A permanent signing, rather than relying on loanees for a start, and with non league players there's always the thought of discovering a gem, whereas Smyth is a known quantity in terms of his league form
To be honest I'm slightly puzzled that LB & SG were so excited by Smyth that they wanted to sign him when we were in the Championship, when QPR didn't think he was good enough at that level
I suppose LB & SG did think he was good enough. A bit like when we picked up Danny Mills from Norwich reserves. Or Kermorgant from Leicester. Can't always go by what other clubs think.0 -

I don't see the point in signing someone for the sake of it. I'd rather we left the budget in for January and make a good signing then. I guess a CB on a short term deal until Jan could work.1

We really do need another RB or CB in so I hope that's what we're looking at. We have to remember that we're Charlton; Pearce hasn't started the season, we crippled Gilbey within a couple of games, and the way Bowyer is describing Deji's injury I don't see him coming back any time soon. That leaves us with one RB, and two CBs. Add to that the fact that both Gunter and Inniss were signed late and haven't had a full pre-season, that makes them very susceptible to picking up injuries, as we saw with Maddison. As good as our back line looks at the moment we'll be singing a very different tune if one of them gets hurt for any amount of time at all. If we can get one more in there we'll have two in every position and we'll be looking decent.

Far be it from me to disagree with Bow, but I would still make the recruitment of a pacey goalscorer my top priority. Of course, if there simply are none available that are good enough and affordable, then ok.0

Personally I don’t think we need anyone but if we did I say RB or RCB, as Oshilaja is currently cover for both positions.
May as well call a truce and get Solly back, we could do a lot worse.5
