I watched the league highlights show last night and many of the pitches are as crap as our own, the difference is that they probably didn't pay a fortune relaying theirs.Have just clicked onto a recent Bromley game and their pitch looks in fantastic condition. They were non-league last season and had to pull up their 3g for a grass one.Perhaps we should make contact with them on who did their work.
I seem to recall a very recent groundsman for us kept our pitch in fantastic shape. I think he may be down at Gillingham now.

I wonder why Colchester's is persistently so bad? Bad ground design? Seems like they get more called off than average and when they do play it looks even worse than ours0

The rest is pretty grim.

If that is the case, then it’s very remiss of whoever is/was responsible for their upkeep and storage, that a decent quantity should have been kept in stock…..Mmmm 🤔0 -

Its all about money, or the lack of it in the pitches case5 -
A question…..does anyone know if the pitch will need reseeding?0

So long as they have the same fitting, are 240volt supply and emit light of similar wattage, surely they have to be better than 45 - 50% not functioning at all?
Even if it's partly for appearances sake? The gappy array across the top of the West Stand just looks so Gillingham.
Today's bulbs are gonna be LED. The items to be replaced are far too old to have been LED when they were installed
It's a really odd bit of penny pinching
We can't be more than 5 or 6 units away from some tinpot martinet referee calling off an evening game cos he reckons it ain't bright enough - specially in the North West corner where they're more off than on.1 -
This thread is really doing my OCD in, it’s lamps, you plant bulbs in your garden10

Strand Electric are a Theatrical lighting and other type of lighting company and their stock seems huge and varied.
I wonder what a one day consultation with an expert would cost the club.1 -

Does it matter what wattage they are and which way up you plant them ?3 -

I actually thought the pitch looked a bit better Saturday than the previous weeks (not by much)0

The bulbs aren't readily available as the lamps are so old.
The club has found a firm that can make retro bulbs to order but it takes time to do that.
It would appear that the first batch have arrived and @Swisdom or his firm have installed those hence his comment about it taking time.
The root of this is the club's failure under Operations Manager Tony Keohane to properly fund or plan for ongoing maintenance so no stock of bulbs and no installation of LED lights.
Successive owners have penny pinched on the Valley while wasting millions on players and vanity projects. I hope the current lot have learnt the lesson and will fix the roof on a sunny day (that is a metaphor and not a comment on any leaks in the roof at the Valley).23 -
A makeshift solution could be to work out which lamps/bulbs/lights work, and try to rearrange them so there's not gaping holes in the floodlight lineup as it stands? Say 20% of them are faulty, you just line them up in a 4 on, 1 off arrangement, and I don't think anyone would notice6
-
It seems they have a solution. If a few additional bulbs have already been sorted then we can surely lose that number and still have the same light which has been acceptable so far. I would imagine LED floodlights may even get cheaper in a few years so no problem keeping the lights we have now and fixing the broken ones where we can.
As Henry has said, the issue is more that they didn't have a solution earlier but then we know what previous regimes were like. I don't know what the electricity cost differential is in a season, but I would imagine keeping the old bulbs and replacing them is sensible enough for a ground you don't own.0 -

There used to be lights hanging down from underneath the Curbs Stand roof. A year or 2 ago, one of them became dislodged and was rocking in an alarming way, requiring all the supporters underneath to be moved elsewhere.
It was then removed and never replaced, and from memory all the others have been removed too, and similarly not replaced.0 -

Most of the lights in the north west corner were working.0 -
Who knew we had so many lighting experts on here?
I guess the Saturday morning job in the BHS lighting department had to come in handy eventually.2 -
