It wasn't clear it was never going to be clean enough. They got it clean enough, but were scuppered by the same issue we have with our rivers - a period of very heavy rain overloads the sewer system and then the river isn't clean for a few days until that pollution load has gone downstream. Just as we've had huge benefits from the efforts, started by the Thatcher government, to get rid of the "dirty man of Europe" tag by cleaning up our rivers from the terrible state they were in during the 70s and 80s.0 -
Presume that is because he got the better score in qualifying. Strange that they apply different rules in that sport to the swimming in the event of a dead heat like Peatyse9addick said:

Two swimmers tied for eigth place so had to have a swim off fortunately is was only a 100 meter event.0 -

The rowing/canoeing lake is one of a complex just outside Paris presumably suitable for a swim. There ought to have been a contingency plan where a new cycle course linked up to the final stage, the run, over its designated laps.
A duathalon is as much a travesty as including a subjective non-sport like break dancing in the Olympic program.2 -

When I eventually manage to become head of the IOC [admittedly my efforts so far to gain this position couldn't exactly be described as 'Olympian'] I would eliminate any activity that is marked subjectively.
Trim the whole global climate changing circus to events decided by who is fastest, furthest, highest, heaviest closest etc.
By all means have a separate gathering for events decided by who can roll around on a mat,or jump into a swimming pool 0.2 marks better than the next competitor.
And flying teams from every corner of the planet to ponce about on a skateboard simply defies logic. Where's that Greta when you need her?1 -

Picture the scene, after two rounds, scores 3-2 to each in 1st two rounds so level. Last round decider. Polish boxer reprimanded half a dozen times for holding. (For the uninitiated you tend to hold if you are being pummelled) This then leads to a point deduction for Pole. In boxing most rounds are scored 10-9 unless there is a knockdown (10-8). There wasn't. A point deduction meant her max score was nine.
How did the judges score her more than 9 or the Brit less than nine?
It wasn't 9-9 because the decision gave no time to have a countback, and the Pole knew she'd won even before her hand was raised.
Not the only Brit to lose a controversial points score and that is just us, in 2024.
Alas poor countries are included in judging panels regardless of qualification. Corruption is rife. Doesn't matter if judge is excluded from the sport, they already have a life changing bribe in an offshore bank account
Judged events need to be sidelined until ethically ironclad.

Just catching up on the earlier events today - no surprise that a man called Hales won shooting gold for GB. The Killer was very handy with a shotgun2 -

Frustrating tie break, with 3 double faults from the Brits. I think they talk too much at times, which seemed to affect their rhythm, when they're the better players.1
