Godden in the first half was just as good as Leaburn in the air, if not better. Look at how high he was jumping and how well he timed headers. Second half he was tired and you could see he wasn't timing them as well, but he's way better in the air than people are giving him credit for
I honestly can't recall Godden winning a header tbh, but I'm not sure it matters. He led the line better than he has before. He's looked desperate to get back into the team after being left out, which was the right decision at the time, but it's good to see him more fired up and affecting games. On the other hand, for a senior pro, you'd expect him to be doing that all the time.

In some quarters there seems to be a belief that when we go long, the striker is supposed to head it to one of our players. But that rarely happens at any team, and I'd argue it's not the aim. The striker just has to get something on it or stop the CB from making full contact so we can contest the second ball higher up the pitch.

Leaburn is the same height as Peter Crouch and I've no doubt he'll become a more dominant force in the air. But no young player comes into the team and starts smashing experienced CBs. The youth game is played entirely on the floor, it takes years to pick it up.
He won 50% of his aerial duels yesterday. Leaburn’s season percentage for that is 50.5% so they’re similar. I would say that Godden’s look to be more controlled.

Fair enough. Godden is 42.9% over the season according to FotMob.

Interestingly, WhoScored puts Myles as 1st in the league for aerial duels won (strikers).

In part that will be down to how direct we’ve played a lot of the time

FotMob has Miles in the 96th percentile for total aerial duels won (111) and 89th percentile for aerial duels won percentage (50.5%).
That is pretty good considering that stat will also include CBs.
  • I thought Godden was excellent in the first half last night. Best I’ve seen from him, although I have always said that “i like him”.

However he faded second half. Nobody was surprised, it now seems to be accepted that at his age he cannot do full 90s, at least not with impact.

Despite being only a year or so younger, Alfie May was a constant menace from the first to 98th minute. That’s the most important of several reasons why Godden was never a good replacement for May.
I'm surprised we're not making more use of Kanu.
I thought in the big games when we were desperate for points last season he ran defences ragged.

Quite apart from his quality on the pitch I feel that Godden seems to be a fairly likeable guy in general. He does his job, he gets on with it and doesn't get stroppy too much if he has to wait for his chance - but when he does get the opportunity he'll work hard to keep his place.

Got a contract to see out the end of his career and living back locally, hopefully he's made enough dough and been sensible with it and can cruise along and enjoy his time with us.

Yep I like that a lot about him too. He’s definitely one of the most natural finishers in the division so it would be easy to have got frustrated by not playing as often lately.

But he got his start, played well and scored and now there’s an argument for starting him again on Saturday.

Shudder. That expression reminds me of the likes of Gunter, Ben Watson and Hector.

    Poor wording, sorry.
  • Don't all shout at once, but please can someone summarise why Alfie May left?
How could he not be in Jones' plans after all the goals he scored last season?
  • Godden is not as good as May but is quality and we should be starting with him and Leaburn up top if we can find a way to make it work

Depending on who you ask you will get different answers. The "official" answer seems to be that Jones either felt that May doesn't do enough off the ball and "only" scores goals and/or that having him in the team meant that the tactic to score goals would only ever be "Get the ball to Alfie May."

If this is true, and if he was right is still being debated and probably will carry on being talked about until the heat death of the Universe.

My take on it, based entirely on heresay, rumour and my own speculation, is as follows:

    1. Jones is appointed manager in January 2024
    2. Despite his undoubted scoring prowess May didn’t fit the way that Jones wanted us to play.
    3. By around March 2024 - May found his minutes on the pitch limited and he was playing out of position on occasion.
    4. Summer 2024 - Huddersfield put in a bid which we accepted and May, with better chances of game time, maybe some more money and being closer to family up north was keen and as he wasn’t an automatic starter for us we accepted the bid.
    5. Day May travels to Huddersfield for his medical - Birmingham made a bid which was more lucrative for us and May.
    6. Forever after - I moan on Internet forums about Charlton selling Alfie May.

Godden has had a better career than May and I would say there is not that much between them. We can argue one way or the other using different facts. With May you could argue that he was League One top scorer in a shit team. But you could also argue he was part of a shit team.
  • I still say we sold him to raise funds to buy players because our owners will not fund a transfer kitty

It looks even more to be the case as we have not spent a penny in this transfer window

We sell Leaburn in the summer and it’s rinse and repeat
Exactly as I see it, along with Charlie boy telling the owners it can be done that way.
