They did have a few gold medal hopes and some are still bubbling along. Carolina Marin is usually a safe bet for a gold medal in Badminton but she injured herself very badly in the quarter finals and was forced to retire. The water polo team are going strong as is at least one of the handball teams, and Alcaraz looked a good bet for gold but Djorkovic turned on the magic in the final.North Lower Neil said:

"A precocious child is very clever, mature, or good at something, often in a way that you usually only expect to find in an adult." Not a negative word.
Not knocking their dedication and talent, but Sky Brown at 16 is actually the oldest of the medal winners, the winner being 14, and runner up 15. To me gymnastics made the correct decision to raise the minimum age to 16, and as a result of which the competitors have longer and healthier careers, without the psychological and physical issues from competing at too young an age.

I may be watching older footage, but in the cycling, there is a bloke showing the sprinters the time/splits as they go past, and he was showing them times that were 'green' almost indicating they were ahead, when they were behind?1

Basketball is pretty big here, the men's* olympic team got slated for their performance.
The badminton girl that had to pull out with an injury was a gold medal hope, water polo and handball they seem to love as well.
