Today marked the 4,000th day since we won a Test match in Australia. Makes you wonder how an idiot such as moi could think we might draw the series 2-2!!!3

And rightly so. I said I had high hopes that this would be his breakthrough series as the conditions here suit his game but it seems mentally he doesn't have his head right in terms of being able to start an innings at this level.Leuth said:

As an addendum, Geraint Jones' Test career ended with an ignominious pair in Australia, and I'll bet we were one piece of competency from Carey away from Buttler doing the same. This innings has bought him one more game and no more as far as I'm concerned1

Its an absolute crime that the Lions have already gone home. They should be following the main squad and playing inter squad games so the likes of Crawley bairstow etc. get game time.kentaddick said:

England coach Chris Silverwood says he would pick the same two teams again despite the tourists going 2-0 down in the Ashes against Australia.
The choice of bowling attack in each match has been questioned by many pundits and commentators.
"There is always going to be divided opinion," Silverwood told BBC Sport.
"You pick a team and not everybody's going to agree with you."
When asked by BBC cricket correspondent Jonathan Agnew if he would pick the same starting sides for the two Tests again, Silverwood said: "To be honest, I would."
"I was happy with the skillset we had in the pink-ball Test, so I would pick the same team again," added Silverwood.

Its smoke and mirrors, he can't seem like he is questioning himself or throwing the players under a bus not publicly anyway but it was clear to anyone who knows a tiny bit about test cricket that Broad and Anderson should have played at the GABA, and a spinner that isn't also the best batsman, one of the best fielders and the captain should have been picked for the last test.
No way should Buttler be keeping, test wicket keepers don't put down the chances he has and besides that Foakes is by miles the better keeper.

Even the cash obsessed dunces at ECB have to understand that is a resignation quote from Spoons, don't they? To paraphrase "yeah we got humiliated, were never close to competing but I know best and I'd do it the same again, cos, y'know, I'm right"
He and Captain Cretin make a right pair. Root thinks he's throwing his bowlers under the bus "shoulda pitched it up, etc" Joe you utter tool you're the captain, you tell em what the plan is, you set the field, if they bowl half track filth, You hook em and put someone else on, cos You're in charge on the field. No such criticism for negligent no balling, witless batters or village fielding, sounds more and more like he's forgotten even the tiny amount he's ever learned about cricket.

Root has lost the confidence of his players .. old hands like Anderson and Broad will do as they please and Root's only comeback is to whinge at the pundits after the game .. Stokes should be appointed NOW .. we all know what a hard and uncompromising man he is both as a cricketer and in 'real life' .. players will respond to him because he is a terrific cricketer and because he might chin them if they did not do as told .. previous star all rounders Flintoff and Botham have been very poor captains, Stokes is cut from harder and tougher material than those two.
Back to the Silverwood/Giles issue. It shows the fucked up situation within English professional cricket that these two lame yes men and time servers have got to the management pinnacle. And Joe Root ?, lovely guy, terrific batsman, BUT his inadequacy as a captain and leader has been obvious for a long time.
Central contracts and the loss of money IF a player is relegated from the chosen few means that the necessary changes to the test squad are not made when they are required. It is hard to see an old comrade lose out on a huge salary even if he is past it or is no longer capable of maintaining the high standards needed for what is a demanding cricket format.
The Australians are lucky, a super climate, a heavily sporting culture and the drive and ambition of the cricket authorities as well as the very competitive nature of Australian society all combine to produce outstanding sports people in many disciplines. The dearth of opportunity, except perhaps in football and the poor facilities in England for cricket, make the development of young players very difficult. All in all, a major overhaul of English cricket is required0 -

Given out total lack of success currently, it is difficult to comprehend one bowler taking all 10 wickets in an innings (and 14 in the match) as Ajaz Patel did recently. It's even more difficult to understand how the achiever of that feat can be left out of the very next series. But that is what has happened to Patel as NZ have named Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell in their 13 man squad to play Bangladesh.
To think, 10 wickets in total in our five Test series would probably be sufficient to stay in our squad!1 -

Wood in for Woakes
Leach in for one of Broad/Anderson

I agree mostly with that. The one reservation I have is, the replaced players had no warmups. Burns at least looked as though he was improving in each innings. Now you’ll get another opener who has had no match practice. Cue Crawley getting out for a duck.Leach is going to get dismantled again. The other two I am all for.0

Agree though it is ironic that the bowler who has scored more runs for England than Hameed, Pope, Buttler, Stokes and Burns is dropped because he's a bowler. Robinson/Leach/Wood and Anderson is no Moeen/Woakes/Broad and Anderson. What it does mean is that at least four of our top seven have to get a decent score and by that I don't mean defiant or even pretty 30.
Will they move Malan to open? He has done a very good job at 3 but, let's face it, when you've been one down on 0, 4, 7 and 23 it is virtually the same as opening. The other benefit of doing that is that it retains a left/right combination.

Seb's in the same hotel in Melbourne as Ian Botham. His security stops any selfies because of the risk of Covid and that's quite sensible although Botham apparently was gutted that he was prevented from getting one.11

Hazlewood will miss the 3rd test, Cummins is back and Harris keeps his place despite being the biggest failure (so far) amongst the 'specialist batsmen' from either side .. Starc is also due to play
The England T20 side selected for the tour of the West Indies in January looks a stronger outfit than that selected for the Ashes lol ..
