Charlton squad out of contract for next season - who to keep?

Here is the list of our squad members who are out of contract at the end of the season:

Thierry Small,
Tyreeq Bakinson (his Wednesday contract expires this summer),
Connor Wickham,
Michael Hector,
Panutche Camara (his Ipswich contract expires this summer),
Terell Thomas,
Lewis Ward,
Lucas Ness,
George Dobson,
Jack Payne,
Diallang Jaiyesimi,
Richard Chin.

Who would you keep on for next season's promotion/play-off push?

Bearing in mind we already have 21 players contracted already for next season with Fraser, Mitchell, Henry and McGrandles coming back.

(You can include LuaLua but I felt it's too early to make a judgement really on him in particular and possibly Wickham).

    Keep:

    Dobson (but he’s leaving)
Thomas - he’s cheap backup and can play across the back 3
    Small

Maybe keep Bakinson, but only as a squad player so it would probably involve us getting McGrandles and Fraser out which might be tricky

Probably get rid of the rest, unless Wickham or Lua Lua stay fit and play well between now and the end of the season then maybe they can earn a deal

Thierry Small has an option so would activate that now at a minimum
Hector if he's happy to be a backup

not seen enough of Wickham to judge, Camara a big risk given his injury record last few seasons, rest can go

I had forgotten all about DJ, how will we cope?
Can you imagine how shit he’d be without those performance enhancing sock slits he swears by…
  • Dobson I would have if we could, sad we can't.
    Small we need to extend.
Ness I'd be tempted still, still young and was decent last season but wouldn't be too gutted if we didn't extend - what's the age limit on compensation if we make an offer, 21 or 23?

Lua Lua and Wickham no idea, too early to tell.

That's about it.  Thomas is OK but I hope we can improve on him.
  • Lewis Ward... Lets be honest he's not been signed to ever be in First Team contention, and is probably doing everything required of him, by being there in U21 games to guide the youngsters.

Thierry Small - Reckon he could be one of the best Left-Backs in this League next season.

Those are the only two I'd keep 100% - Dobson as well, if there was a chance of us keeping him.

If we see extensions for Payne and Jaiyesimi then the world has either gone mad, or Nathan Jones is a genuine magician who'll turn them into Foden and Mbappe!!

Bakinson and Thomas I'd maybe keep as squad options if we cant get better (then we could be in trouble), Ness I'd offer a deal to, to ensure we don't at least lose him without any form of compensation - Wickham prior to yesterday I'd have considered a one year deal, but if he's injured already then no thank you... We've got Leaburn and Aneke who can play the job of injured target man perfectly.
  • Keep:

    Thierry Small
    Terell Thomas as backup
Lewis Ward (3rd choice so will hardly play anyway)
George Dobson (if possible with the pre-contract agreement in place)

Thierry Small - KEEP and try to extend
    Tyreeq Bakinson - LET GO
    Connor Wickham - LEG GO
    Michael Hector - LET GO
Panutche Camara (his Ipswich contract expires this summer) - I would like to offer him a year contract. Still think with a full pre season there is a player there
Terell Thomas - KEEP (perfect cover across the back)
    Lewis Ward - LET GO
    Lucas Ness - LET GO
George Dobson - KEEP if we can do
    Jack Payne - LET GO
    Diallang Jaiyesimi - LET GO
    Richard Chin - LET GO

Question is can we really sign a 5th choice centre back on a backup wage that is better than Thomas? I don’t think so, definitely not one that is equally as good across all 3 positions. We don’t have an unlimited budget so you have to consider that. We can’t have 5 centre backs all on good money, otherwise we won’t be able to strengthen where we need to elsewhere

We should aim to bring in a new first choice (Hector will free up some room), then we have REG, new player and Gillesphey starting, with Jones and Thomas backup

What we can’t afford is to keep gambling on players that have a dodgy medical history in the hope that might by some miracle stay fit for a season. This year we’ve had Camara, Aneke, McGrandles, Taylor, Leaburn (who seems to be going that way) and now Wickham and we’re constantly left short.

    Keep Small.

Keep Dobbo if you can persuade him but I am certain he is gone.

Keep Bakinson and Thomas if they are very cheap for squad cover but not bothered on either.

Keep Ness if cheap and loan him out, but not bothered if he leaves.

