Going to moan about the bench as well. It's still ridiculously unbalanced. I don't see the need for 3 strikers and if Anderson is there, why do we need Campbell as well?
Every time I have seen Whing play for Reading I have been impressed - would love to get him in. Knibbs was less effective than he has been against us in the past. I like Sam Smith as well, clever footballer and given his size he leads the line really well.
No doubt things have improved and there is a level of resilience there, but the concern for me is what happens if we loose Jones again? He leads the defensive line so we'll and we don't have a replacement for that.
Gillesphey played well and has done so recently.
Jones and Mitchell did nothing similar.
Who was it who got bullied by Smith for their one big chance and ended up on the floor?2 -

In fairness, good crossing isn’t something we’ve seen consistently from Ramsay yet. The other side of it he’s not played in this system, he’s only been part of the team when we played very defensively and hoofball.
This system would demand he pushes high and uses his pace to add width and take players on. It would be interesting to see how he adapts if/when he gets a run of games.6 -

i was doing lino for my son's team about a month ago and gave offside for this and was overruled by the referee who said what you have above even though i didfn't and don't agree with it but would have helped today if that's the rule - the ref didn't know his arse from his elbow todayEastTerrace said:As far as I know, if a an opposition player plays the ball (which I think he did), then TC becomes onside again.1 -

As it happens, Gillesphey’s best game for us was last week against Wycombe. Good today, although a couple of dodgy moments and not quite to that standard*. Hopefully, these aren’t two blips and he finally settles down and performs week in, week out.*just to be clear, we’re League 1, I don’t expect perfection, or even solid performances every week, but Gillesphey has been very poor since he joined. Two decent performances in a row and I really hope that continues.0 -
Jones was superb again. Defended brilliantly, but on top of that his passing to Campbell and particularly to Small was excellent indeed.
Edwards had a great game too.
Small & Campbell were both brilliant up to the final cross/shot. Shame, but both are very young and we need to keep them.
Docherty had another good game too.
Enjoyed watching and we played some really nice football at times.

a comment on Small, that was a decent all round performance. Yes his decision making in and around the opposition area has to improve. But this comes about because of his ability to run past defenders, or trick his way past them , also today he did the defensive role bloody well. there must have been at least 3 occasions that with his pace he ran 30 or 40 yards to get a tackle in on a Reading player who had broken forward and looked like he may have the beating of Gillesphy or Mitchel.6

Shame we couldn't win but at least we didn't lose. One point is better than none and gets us closer to safety which has to be the first target.1

Reading missed two huge chances at the start of the 2nd half....that shouldn't be overlooked.
After that Charlton weren't bad and gave it a go. I'd like to have seen Aneke paired with Leaburn for that last 15 mins (Campbell into Berry's spot).
Nothing wrong with the overall effort. Small was heavily involved but ultimately failed to capitalise on a) tons of space b) some good crossfield balls. Shame....he gave it his best shot but an almost total lack of a right foot stopped him from being the deciding factor.
Gillesphey is another curate's egg of a player. Started very badly....the first three things he did were calamitous....but ultimately he got his headers won and played some good balls. He definitely played a big part in the clean sheet. The goalie and other CBs were generally strong.
For a 0-0 it was good. The fact that we finished strongly, made me feel like I'd seen a game.
Lastly, Campbell rolling around on the deck long after being flagged was hilarious. GREAT finish but nicely comical too. One for the dressing room fines' committee, that one. Ps...he didn't have a bad game at all....very wholehearted.1 -
It has to be a 'deliberate play', it's not sufficient for the defender just to touch the ball (Law 11.2)

yes - intercepting it is deliberate - my argument is that he wouldn't be trying to intercept it if the player who is offside (when the ball is kicked) wasn't there - its a ridiculous rule if intercepting overrides a player being offside - anyway, it was ruled off and that's that i guess - i enjoyed the game and we are playing much better - still need 2 or 3 more attacking pacy threats if we are to stand a chance of going up through the playoffs though - i would have put chucks on for berry last 20 - we just didn't have enough to break them in the end.newyorkaddick said:

Obviously a subjective call by the referee (rather than the AR who presumably informed him in his earpiece that it was his decision, hence kept his flag down)....think they got it right as would be harsh to call it a deliberate 'play' (implying a degree or control) when only a yard or two awayDOUCHER said:

The lads did well, fought hard, put the effort in and second half bar the first 10 were playing like we have wanted them play all season. Bad luck and hasty decisions stopped us scoring. Deserved a win but I enjoyed the fact they tried to play and looked to win it. Good effort0

I singled him out v Wycombe as having his best game for us.
Today, sadly, I thought he was very clearly the weak link in an overall strong defensive display by us. I hope we find a suitable replacement this month.3 -
An entertaining game and a very good all-round team performance from Charlton which, with a bit more composure or luck, would have yielded 3 points. With a number of shots going through bodies and directly at the keeper and Dean clearing Leaburn's shot off the line, you just felt it was not going to be our day and so it proved. We certainly finished much the stronger side, although without detracting from our efforts, that may, in part, have been attributable to Reading's extra game on New Year's Day and the fact that their squad was a bit depleted by injuries.
We were generally solid at the back, with particular shout outs to the imperious Lloyd Jones and Josh Edwards. Docherty did well in midfield, particularly in the first half with some lovely switches of play, whilst Campbell gave Reading's defenders plenty of trouble. Thierry Small did so as well, but needs to work on his composure. He is, however, one of the reasons why we've been so much brighter in recent games.
I think we've got too much to do in the second half of the season to make the top 6 but all we can do is to try and maintain a good level of performance and see where it takes us. The football we are playing is certainly far more entertaining than that served up in the first 4 months of the season.5 -
A solid performance today, we're definitely in a much better place than a couple of games ago, as while the return of Jones has tightened things up at the back, we now have much more of an attacking threat, and pose a goal threat. Unfortunately our shots were either straight at their keeper (or the player on the line) or slashed wide.
Gillesphey had a shocking start, and while he improved after that, he was too weak at the start of the second half, giving Reading their best chance, and forcing AMB into a sharp bit of keeping.
What the last few games have shown is that yet again we've ended up with an unbalanced squad. Usually it's because we've changed the managed, but in this case it's because the manager has changed tactics, leaving us with a glut of central strikers, and a lack of pacey wide attackers. We really needed like for like replacements for TC and Small after 70 minutes, and instead had 3 central strikers on the bench.3 -
I’m not sure Mbengue deserved a red, in my opinion it was nowhere near as dangerous as Clare’s tackle. I think he was helped too by having been challenged from behind by Docherty, for which Reading were awarded a free kick, which took him into the tackle on Edwards. For a 0-0 it was an entertaining game. The sort of game that Charlton fans want to see. Energy, endevour, front footed football. The hoofball has been decreasing, and passing through midfield increasing. Jones and Mitchell were demanding the ball from AMB to give them the ball to build attacks. There appeared to be a lack of communication sometimes, and the goalie was hesitant to roll it out to them, resulting in some long spells where AMB had the ball, but eventually waived the backline forward to allow him to punt the ball downfield. Work on the training ground is needed to sort out when to build from the back and when to play it short to the defenders.
It was a good watch overall, even though we didn't see Charlton score.
My only criticism is the delivery from corners and free kicks. Berry took them from the left and Josh Edwards from the right, to create inswinging corners. All of them were poor, and a couple led to dangerous breakaway counter attacks. We didn't have many free kicks, but those were invariably poor. It does amase me, that in a decent league 1 team we don't have anyone who can deliver a deadball accurately. Arsenal and others have shown that corners and free kicks can be a potent attacking weapon, work needs to be done in this area.4 -
