Well, I said OVER 30, so

(I assumed he signed at the start of 2001/2 which would have made him 29, but maybe he signed during the season)

He signed in the December. 

And he was over 30, he didn't sign on his birthday...

Anyway, Costa was signed for freakish reasons as above, and we were in the Premiership, and he was an experienced international who was yet to achieve his greatest days as a professional. Harry Arter he...wasn't

Rod Fanni was 34 when he signed on loan. No idea if he was good, I found those years too painful to watch, but I've read positive comments

Not by your original rules no We've got three now. 

How many have been that bad? Have we even had that many? I can only think of Fanni, Hulse and Tudgay (on top of Arter). I don't think Fanni and Hulse were that bad, Tudgay was a disaster.

What constitutes a good / naff January transfer window from what’s coming up?

This could be an important window for next season. A small fee for a player now and an 18 month contract might be more cost effective than trawling the free agent market in the summer. 

Personally I think we need to recruit now for next season rather than a late promotion bid.
