panic buy, means they have failed to sign anyone better .. good move for Wood though, nice bonus for his pension potAddick Addict said:So Newcastle have agreed to pay the £25m release clause in Chris Wood's contract. That's a lot of money for a 30 year old but, whilst he has only scored three times this season, he usually ends up with a dozen or so. More to the point, Cornet, who has already had his fair share of injuries, is Burnley's only hope left of scoring a meaningful number of goals. Their board isn't known for splashing the cash so this might be the final nail in their coffin.
ALSO Kieran Agard who got Plymouth's winner v us has moved to Doncaster .. Plymouth didn't renew his short term contract0 -
A decent signing for Donnie, he'll do well in L2 next season...Lincsaddick said:

He will still be mentioned on the summer rumours thread. Google "Charlton Life Agard" every transfer window thread forever comes up.killerandflash said:

Lyle if you are somehow reading this polishing that fine ego of yours, I’m sorry and take it all back. We are seriously shite and need you.Addick_8 said:Would be pleased to see Chuks back.Lyle? Nope. I’d rather finish 15th and have nothing to play for then see Lyle in a Charlton shirt again.Hopefully see you soon mate.7 -

It's worth saying again .. for a talented young player on average to good L1 wages, a move to the London area is often not viable. He might be living in a £200,000 house in a northern/midlands town or city with his family. Little traffic, good schools, easy travel to and from the training ground. Then, he signs for Charlton, sells the nice house and for the price he gets, he can buy a leasehold one bedroom flat above a chip shop in Penge with no parking space for his nice motor and no space for the wife and saucepan lids (if he has either)
THIS i m o is the biggest recruitment problem we have, the cost of living in London, as I say, for a footballer earning good money, but a salary that gives him an inferior standard of living to what he might enjoy well outside the M250 -
Pretty pathetic.Addick_8 said:

Confirmed Wood to Newcastle and Digne to Villa, both £25m

Wood to Newcastle screams desperation0

Depends how you look at it really. If you were newcastle relegation would be a disaster as they have money to burn and no decent player would go there if they are in the Championship. Look at the bottom of the table, Norwich are basically down, the other 2 relegation spots look certain to be out of Newcastle, Burnley and Watford. Burnley havent exactly been scoring alot of goals and now even less likely without Woods, makes it a straight race between Watford and Newcastle, if I owned Watford I would be locking up my key players during this window as Newcastle just might give them a call lolsam3110 said:Wood to Newcastle screams desperation0 -

I think he only just turned 30 last week, lots of time left in him considering he's not a player who relies on his pace. He'll help get more out of Saint-Maximin and the players around him.ValleyGary said:He's alright, but he's 31 and scored 3 goals this season. Not sure that hes worth 20m or that he will change Newcastles scoring record enough to keep them up.
I'd have thought investing in someone like Bereton-Diaz would make more sense. Potential to do well in the Prem, if they go down then he will likely stay and get them back up and he's only 22.
But what do I know.

To be honest I thought it was a pretty uninspiring signing until I read an article which highlighted his stats.
His record is 50 goals in 154 Premier League appearances which isn't bad when you consider he plays for Burnley who create very little. He's hit double figures in the last 4 years which puts him in company with Kane, Vardy, Sterling etc and his off the ball stats are apparently some of the best in the league as well so I actually think he could turn out to be a decent signing for them (Annoyingly as I'd love them to go down).
I imagine there's plenty of more inspiring signings out there but he probably ticks all their boxes, he has a track record of putting the ball in the net in the Premier League, experience of relegation battles, someone who puts the hard miles in, probably someone you could see staying if they are relegated and has the added bonus of weakening a relegation rival.

Damaging a direct rival always adds to the worth of a transfer deal.
The other end of the table, but Chelsea signing Parker from us, and Newcastle signing Robert Lee had a similar effect.1 -

Doesn't need to if Wood allows them to play further up the pitch and puts him closer to goal, which is likely the plan. Sain-Maximin would also have to learn how to finish though so it's not foolproofcafcfan1990 said:

He was apparently on around 50 at Burnley and will be on 80 at Newcastle.0 -
Kane Hemmings [Burton - Tranmere] Undisclosed
A pretty consistent scorer in the lower leagues for a long time, the type who might well have suited us in the shorter term .. 30 years old, dropped down a division .. good signing for Tranmere1 -
would have been pretty annoyed if we signed him5

Looking further into it, it’s a 10m salary deal so much lower than what someone suggested. Tbf it was on Twitter.0 -
why ? .. we urgently need a striker and it doesn't look as if there is one coming in soon (if ever) .. as I wrote SHORT TERM at leastRedhenry said:would have been pretty annoyed if we signed him0 -

Burnley have done well there hpldomg out for the release clause - he's not been as good this season as others, for a start.killerandflash said:Confirmed Wood to Newcastle and Digne to Villa, both £25m
4 good years out of him, £10m profit at 30.
Need to replace him though.1 -
And not good financial business if as a result they get relegatedNorth Lower Neil said:

No point thinking about signings until the last week of January and deadline day. Thomas isn’t going to splash too much this window with no hope of play offs.0

Not really true though there’s been 77 incoming transfers made already in League One. We account of 0% of them.Isawsummersplay said:As it is for most teams.3 -
Because he’s crap. We need players better than the options we have or at least the same level as Washington and Stockley.Lincsaddick said:

Pretty consistent scoring record though. I’d have taken him until the end of the season I reckon and see how he got on. Admittedly he’s certainly no better than mid table league 1 but that’s what we are at the minute.Sage said:
