Charlton Athletic vs Brighton & Hove Albion
Wednesday 21st December 2022 - 7:45pm Kick-Off
Referee: Thomas Bramall
Introduction
Once again it feels as though matters on pitch are acting as a bit of a sideshow with matters off it - Charlton welcome Premier League opposition to the Valley this Wednesday evening, it'll be the second time this calendar year, after welcoming Norwich City at the start of 2022 for a third round clash in the FA Cup - The Addicks weren't victorious that day, yet put in a display that wasn't disgraceful - Brighton on the other hand will be tough opposition tomorrow night, for one they're not currently focused on Premier League... Once again we hope that its an Addicks side on display that doesnt disgrace itself... Especially with more pressing issues potentially happening in the background.
The Opposition
Name: Brighton & Hove Albion | Manager: Roberto De Zerbi
Division: Premier League (7th)
Last League Cup Result: Arsenal 1-3 Brighton & Hove Albion
Brighton in the last decade have perhaps stolen the blueprints from Charlton on how to be a model club - Taking inspiration from the Addicks, they fought long and hard for their own stadium to be proud of, and have become an established Premier League side now looking towards European adventures, rather than Championship concerns.
Managers have needed replacing (Graham Potter the latest to be lured away by Chelsea), yet unlike Richard Murray, our opponents this Wednesday evening took a more sensible, and calculated approach towards the problem, bringing in the largely unknown Roberto De Zerbi from Ukraine side: Shakhtar Donetsk... Brighton of course got to this stage of the competition with a ruthless win over Premier League leaders: Arsenal with a 3-1 win at the Emirates, this will be a true underdog task for the Addicks
There could yet be a measure of the unexpected... The History of Football is littered with underdogs so there is always a small chance for the Addicks to progress - Brighton of course haven't played a competitive game since mid-November so may be rusty (they did play out a 2-2 draw with Aston Villa in Dubai, yet that was 12-days ago), the Seagulls will certainly be without World Cup victor: Alexis MacAllister... However the likes of: Caicedo | Estupiñán along with ex-Charlton Academy starlet Jeremy Sarmiento could see involvement at the Valley, after Ecuador's Group Stage exit in Qatar.
Charlton Team News
If rumour is to believed then it is new Manager: Dean Holden currently taking training at Sparrows Lane, however it sounds as though Anthony Hayes will take charge of his last game before either stepping back into a coaching role, or leaving the club altogether (Seriously who knows squat at the moment) - Charlton have of course taken the cups seriously this campaign, so I cant see there being many changes from Saturdays loss to Bristol Rovers - Miles Leaburn was a surprise, and welcome, inclusion in that game, and came through 26-minutes without issue, although you'd expect Charlton a bit more defensive, and pray for a handful of openings against superior opposition.

We can’t score and we can’t defend.Time to concentrate on the League.None of our next 3 games are winnable on current form, and we could be in big trouble come mid Jan.0

Depends whether or not Brighton play their kids - if they do then 0-4. If they play a smattering of first-teamers then ...... what's the record defeat in the EFL Cup?
Good write-up as always FA.2 -
Park the bus and play for penalties.
And for schitz and giggles get Payne to mark Dunk when we are defending Brighton corners.1 -
We are going to get absolutely rinsed.
Away from home vibe in our own stadium.
What's on TV? There must be something better to do0 -
The only good this that can possibly come out of this game is if there is a big crowd I hope they make TS feel like the prick he is5

What are odds on how many assists Inniss gets for them, including a possible sending off if Brighton need it0

Do we think the club have made arrangements with private medical insurance companies for medical cover including ambulance support.
As there will be little to nhs cover tomorrow.
If not then maybe the club will leave itself open to compensation claims if player is injured or a member of the crowd injured or taken ill.
According to the BBC some of tonight's games had been moved so as to avoid this issue.0 -

It was the game where everyone got what they wanted.0 -
Strong squads being put out by Premier League sides in League Cup action this evening0

Is there live commentary for this game?0

Given the s***storm the club is, and has been, experiencing I'm acually expecting us to win tomorrow night, borne out of the old siege mentality that we always seem to conjure up when the odds seem stacked against us and particularly in front of a big crowd and under the lights. It could well be a famous night.

I am expecting us to be royally annihilated. Like being exposed to 50 shitting seagulls overhead. Going to blow kisses to Peter’s lot and wave a misshaped hand goodbye to Brent all the same. 1-63

Lowest team left in the competition now...0

This is one game where 'Garner ball' could have been worthwhile.
Not saying we'd have won, but it's against a premier League side that won't be looking to kick us up in the air.0 -
Our record defeat is 11-1.
At least that isn't in danger. Mind you, I don't think we'll score.0
