Agree. I think this while batting positively idea and putting pressure on the bowlers has been blown way out of proportion.

    There is a difference between battibg positively and being aggressive. It is still a test match. Bat like it. You can be positive and put pressure on the bowlers by knowing where the gap is and pushing the single. Do that 3 times an over and hit the bad ball and you are going along comfortably without unnecessary risk. This 'I'm a positive player it's how I bat' excuse is a load of bollocks, use your brain you don't have to smack every ball for 6.

    I watched the last 5 overs of the SA innings - big heave ho's to leg for 1#s & 2's but none of their batters got under the ball & hit for 4 or 6 as you would see in the mens game.

    What does he know about Test cricket too? Him and Farbrace have undoubtedly improved our white ball game but neither have coached a top team in Test cricket. We have a different captain for different types of international cricket so why not different coaches? Who else is in the team? Mark Ramprakash! Says it all.
    The man who should be England's Test Manager/Coach is at every Test. Sadly he is sitting in the commentary box. The man who along with Duncan Fletcher laid the foundations for the huge change in England's Test fortunes.....Nasser Hussain.
