It is a real horrible event for all concerned, it ruins lives.  The loved ones left to grieve and wonder what else the could have done, the train driver and passengers, but also the emergency service personnel required to clean up and ensure the situation is resolved without too much more suffering. If those ending their lives in this way understood all this they probably wouldn't do it, but their despair blinds them to all but a need to no longer be a burden.

Quite a lot of drivers involved in suicides don't drive again....often end up working as shunters in railway depots/yards.

Agreed and well said Clem, I think most reasonable human beings can accept you can feel sorry for everyone involved, yes the train driver who has been involved in a horrific traumatizing event but also the poor soul who saw no other recourse than taking their own life. 

Plenty of other ways of taking your own life than to involve others that could then traumatise them.

I don’t want to derail this thread so I will keep it civil, but as someone who has gone through months of therapy and medication after having suicidal thoughts this shows such a deep lack of understanding of mental health issues.

Incant imagine what people must be going through at at point of being in a position to end it all, and we should all talk about our feelings more often, as the world is a mentally dangerous place.

in my opinion, I kinda agree with Golfie about impacting someone else life, that person that is driving the train has deal with that for the rest of his life, and may lead to mental health issues moving forward. I totally get Thorpe wouldn’t have been thinking straight at that point.. 

FYI Thorpe is was on of my biggest sporting idols growing up, remember forcing my parents to buy all the same cricket equipment as his.

he was a legend of the game, and by all accounts a good bloke.. but the impact he may have caused an innocent person doesn’t sit well with me personally.

Your opinion is coming from a completely uninformed prospective though, as you yourself say ‘I can’t imagine myself going through something like that’.

You have absolutely zero fucking idea what it’s like. Last summer I spent days curled up on the bathroom floor, unable to do anything - but try and survive until the night time where I might get a few hours of sleep if I was lucky.

To then spend those night time hours awake feeling so desperate, and so hopeless, that the thoughts circling around my head were focusing on the ways that I wanted to kill myself and how my family, and friends would react if did.

To go through it all again the next day.

Of course you can say it,but it also shows a lack of understanding of the mind set of someone about to commit suicide. My best friend survived at least one suicide attempt before successfully throwing himself from the top of a multistory car park in Reading. Was he being selfish as someone would have to clear up the mess of his smashed body or was he so depressed that put him in a dark place which completely enveloped him and halted any reasonable thought processes?

And of course everyone will feel for the train driver and others that had to clear up after the event.

Of course.. more my points the other day, which prob didn't come across correctly, is the knock-on effect it has, the train driver could go into depression and could also question life as well post it...

But as I said, and people have said on here, people are not thinking at that point! 

Thorpe was a legend, and my idol growing up. And Skysports on the coverage yesterday, did a wonderful tribute and the statements from the family were so strong!
