A year ago Flynn Downes left Ipswich for Swansea for £1.5m. He's now moved to West Ham for £12m...

Hourihane, who most people think is an excellent player is on a 2 year deal, whereas the other 2 are only on 1 year deals, so not a massive long term risk
We've seen what players are like towards the end of their 1-year deals...
The frequency of games is also a killer and injuries seem to take longer to recover from.
I think one to three in a team is doable if you have young players doing the real leg work.
Cambridge got promoted from L2 with Wes Hoolahan in his late 30s using his class to run the midfield and getting everyone else to do the running
There is no magic cut off either.  Rooney was finished at 32, Milner is probably the fittest, or one of the fittest, players in the prem.  Solly was finished at 28.

Injuries, genetics, how you look after yourself etc all play apart.  Ronaldo could play in league 1 well into his 40s, the other Ronlado probably couldn't play in the park at 40.
Phillip Gilbert celebrated his 40th birthday Monday whilst riding in the Tour De France.
Exactly, one of the lady semi finalists at Wimbledon is in her mid 30s.

    This guy is nearly 60!

Jason Donovan is really looking after himself

    Looks more like Bobby Davro.
  • James Collins the next to be linked with Derby. Did a good job for Luton a few years back but he had excellent service with Jack Stacey and James Justin as their fullbacks.

Matt Smith 2 likely to leave Arsenal permanently. The liked of Millwall and Luton allegedly linked with him, though I'm not sure a season at Doncaster who got relegated makes him a Championship player...

    Sterling to Chelsea nearly complete.

City have okayed a blinder on that one in my opinion - get him in at 20, get his best years then sell him for slightly more at 27, when pace is his main asset and he may start to decline, and he only had a year left on his contract.

Sterling, Jesus and Mane all going to their respective clubs for 45 million. I believe they all had 1 season left on their contracts.
Liverpool didn't want Mane to leave but they got their money back on the 30 year old.

Sterling has had a good career at City and despite only being 27 that's good business for Pep's team with a central striker Haaland ready to put the false number 9 in moth balls as City again try to win the Champions League.

Gabriel Jesus at 25 should enjoy being at Arsenal where he will get more game time and enjoy being a striker and shouldn't have to play as wide as at City at times.

Clement Lenglet has signed for Spurs on a season long deal

Could be another decent move in the market for them

Lenglet has finally admitted he made a mistake in turning down Charlton though, would already be a Premier League player with us had he just signed for us in the first place when we wanted him.

Barca are paying the majority of his wages AND we have an option to buy for only £6-7m apparently.  Thats a brilliant deal.

Forster, Lenglet, Perisic, Bissouma and Richarlison.  Thats some bloody window and it sounds like we arent done yet, with another CB, a RWB and an AM all being pushed for.

That’s ok, he has a much worse younger brother so we’ll snap him up instead! 👍

Brentford have signed Aaron Hickey from Bologna.

Be interested to see how he does back here - Has been billed as a very promising talent North of the border, so could be quite a signing.

Arsenal had been smiffing around him all summer.  Surprised he's gone Brentford.

Verdane Oliver has left Gillingham to move back up north to Brighton Bradford. Slightly surprised he didn't get a move to another L1 club

Bradford must be in the money and are making a right good promotion bid judging by their recent signings

Especially since relegation from the PL, Huddersfield have signed a lot of players from lower leagues and even the NL with Sorba Thomas
  • I'd love for someone who has any understanding of La Liga to explain how Barcelona can afford a 70m fee for Raphinha when:

    1. They supposedly have the largest debt in football.
    2. Quite a few of their squad had to take wage cuts post-covid and are owed tens of millions in deferred payments.
    3. They have outstanding transfer fee payments due to more than 15 clubs.
    4. They had to let Messi go as they couldn't afford to register him, even if he played for €1 a week.

It's a complete farce. I get they've raised money and signed a sponsorship deal with Spotify but how can you be a billion in debt and not able to register a player to suddenly spending all this money?

Since Messi left just a year ago they've spent 50m on Torres, signed Aubameyang, Depay, Kessie, Christensen, have offered Dembele over 200k a week to stay and are trying to sign Alonso, Azpilicueta and Lewandowski.

And Tebas has the cheek to moan about Man City and FFP. Barcelona are literally making a mockery of it.

La Liga seem to take the absolute piss as a whole.

Just look at how they reacted when Mbappe decided against joining Real Madrid
