Triathlon postponed due to poor water quality in the Seine.

"Organisers said about 1.4bn euro (£1.2bn) had been spent on a regeneration project to make the Seine safe to swim in after a 100-year-old ban. But as recently as June this year the level of E. coli was 10 times the acceptable level imposed by sports federations."

A pretty crazy sum of money (if true) for the water to still be shit.

Not a bright idea to hold it in the Seine in the first place IMO. It's a bit like us holding it in the Thames.  There must have been plenty of lakes in the French countryside where this could have been held.  Four years training for this? Farcical.
Also they say it's been postponed until tomorrow. If it's not good enough today after spending a billion and god knows how long on it, what exactly are they going to do in just 24 hours?
Even if it's down to "acceptable" levels of pollution, I'm not sure I'd want to swim in it. The women go first, so the men can at least wait and see if they start puking up and soiling themselves before agreeing to start their race  :D

There's also the sea! Was in Nice last month and the International Ironman competition was on for one splendid day. No problems swimming in the Med, then cycling up into the mountains and back for a run along the Promenade Des Anglais. The organisers' fixation on as many sports as possible happening in Paris is coming back to bite them.

World Triathlon confirming it would be a Duathlon if the water quality doesn't improve.

The prospect of that is an absolute disgrace. Can't hang a Gold medal for triathlon around the neck of anyone who hasn't competed in one. The athletes have trained for years to compete in a triathlon and it will disadvantage the strong swimmers, making a mockery of the outcome. Can't imagine what the athletes must think. I know one who said he'd swim though whatever rather than lose that element of the race, but clearly that won't be allowed on health and safety grounds.

I don't get why Vaires-sur-Marne were the rowing and white water is, isn't the back up swim location, it's about 30KM into central Paris from there, so you could have got the bike done pretty much that way

Quite a few things take place outside Paris though, football, sailing, shooting, rowing.
  • The Daily Mirror on Pidcock.

But on the slopes of Elancourt, this was the greatest victory on French soil since Agincourt

You'd have to say the same about 2012 then. I think we only organised rowing, canoeing, and sailing outside of London.

Not supporting the idea of using The Seine by the way. Can see what they wanted to achieve, but it was never going to work.

I get the idea of wanting to use the Seine but this should have been ditched months ago when it was clear it was never going to be clean enough for competition.

    Clearly no Plan B.

"Fail to prepare. Prepare to fail ".

    The new Paris Olympic motto.

Pierre De Coubertin will be turning in his grave.

Shooting horses!!! That's a bit far.

Nathan Hales 28 year old from Kent wins gold while his competitors wilt in the sun.
48 hits from 50 which is an olympic record.
The silver was won by a Chinese guy who hit 44 from 50.

The Guatemalan who won bronze only got it because he had a lower bib number than the Swedish guy who got the same score as him!
