I think it really doesn't matter what Alfie May is doing any more. Personally, I like him and sort of hope he does well - except that I really don't like the Millwall of the Midlands, so I hope he doesn't do that well. He drew a disproportionate amount of attention at the start of this season because: 1. He was our leading scorer for a couple of seasons; 2. Most Charlton supporters were disappointed, and perhaps even shocked, when he left; 3. Many Charlton supporters were concerned that he couldn't be adequately replaced; 4. At the start of the season were playing boring football with too few goals and putting too few points on the table. That is all history now. We know that Godden is more than adequate as a replacement, meanwhile the whole of the team has clicked and is now performing better than we could have reasonably hoped. The King is dead, long live The King.7

Who would swap Godden for May now if offered the chance? I wouldn't in all honesty. Maybe one or two would but I think most wouldn't.7

He'll be satisfied with the money but Alfie likes to be the main man, likes to feel important and likes to be getting the adulation from the stands. He can get very sulky when things don't go his way and his confidence can disappear pretty quickly. For all football fans are incapable of accepting people earning a lot of money can still be pissed off he'll be annoyed that two more strikers were brought in over him after he signed and that he didn't contribute as much as he would have wanted to the title win. Still, 10 games left so if he goes on another one of his scoring streaks he could still end up with 15 goals and it'll look a bit brighter
Unless he told you this?0 -

Here we go again May v Golden, let's get some facts straight here, Alfie didn't engineer a move, he was happy to stay and see out his contract, source his own brother! it was only after Jones told him he would only be a squad player that he sought a move, his goals kept us up last season 28 was it in a bloody poor side, Jones when he came in said he concentrated on shoring up the defense and making us hard to beat well who was getting us points by scoring at the other end, I like Golden I do but 12 league goals 3/4 of the way through the season is hardly setting the league alight, I am not criticising Godden as I genuinely think his all round game is better than Alfie's but let's show some appreciation here as we could easily be in league 2 without Alfie's goals last season14

Godden is a good player who uses his body well and is clever with his movement. I support NJ building his own team and clearly Godden suited that better. But in terms of pure individual performance for Charlton, Godden hasn't been better then May.

A lot of talk about feeling sorry for him that he's not scoring now etc.
He was here for 1 season, and whilst he scored a lot of goals in that season we finished closer to the bottom than the top.
Some people paint him up as this modern day Charlton legend, which is just bizarre
Godden is a better fit for our current team, and whilst we have a small chance of playing championship football next season, I reckon despite Birmingham going up, Alfie May will be in League 1 again regardless6 -
Godden has 12 goals but people are forgetting that he's only started 20 games. He's played 1782 minutes in total so he scores every 148 minutes.
May has 10 goals but started 23 games. 1906 minutes so a goal every 190 minutes.
Last season May got 23 from 40 starts. 3470 minutes so a goal every 150 minutes.
So there's very little between Godden this season and May last season.
Some people could argue if we still had May then he might have scored more, but personally i think that's unlikely as we were awful up until December and creating nothing. You could also argue if Godden had started more than 20 games then he'd probably have a few more goals.
Both are good strikers at this level and i really don't think there's too much in it.18 -
If we had still had May this season he would have started the same number of games as Godden under NJ - rotating with Leaburn and would have a very similar return to Godden I expect. Alfie wanted to play every week so he got his move. Everybody is happy in this scenario so I don't really see the issue now.3

Ultimately it was the right decision because we have improved immeasurably from last season.
Does that make May a bad player, or Godden better than him. Of course not.
But football and winning leagues is much more than just down to one players individual talents.4 -
Holden wrongly set his side up in a way that May could get maximum goal exposure...even to the detriment of letting load of goals in at the other end.
Jones saw that and addressed it immediately, probably to the amazement of May..
Worked out well for everyone in the end.2 - Sponsored links:

Something that hasn’t been mentioned is their discipline in the press, Godden and TC worked really well together to press the Wigan back line and keeper and that’s not something I ever saw with May. He pressed and ran around but it lacked the discipline that Godden has, it actually means Godden has to run less4
-
The problem we had last season was that the team was basically built around May scoring.
If he didn’t score, we had nothing else because we couldn’t keep the ball out of the net at the other end.
It’s not a coincidence that that awful string of losses and draws we went on coincided with May only scoring once in about 17 games.
We had nothing else to offer if May was out of form. That’s why we were so perilously close to getting relegated at one point.9 -

Both Alfie May and Matt Godden are great poachers in the box but Alfie was usurped at Birmingham when they signed Jay Stansfield from Fulham for 15 million at the end of August.
Alfie joined the Brum on 2nd July so he knew he was playing 2nd fiddle to the 21 year old when Jay turned up. Alfie's wages may have trebled* so Mr and Mrs May will be happy. He is still on the pitch nearly every game and he will get a chance of Championship football next season you would assume, as he will still have 2 years to run.
It certainly looked a strange decision by Nathan Jones last season but it feels both players are happy now and Godden has come home nearer to the garden of England and his birth City of Canterbury and at long last CAFC are contenders 👏🏻
*Estimate, but will be by far the best contract of May's career.

I don’t think there’s a big gap between them, but Godden suits this system a lot better than May.7 -

Blokes off his head, but he's our nutter now and it's far easier to read with a smile while playing as well as we are. What a ride this season has been so far !.2 -
