POST-MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic v Reading: Saturday 4th January 2025: KO 15:00

Reading visited the Valley this afternoon having won their last three. Despite all of their long-existing ownership challenges, their manager having walked away, and young side they’ve made a great start to the season, challenging in the playoff places. Charlton have also won their last three and were looking to continue the momentum. Jones elected to go with the same starting eleven that’s turned things around of late and beleaguered striker Chuks Aneke was named in the squad for the first time in an ice November’s injury.

Reading got off to a good start and went on to make things difficult for Charlton in the first half. They had opportunities, more than one guilt edge, to go into the break one, two, or three goals to the good. But Charlton were resolute and, on the odd occasion, fashioned their own chances, mostly through Thierry Small on the right and Tyreece Campbell on the left. The half ended goalless.

Reading began the second half where they left off. Conversely, Charlton didn’t get started until after sixty minutes and from that point on they knocked and knocked on the door but were unable to find the breakthrough goal. Campbell, Docherty, and Small all got into good positions and tested the Reading keeper, but the best chance fell to Miles Leaburn who was unable to break the deadlock. The Reading keeper at times lived a charmed life and it seemed that there just wouldn’t be anything to separate the two sides today.

Charlton 0 Reading 0

Over to you.

1-0, 2-0 would not have been unjust.

Savage best player on the park, as per against us.

We won’t not pick up 3 points playing like that rest of the season, we missed some big chances and another day score 3.

Defence solid again. Midfield 2 starting to gel now, both Coventry and Docherty work hard and we don’t seem to have big holes in the middle.

Small please mate, have a bit of composure ffs. Be a champ player if he took some time to think.

Thierry Small is such an interesting player.
He’s got bags of pace and ability, but is also prone to miscontrolling simple balls - he either failed to control a pass to him or had a heavy touch when dribbling on numerous occasions. He also loses any composure when he sees the opportunity to shoot. If he can iron these flaws out he’ll be a fantastic player.

(I put this in the match thread, but it’s closed now)

Half way through the season. First half of the season feels like a wasted opportunity. Today we showed we can be a decent side but too many games we’ve been well off where we were today.

Ref didn't cost us the game but was total rubbish. Small should have passed his big chance into the net. We didn't get the run of the ball in front of goal but Reading were one of the better sides as their ecent results testify to.

Very close. It flicked off Leaburn and then their man. Looking forward to seeing it on the highlights.

I feel robbed. That has to be our best performance for no goals. I hope that ref got the offside correct or it will be salt in the wound. TC the best player on the pitch for us.

We also could have scored in the first half. 0-0 or 1-1 would have been fair. Could never have been 0-3.
Second half we battered them. How we haven’t got the three points I have no idea. Well, poor finishing I guess, but we’re now playing much better, and yet we’re now 7 points from 6th, albeit with a game in hand. Let’s hope they keep their heads up.
  • somewhat nice to come away from a game gutted at not taking all 3pts, after the first half of the season we've had!

So frustrating that almost every shot on target goes straight to the keeper - didnt even really make him work.
We play so much better having width to out performance, but its clear that Small and TC think theyre better than they are - so wasteful and nonchalant when attacking, and rather than beating their man they both prefer to check back or try a few fancy step overs- just get it in the box if youre not going to drive!!!

Defence looks solid, albeit gilesphey scares me everytime hes on the ball - our only real weak link there. Midfield solid too but with no magic or class to it.

Should really have won, but it keeps reading in touching distance... really need to start picking up points, especially the 6 pointers

Looked well offside to me on the telly.

I do think it was likely off, marginally. He was well ahead of the centre backs but there was a full back close to playing him on.
  • I thought we were excellent today to be fair, so frustrating not to get the win. Their keeper has made at least two fantastic saves, as well as the clearance off the line from Leaburn’s shot when he dropped it.

At other times we could have been more clinical in front of goal, but I can’t really be upset about the overall performance. The trouble with our awful form September-mid December means that we’ve put ourselves under a lot of pressure in the table, so you just can’t drop too many points if you want to stay competitive.

Small is the biggest enigma in the side. 80% of what he does is utterly brilliant & the other 20% is absolutely horrendous 😂😂

Really good game of football, Reading came out and tried to get their noses in front, then we dominated, same pattern in the second half. Could have won it but both keepers kept their sides in it. I suppose you could consider it points dropped but the performance was very good.

Frustrating not to win but isn;t it nice to be playing with more style!! the players look more comfortable in this system. how anyone cannot have been entertained is beyond me but then we are a weird fanbase. A point in case is the poor marks/comments Gillesphey receives whether he plays well or shit. thought he gave a very solid performance today

23 games played and 34 points attained.

Need 41 from the remaining 23 to get to the 75 mark that’s usually needed for top six.

Good game. Fair result, just. They had midfield for the first hour. Then it was all us. Small wasted far too many good opportunities, and TCs finishing is poor, though he took the disallowed goal well. Gillesphey had a nightmare first ten minutes but was excellent after and Jones was immense. On to the next one... COYA

Way more chances than them, not conceded … all good to see but we do need to make more of our chances.
  • Should their player have been sent off end of first half when booked for tackle on Edwards?  Looked a poor, uncontrolled challenge to me in real time at the game.

Brum, Wycombe, Wrexham & Stockport all away from home will be a tough ask

I’ll take the 80%.  Him and Campbell are the reason why we’ve somewhat improved .

Few people said this, not sure I get it. 3 pea rollers straight at him and he nearly gifted us a goal. Did well, but Savage was immense. His tackle against TC was quality, made up about 40 yards.
  • A really entertaining game to watch as well I thought, particularly for a 0-0. So much more fun to watch us now than a month ago - worlds away!
