Good choice for him, to be honest I don't think the new guys are any better, and if anything the fact they are flip-flopping between the 2 seems to be pissing a lot of the drivers off1

True and how much of his decisions were down to trying to please the F1 owners in terms of excitement. What we had was the most exciting championship ever and it was ruined by trying to take that further artificially. Ricciardo hasnt helped himself with some of the performances that he's put in.
But equally feel that Mclaren arent showing the whole picture, and have to take some of the blame - There were radio messages from Austria where he felt he was faster than Norris, and wanted to be given the opportunity to fight Ocon (?), but he just kept being told to hold station.1 -

McLaren feels very Team Lando? Which I can understand to a degree , he's their golden boy that they're brought through all the way from karting and obviously hope to make him a WDC one day. I just don't think the new generation of cars are especially suiting Danny's driving style and he's not quite adapted yet.1 -

They probably have an inkling that they wont win Lando the World Championship either, so are trying to keep him sweet so that he doesnt jump ship - Especially as both Red Bull and Mercedes have ageing drivers, with little prospect through their own Academies for a while.
Of course Norris is still a damned good driver, there have been a number of occasions where he could have won a race by now - But because of the "protection" it looks like Mclaren are giving him, I couldn't see him going to either RB / Merc and challenging Verstappen or Russell from the off.1 -
To be honest, I think Ricciardo now recognises where he is in the pecking order of drivers.
A few years ago he was frustrated at not being Top dog at Red Bull and took the gamble by jumping ship to Renault, then McLaren. It didn’t quite work out as he’d hoped, and since then, he’s not really had a sniff at winning anything, so his star has faded a bit. However, he’s simultaneously cemented his place as a very capable driver.
I reckon he knows he can command a certain amount of respect as a driver, but his chances of being number one at one of the big teams has diminished. So he can either suck up being number two at the front of the field, or be the main man further down the field. He knows he’ll never be world champion now unless something weird happens that throws him an opportunity out of left field (like Button at Brawn, for example) so he may as well pursue a long and financially rewarding career and not be too precious about not being the main man.6 - Sponsored links:

The problem is he doesn't have the same pedigree as, let's say, Vettel and Alonso who are top dogs at smaller teams, and hell, he's probably only just on par with Bottas at Alfa. So if you rule out him being at those 3, at McLaren, at RBR, Mercedes and Ferrari, and at Alpha Tauri for obvious reasons, what's he left with? Williams or Haas... If I was him, I'd be looking at 2024 as the year I jump to a different category tbh4

Agree with this but fair play to him though. You give that Ferrari to any other team on the grid, even a backmarker like Haas or Aston Martin, and I'm sure their team would do a better job getting it's drivers to wins and podiums. It's like they spend all their money on the team chefs and then have to get Luca the local paperboy to do strategy for them.5
