Saw Dr Strangelove last night. Knew nothing about it having not seen the film but really enjoyed it. Very clever. Much funnier than I thought it was going to be. Great theatre and great seats. Used some theatre vouchers.
Also saw Les mid for the 48362th time last week but not been for at least 10 years. Loved it. Hideously expensive to sit in decent seats though so sat up high. Still loved the show but cannot believe it’s that much but tourists clearly pay it! Mum wants to see the Ball and Boe Les mis tour but it’s not in London only up north which is disappointing.

Many thanks for posting this. The reason I say it is because I had no idea that ‘Three Sisters’ was coming up at the Globe. Saw the Cherry Orchard at the Donmar earlier this year, and will see The Seagull at the Barbican in March. All I need now is to find a credible Uncle Vanya coming up soon, and with the Three Sisters tickets (hope they’re not sold out) that will be all of Chekhov’s major plays within a year!
It’ll be a tiny version of ground hopping or doing the 92😀 Going to an RSC production of Midsummer Nights Dream at the Barbican as soon as my nephew scores me the free tickets he has been promised by his company. Chekhov is derided and criticised by many, but like Shakespeare endures for a reason.
Heads up for those who are not aware, the National Theatre's "Nye", with Micheal Sheen, is available for free on You Tube from tonight at 7PM until the 11th.
Went to the Old Vic last night to see A Christmas Carol. John Simm is playing Ebenezer Scrooge this year. I thought his performance was fantastic and worth the ticket price alone. We go every year so there is not exactly anything much new to think about except each new lead brings a slightly different personality to the character. An excellent production based in a part of London not million miles from where Dickens based his novel. At the end of the performance Simms, as with all previous leads we have seen, makes a short speech about poverty and the unbelievable amount of people in this country who are stuck in poverty and hardship. The Old Vic supports a local charity every year and this year it was a local food bank who helped 25,000 people last year, for which there is a collection at each show. Over a 150 years since Dickens wrote Scrooge, many things have changed for the better but not for everyone.
This evening I saw a Midsummer Nights Dream at the Barbican. Royal Shakespeare Company production. I saw a different RSC production of the play some ten years ago at Stratford on Avon. The production tonight nicked a couple of ideas from the previous one, but it was fun, spectacularly staged, lots of physicality, and slightly anarchic. The one a decade ago was more classical, also well staged and beautiful. I thought some of the choices made could have been better, for example Theseus was kind of like King Charles, and Oberon like Adam Ant. As usual the best part and character was Bottom. Thinking back MSND is probably the play I have seen the most, as well as studying it, acting in it, and directing it in the past. I have seen every kind of staging, but like this evening, the play within a play bit always makes me laugh. With one exception, a Kabuki/Western style fusion in a small theatre in Southwark. On the setheatreometer I would give the play tonight a solid seven. Incidentally the theatre was full.

Robin Hood this year (though the actual title is rather irrelevant tbh) with the same excellent cast was very funny again provided you’ve got a sense of humour. Fair play to the rather naff Jane McDonald whose voice was excellent. Lots of digs at her being a northerner. Very adult humour that would go over the heads of most kids. Highly recommended. 10/10

I went to Esher theatre to see the opening night of Robin Hood pantomime with Bobby Davro as the leading star and my mate Peter Straker making an appearance. A good performance by all and a funny second half.

Saw 'Earnest' couple of weeks ago. I like the play and know it well and the wife likes Ncuti. Very faithful to the text but with a couple of changes musically and some 'modern' asides. I enjoyed it and it was still laugh out loud even if I was waiting for the line....
Saw Nick Mohammed's A Christmas Carolish at Soho Place last week.
Daughter and I both enjoyed it. Nick does the whole show as his Mr Swallow character who is infuriating and hilarious in equal measure. Think it's pretty much sold out, but worth seeing if you can get tickets.
Have our annual Drag Panto visit on Monday. Peter Pan at The Phoenix Theatre. These are usually filthy, but very funny.

Saw Strangelove and Earnest a few nights apart a few weeks ago. Enjoyed both but not to a superlative extent. At intervals had a few doubts but happier by the end. V good performances by Coogan and Gatwa. Odd how such very different subject matter provoked similar reactions.

Saw this about a month ago thanks to Little Miss Idle getting us tickets. I really enjoyed it. The physical elements, the ingenuity of the set design and the pace of the production are excellent. The kids will love it.

My daughter and I are Mischief Theatre "Uber Fans". Have tickets for the Comedy About Spies already. They are also starting up their improv show "Movie Night" for a limited run next week. Have tickets for a couple of those as well. Believe they are live streaming next weeks shows. If you like improv comedy I can highly recommend these, they shows are generally chaos but very very funny.

Went to see it last night after switching the date of our original tickets due to illness.
i honestly wasn’t expecting much and whilst it took a while to get going, it was a fantastic show. The guy playing Daniel was very talented.
Got cheap tickets in the Friday Forty lottery thing for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, took my eldest.
Storyline isn't the best, but the special effects and illusions are incredible - so many different effects too, not just the same tricks repeating. Apparently they have a team of magicians/illusionists, lighting and sound guys etc setting it all up and teaching the actors slight of hand.
We were in the second row and couldn't see wires, trap doors, stage hands at all, so it's so smooth. There was one 'shockwave' type thing they did a few times that i thought was so cool.