Washington and LuaLua too early to call.

No to Hector, Camara, Ward, Payne + DJ.

    Don't know enough about Chin.

If possible keep Small, Thomas and Dobson.

With some regret others ought to be released, some wistful regret regarding Hector and Chin for example.

Fair enough, his versatility and two-footedness did enter my head after posting. But I'd personally rather have competition for places than squad players and don't think that's unreasonable in this league, though some do.

    Thierry Small,
sign him up as fast as possible.

Tyreeq Bakinson (his Wednesday contract expires this summer),
    nope

    Connor Wickham,
can see a use for him if Leaburn and Chucks are back.

    Michael Hector,
    nope

Panutche Camara (his Ipswich contract expires this summer),
no - too injury prone and form has dropped.

    Terell Thomas,
YES. He is statistically our best defender this season.

    Lewis Ward,
    who ?

    Lucas Ness,
can see him making the cut.

    George Dobson,
    YES. Don’t let him leave.

    Jack Payne,
    You must be kidding.

    Diallang Jaiyesimi,
What a rick it was to sign him. The chap we turned down for him will be playing in the Bunda next season (seriously).

    Richard Chin.
    No chance.

Thierry Small, - Keep long term deal if possible
Tyreeq Bakinson (his Wednesday contract expires this summer), - Go
Connor Wickham, - need to see more
    Michael Hector, - Go
Panutche Camara (his Ipswich contract expires this summer), - Go
Terell Thomas, - 50/50 really, solid depth
    Lewis Ward, - Go
Lucas Ness, - dropped off massively needs a fresh start , Go
George Dobson, - Keep if we can.
    Jack Payne, - Go
    Diallang Jaiyesimi,- Go
    Richard Chin. - Go

Also absolutely bizarre to see someone wanting rid of Zach Mitchell. Just because the Cowleys don't like him means absolutely nothing, he's got a very bright future and I'd have him around next season definitely.

Yeah but that somebody is just saying that to get a reaction - like he does in 99% of his posts. He actually thinks Zach Mitchell is the latest landlord of The Queen Vic.

Thierry Small - KEEP (Easy decision, based upon what we have seen so far.)
Tyreeq Bakinson - GO (He's helped at times, but has been pretty average. At best, a cheap backup option, sadly.)
Connor Wickham - GO (Would like to see more, but fitness remains a massive concern. We'll need another physical forward, but probably needs to play more minutes than he could.)
Michael Hector - GO (Expensive for a backup. We can find better, hungrier players cheaper.)
Panutche Camara - GO (We can't keep carrying injury-prone players. Just can't stay fit.)
Terell Thomas - KEEP (Done enough to stay, but concerns remain. Versatile enough to warrant staying, and at least stays fit.)
Lewis Ward - GO (All GK options need revising - 1st choice needs better, 2nd and 3rd can wait).
Lucas Ness - KEEP (Would prefer to keep and give a L2 loan spell. I still hope he could be of value, but would understand letting him go permanently.)
George Dobson - KEEP (He makes a difference, but we need options to play instead of him when we need more creativity. Would be disappointed if we can't keep him.)
Jack Payne - GO (Never really been good enough. A L2 player.)
Diallang Jaiyesimi - GO (Not good enough. A L2 player now too.)
Richard Chin - GO (Don't think he can make the grade.)

    Thierry Small - keep
Tyreeq Bakinson - undecided. If Dobson leaves, and we can permanently move on Fraser and McGrandles, maybe they will be space for him.
Connor Wickham, - probable go unless he can really make an impact in the rest of the season
    Michael Hector - undecided
Panutche Camara - probable go unless he can really make an impact in the rest of the season. I imagine his wages will be relatively high also
    Terell Thomas - undecided
    Lewis Ward - go
    Lucas Ness - probable go
George Dobson - up to the player
    Jack Payne - go
    Diallang Jaiyesimi - go
    Richard Chin- go

A lot depends on whether we play 3CBs or 2 next season, as with the former we'll need 5 or 6 options. My gut feeling is that one out of Hector and Thomas will be kept on.

He's just turned 19 and he's playing in a terrible side. How can you write him off already?

It's like Spurs saying let's release Harry Kane because he didn't do much on loan at Leicester in the championship.
