  • This thread is  sometimes uplifting (Bauer mendonca finals) but increasingly concerning. This is the first time I think I have been up to date with it.

I was late to sniffing out MS and ESI. Always thinking they deserved a chance etc.

However twice bitten. TS has now lost my support, my give him a chance view. I really don't like the smell of this.

I don't know what we do about it, if anything. But this isn't  a fan base that sits silently by as our, our, club is damaged.

Perhaps more obvious shit has to happen. But I'm afraid the signs are it will.

What if anything do we do. There are people far better able, experienced and committed than me that can give a view, steer, hand.

I do think it is worth the conversation, early, based on our fkin awful experiences
  • Re the energy prices - maybe Thomas will look to change Saturday kick off times to 12/12.30 so as to avoid the need for floodlights? I know it’s being considered at non-league.

Believe Martin is doing paper rounds now too for a bit of extra money
  • The only thing that gives me hope now is that Garner has mentioned they need 2 more windows to be truly competitive for promotion. This coupled with the fact they have stated the importance of balancing the books and the due diligence they’re obviously putting into this now makes me hope they really do have a plan in place. That’s my hope but only time will tell.

TS didn’t do himself any favours when he spouted off about Champions League football in 5 years, blah blah blah. I’m hoping he’s learned from that and is reigning it in big time. But, only time will tell now.
  • Maybe it will take them longer to balance the books but my hope is at least they have a plan. Obviously, balancing the books is strongly intertwined with the performances on the field.

Who was in the Sunderland end if not Sunderland fans. I can't remember thinking there was empty seats ?

You could say that Thomas Sandgaard is reigning it a lot as we now into the 5 year plan to get back  to the Championship but by getting players only when they are out of Contract.

Would not blame him or indeed any football club that did this. Seems eminently sensible in the current circumstances.
  • This is based on doubling - or sometimes trebling - the revenue in L1, which is fantasy, and is allied to TS’s claim he can sell the ground out in this division (while ratcheting up prices). It is not a plan, it’s a pipedream.
It's a pipedream on seriously heavy drugs. So far from reality it's a joke.

  • 100% this. We take huge numbers when we go to Wembley and we’re just little old Smallwall. First time at the old Wembley in 1999 we took nearly 50,000. Everyone who has ever been to a game attends, and usually brings various family members and mates just for a day out.
Yes but how many of those were released on temporary license?

You are right with your point though, I know at least 15 people who went to Wembley that are unlucky to go to another game until we are next there.

I also think that even if we got back to the Premier League filling the ground regularly would not be a given. I don’t think watching top flight football live has the same appeal as it did around the time Charlton were last there.
  • And sure those folks would also love a day out in the Premier League too. They start coming back regularly enough and when do they no longer classify as day trippers? That grows the fanbase, hence potential.

If we’re talking diehard CAFC fans only, I reckon you’re probably looking at 20-25,000 worldwide. Of course the rest is going to be made up by day trippers and mates coming along for a day out.
The day trippers all disappeared within five years of relegation.

I used to support the players and the club.

Now, I support just the club itself. The players come and go. The revolving door of sparrows Lane peaked when the Belgian had a lust to insert his unwanted waffle.

"Back in my day" (early 00s) the players had relatable personalities. Playing football was not just a job for them. They were living their dream and it was clear they had an appreciation for it.

There was at least some form of genuine loyalty and care!

As is football of today wholesale.   Outside of the PL the remaining 72 are 12 month contracts and loans.

A big shame that it appears there is not much Scandinavian left in him.
They think about things, then act.

I see what you mean, but Duchatelet holds the assets. He achieved his aim. RD would happily see the club go under. Charlton will not prosper with  Duchatelet in the background.
In a nutshell.  Absolutely nailed it.

There were a few. They didn’t sell quite as many seats as we did

If only there was a way of encouraging him to sell.
  • I'm seeing a lot of snide comments and criticisms of Gallen. Tbf I thought he was doing really well by us in the RD days. It's only sine Sandgaard has come in and changed the way recruitment is done that he has been less successful. Others with more inside knowledge may have differet views but this is my view from the outside looking in.
I am not sure it is snide to say that Gallens only successful (in monetary terms) signing has been Bonne.  Can you name others?

Of course he has had to deal with a whole range of poor owners and skint budgets but I just don't think his record is stand out enough to jump much up the ladder.

Sunderland fans, and lots of them. No empty seats, so I wouldn't disagree on that, but it didn't feel to me like it was 50/50 at the time if you're telling me the allocation was equal. Just my impression, so I may be mistaken.

If Wembley was actually in Newcastle not London what do we think the split of fans would have been ? We have the rather large advantage of getting to Wembley on  an Oyster card.

The free kick that never was at home v Fulham that lead to their last minute equaliser. We would have stayed up were it not for that.
That was given about a yard in front of our front row seat.....was the biggest refereeing cock up Ive ever seen.....was like a French Farce.... would have been funny had it not had such a negative impact on the club.
  • I think Gallen is probably doing just as good a job, it’s more optics and perceptions playing their part here and a simple fact, the budget is all of a sudden looking leaner.

Some outgoing players like Davison and Burstow attracted pretty decent money apparently (I know more on the former than latter) while his selling skills are continuing to do their job, we beat off stiff competition including clubs in the Champ for McGrandles, for example.

The man comes across highly professionally, is articulate and appears to work his b*ll*cks off. I fear he is a flight risk and will be a real loss for us if the break even noises land at his door. Hopefully his value is recognised and respected. You get what you pay for after all…

SG is excellent at what he does people seem to have forgot the signings we made and had to compete against other sides one or two in the championship to get these players signed .. it’s not about one day the transfer window we had our target, deal agreed weeks before but the player got the championship move he wanted even then we hoped to get him on loan but late on deadline day we had to move targets hence Bonne .. even then SG done everything he could do deal was agreed , medical passed then QPR pull the rug because they could not get the player they want .. and that sum up the final day of the window you have your targets .. one deal starts a knock on affect you can’t blame SG TS or the club for that
