  • Gammon has been used for years by cyclists to refer to Addison Lee cabbies and White van men - frustrated, fat and pink, sat in their tin boxes in traffic just looking for an excuse to take out their frustration at their lot in life on someone. It's not a new thing.

In fact, as a cyclist, I resent this cultural misappropriation of a cycling term. Leuth, you should be ashamed
Is this when I say "Oh, the irony"?

That’s not my point though is it, would she be equally outraged and triggered if she came across murals referencing apartheid that don’t include white people?
    I doubt it
She’s attention seeking and virtual signalling
  • Boiled bacon with peas pudding and gammon steak with a pineapple ring on top are in my top 10 meals, so happy to be referred to as that culinary delight meself.

I agree with you E but was making the point that the white activists in the AA movement are remembered

The woman's an idiot and as you say attention seeking which she's certainly achieved.

I was aware there probably would have been, faux outrage on my part to highlight her stupidity
  • Do you find that being a feminist helps you get more fanny?
I find that being a feminist helps me think critically and helps me strive to become a better person.

Unfortunately, for many others that outrage isn't faux and is used to entrench their prejudices. Emily Dawes is one but plenty others on the left and right do the same.

Going off on a slight tangent but Radio Four just had a feature on words like Gammon (sic) and Snowflake (sic).

Well when she comes across some we may see. A Tory MEP made some highly disrespectful and offensive remarks in the European parliament teh other day which nobody seems as bothered about as some silly student.

    Was it Anti-Semitic?
  • No, it was highly disrespectful to people who lost their lives in the war who fought against the Nazis. Those that have given the ultimate sacrifice for freedom should be respected by everybody.
  • Totally agree, Tory, Labour

    Agree.

Out of interest, what did she say?

He was saying that socialists were similar to national socialists - Nazis, in front of the socialist group. Where offence was rightfully taken, was that many socialists lost their lives standing up to the nazis. My Italian Uncle was a socialist who risked his life, and lost friends fighting them during the war. You don't have to agree with their politics, but to label them the same thing they sacrificed all for is insulting and disgusting.

As is labelling people who voted to leave the EU as racist and Nazis insulting and disgusting
  • Yes - but it isn't about sides, it is about standards.
  • Yes - but it isn't about sides, it is about standards.

So why point out he's a Tory then? As you say it should be unanimous. Likening people to Nazis because you don't agree with their politics is wrong, unless they are obviously Nazi of course, but it seems to be an everyday occurrence to stifle and close down reasoned debate these days. Today it's a "Tory" vrs "Socialists", but it is usual6tbe polar opposite to be fair

Because he is a Tory MEP. Same as this woman is described as being part of the Student Union! Are you the god given defender of the Tories or something? I criticised the subject of this thread and have criticised anybody calling people racists from any side.

No, I'm not, but I look forward to your outrage next time people on the other side of the fence are wrongly labelled a Nazi or racist

You will get it - people being unfairly labelled is disgusting. I said that student should be sacked if you checked my posts. Still waiting for your outrage!
