Watching the Quest highlights, the Peterborough pitch was atrocious on Saturday, joint worst with the Newport one which is always terrible as they play rugby on it as well

If the ground is saturated then any frost will penetrate deeper below the surface and it will take longer for the pitch to thaw, and then there will be even more water in the pitchCovered End said:

This is my understanding too. A layer of snow helps to prevent freezing0

Ground source pumps derive their energy from the ground anyway and with boilers being phased out from 2025 might be worth a look. Any spare energy could be used to provide hot water to the toilets too ...
