fair play to the Aussies .. however England's bowling and fielding were the poorest they've been for a long time and Morgan's captaincy seems to have gone a bit stale .. now they can all get out the bubble and resume life in the new normality

Morgan's captaincy stale??! Fickleness and short memories beyond fucking belief. He made one iffy decision (and if Rashid hadn't bowled a half-volley first ball it might have been the right one)
I think it went beyond one iffy decision yesterday. Maxwell took a shining to Rashid early and it allowed him to get in to easy. I agree though in general, one off day means nothing

I think Morgan’s captaincy in general  epitomises one of the fundamental principles in sports psychology. To win you have to be able to bear to lose. He does not take decisions based on not losing, he takes them to win the game. In my view English cricket has in the past often been guilty of doing the opposite.

Joffra Archers team scored 27 off the first 2 legitimate balls in the IPLGame yesterday can’t remember who was bowling but
6nb 6 6nb 6 wide not sure of the order was what happened then I thin 4 off the next 4 balls

sunday I caught the end of a game when Chris Jordan’s team needed 1 off the last 3 balls it went dot wicket wicket  (Jordan the last ball wicket)
then Jordan’s team batted again and it went 2 WICKET WICKET
    so somehow they lost hmmmmmmmm

Didn't want to start a new thread. Sad news, Dean Jones the Aussie batsman has passed away, he was just 59. RIP.

World class big match player. Could have easily have done it at the highest level for a few more years imo. Our loss is Essex’s gain.

Archer is bowling a spell and a half in the IPL - 2.1-0-2-2 so far - and at speeds up to 95mph. He was rarely doing that in the Test matches for England!

The one that I’m shocked being dropped from the test list is mark wood - our best bowler abroad and should be absolutely key in Australia next year. Need to keep him fit, I’d be furious if he gets injured playing in the championship for Durham and misses the ashes.

I think he's more suited to white ball cricket, as he can bowl very short bursts and has the variations needed to be successful in T20s and ODIs.

I think he definitely still has the tools to become a successful test match bowler. Certainly a better limited overs player though.

    Just seen this from wisden

No opener in the history of ODI cricket has a higher batting average AND a higher SR than Jonny Bairstow (min. 10 inns) He also has the highest IPL average of anyone in the tournament's history (min. 10 inns) Does he have a claim to be the best white-ball batsman on the planet?

    (1) On the one hand Wisden talk about an opener so, for statistical purposes, this rules out any other batsmen that might have a better batting average AND SR.

    (2) Then they quote the fact that Bairstow has the highest average of anyone in the history of the IPL but fail to point out that his average is based on a miniscule sample of just 16 innings as opposed to the likes of Warner (132), Dhoni (176), ABV (148) and Kohli (175)

    (3) Bairstow's T20 international average is 26.34 with a SR of 137.52. This is very good but not as good as a lot of the top players e.g. Warner has an average of 31.45 and a SR of 139.72

So, in answer to the question "Does he have a claim to be the best white-ball batsman on the planet?" I would say that he has a claim but it isn't one that would be successful!!!

England's white ball tour of South Africa will go ahead in November, behind closed doors

Next season, 2021, there will be a near copy of the 'Bob Willis' set up for the county championship, except the three divisions will not be decided geographically but through an alchemic process of past form (so I understand). Still, not before time, the ECCB has got with the programme and brought some real interest and extra competition to what had become a moribund set up.
Let's hope that there will be a slim chance of actually getting to attend a few matches.

The so called claim to be "the best white-ball batsman on the planet" does not seem to be recognised by the Sunrisers in the IPL who have dropped him! A bit unfortunate in so far as he hasn't been in poor form but they've opted for Warner, Williamson, Holder and Rashid Khan as their four overseas for today's game.

The Sunrisers haven't missed Bairstow though - they are currently 100-0 off 8.4 overs!

Edit - Bairstow's replacement, Saha, scored 87 off 45 balls and Warner, his former opening partner, made 66 in 34. So I can't see Bairstow getting back into the side anytime soon.

unlucky to be dropped, bairstow's their second highest run scorer this year.
