  • Suggestions if you are still playing songs to them - tested and approved by grandchildren:
    Virginia Plain (Roxy Music)
We gotta get out of this place (Animals)
    Paint it black (Rolling Stones)
    The Actor (Moody Blues)
You're not alone any more (Travelling Wilburys)
    All or nothing (Small Faces)
Thanks for the suggestions. I have already played two Rolling Stones tracks - Gimme Shelter and Jumpin Jack Flash (neither did well). We got get out of this place is definitely on my shortlist.

Great thread, it's important to show the kids proper music. Too many of my young cousins were listening to that grime nonsense so I had to show them the light and introduce them to metal, rock and roll and classic dance pop music. None of this wannabe American gangster toot.

Listened to my, 20, 17 and 15 year old cousins playlists and was very happy to hear what they listened to on a day to day basis.

Also convinced all 3 of them to support Charlton.

    Great read @captainbob

I scrolled down the list on my mobile, so missed the Stones tracks. A few more:

Walls of Heartache - Johnny Johnson and the Bandwagon
Walk away, Renee - Four Tops
    Love Child - The Supremes
Cum on, feel the noize! - Slade
Flight of the Rat - Deep Purple
    Teenage Lament - Alice Cooper
Bits and Pieces - Dave Clark Five

It's a pity to me that you chose a Beatles track that I consider to be one of their worst! Two B-sides that are better than most A-sides - Things we said today & The night before.

It would be interesting to hear the views of younger lifers on my suggestions as well!

That was a bit cruel. They showed you their playlist and you gave them Charlton in return.
  • I played "Teenage Lament " to my sixteen year old granddaughter yesterday. Half way through, she smiled (a miracle in itself) and exclaimed that she liked it!

Five years have passed since I posted my previous tutor group's chart of music; here is the new list (in reverse order) from my soon-to-depart tutor group. A few observations first:
    - This group scored more harshly
    - A few pupils struggled to understand that being asked to give a score out of 10 allowed you to choose numbers other than 0 and 10.
    - Despite the low scores, the class voted at the start of each year to carry on with 'Music Friday' rather than ditch it.

We've heard that one before...  :D

I would be genuinely intererested to know what they think, there's always a chance they may have heard a lot of the songs on your list before, but I am pretty sure they wont have heard anything like the ones I suggested.

Would you still flounce if I chose 'That's All Right, Mama' by Elvis?

Is 'Surfin' Bird' by The Trashmen, a rockabilly song?

No - but it's a cracker - however, they may know that from "Family Guy" ?

"That's Alright Mama" is good - here's the ones I suggested last time Bob.

Train Kept a Rollin' - Johnny Burnette & the Rock n Roll Trio
    Domino - Roy Orbison
Blue Moon of Kentucky - Elvis Presley

Maybe try a bit of British Rock n Roll on them too?

Growl - Johnny Kidd & the Pirates
Turn my back on you - Billy Fury
Brand New Cadillac - Vince Taylor & the Playboys

No surprise that the 3 'rap' songs are all in the top 30. Probably age the best in a demographic that has rap/hip hop as the most popular genre.

Seems like they rate familiarity as well, which must be why YMCA, Never Gonna Give You Up and Pink Panther are rated so highly.

    Wot?
    No Pink Fairies?
Try ‘Do it’ or ‘City Kids’.
  • There is plenty of good music from every era - always a bit sad when people restrict their listening or say things like 'all modern music is rubbish'.

Much easier to access music nowadays...

I wish I had music teacher like you when I was at school! Do you play each song just once and ask them to give a mark immediately? I think if so then that's why the pop songs have got relatively higher scores. Some rock music tends to be difficult to get into on first listen. When I was at university I got interested in a lot of 80's music released before I was born. I remember it took me a few weeks to like Depeche Mode's music (I didn't 'get' it at all at first. Thought it was flat.) They slowly became one of my favourite bands.
I'm not a music teacher; I teach English and Film Studies. I do feel, though, that a teacher's job is to introduce pupils to more than just their specialist subjects, hence Music Friday, walks in the countryside, sharing my travel adventures and trips to Charlton! I agree with your point but if they don't score immediately, they'd have forgotten by the next day!
Trips to Charlton? I bet most of them would prefer the cane.
Has to be one of the funniest responses.

Maybe try 4'33 by John Cage on the new group.
(They will probably demand the 12 inch version)

There is plenty of good music about, but almost none of it is on mainstream radio or TV, As you say it is accessable too, but online it tends to be very polarised.
