Jones is desperately chucking out any positive statements he can lately (as he knows he’s on borrowed time & should be gone by now in light of the crap he’s serving up on the pitch).

In addition to his Godden v May comparison, we’ve heard…

”We’ve been excellent in the cups” (even though we played U21 kids in one of those competitions & just got past non league Southend in the other!)

”We had more shots than Crawley”

”We’re improving & not in a bad place!”

“We now have a team of players that want to play for Charlton” (like we should be grateful that players that are paid thousands want to play).

100% time for the guy to go. I’m hoping the only reason it hasn’t happened yet is because the cost needs rubber stamping from the yanks or we’re waiting for confirmation that a successor we have lined up is ready to join.

It's honestly not even worth a discussion. He's the best striker in the league, and was our best player by a mile.

Godden isn't anywhere near him and it's unfair on Godden to compare them at this stage. Would have been more fair if it was Godden 4 years ago.

May offers so much more on the pitch than Godden, and if you can't see that then you're either purposely ignoring it or are a moron. Our front 3 was so immobile last night, and part of the problem is Godden is only useful inside the box. May would run for the shirt for every second he was on the pitch, Godden is largely anonymous for huge periods of play.

Don’t think Jones understands what scoring is.
That really tickled me, genuinely laughed out loud!

Thought May had a decent game against Wrexham. He was playing as more of a 10 than a 9. But I think he actually prefers this, and wants to drop in and get more involved on the ball, and he will still score plenty as he did in the 10 for us.

I think that’s why him and Jones didn’t see eye to eye and Jones was visibly frustrated with him last season at times, Jones wanted him on the last shoulder, running the channels like Campbell is now and Kanu was last season
Jones patently doesn’t like players who do their own thing from time to time rather than sticking to his sole plan for a game.

Well you said Godden is better, I'm not sure that's what's happening

(Not agreeing with the OP's statement btw)

I think that’s the crux of it. N. Jones has a clear idea in his mind of how he wants his team to play and the types of players that are required for that system. That’s why we’ve ended up with a number of midfielders that are basically the same.

The only problem is that the outcome of Jones’ vision of the structure of the squad has been a fairly enormous disaster.

It's ok we've got Ahadme, Leaburn, Godden and T Campbell all creating loads of chances and scoring loads of goals 🤥
  • I am confident that (with a bit of luck), Ahadme will make it to 2 league goals at some point this season.

Are there any remaining Charlton fans that still think Godden and/or Ahadme are better players than May?

Godden once again did next to nothing before being subbed at half time.
He’s well beyond his best before date and is looking about time for the bin.

As for Ahadme, he came on fell over twice unchallenged and that was that.

We're virtually half way through the season, they'll not get 20 goals between them.

I don't understand why some people come across as so keen for others not to discuss Alfie May. Charlton Life has a smorgasbord of threads. If you don't like this one, you can graze on the next one. Had the club made an appropriate replacement for Alfie, this thread would have died a natural death. That never happened and so the thread lives on. It is living testimony to our collective disappointment at the club's lack of firepower.
Matt Godden might well score more goals than Alfie May does this season. He’s only one behind with fewer minutes played as it is.

Happy to discuss Alfie May when he’s scoring and when he’s not. Some only want to talk when he’s scoring, in order to use it as a stick to beat the club with.
It doesn't really matter to me if he's scoring or not, I think most people judge the evidence with their own eyes, and while Godden appears to be a clever finisher and good player, at this age he's not got as much to his game as Alfie did. That's why Birmingham wanted Alfie and not Godden.
I honestly don’t understand this statement. What has Alfie got to his game that Godden hasn’t?

Godden has consistently scored goals at Championship level something Alfie hasn’t done. Godden is a physically a handful for centre backs (something Alfie isn’t) and takes a penalty (as does Alfie).

Alfie is probably quicker? Arguably that is the only thing he has on Godden but Godden is hardly a slouch.

Alfie had a tendency to drift into wide positions though whereas I would argue Godden is an out and out striker! Something NJ clearly preferred.
Alfie has a tendency to score goals at this level.  That other one doesn't.

So glad we swapped him for Godden, such good business and a real upgrade on last seasons talisman.

They're finally playing him as a striker and he's scored 3 in 2. Think Stansfield is going to get pushed into playing behind. Not bad to kick a £15 million man out of the position.
