+++Reece Burke signs on a two year deal+++

edited July 9 in General Charlton
Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce the permanent signing of defender Reece Burke from Luton Town for an undisclosed fee.

The centre-back came through the West Ham United youth system and has played 196 games in English football’s top two tiers.

Burke has signed a two-year contract with the Addicks, with a club option of a third year, and becomes Nathan Jones’ fifth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Sonny CareyThomas KaminskiTanto Olaofe and Amari’i Bell

First signed by Jones for Luton in 2021, Burke explained he was pleased to be reunited with his former gaffer. He said: "I’m really pleased to be here. I’ve worked with Nathan before, it felt like we had a good connection – I felt he brought the best out of me. I know what sort of team he can build, that environment is something I want to be a part of."

Jones said: "We’re really pleased to bring Reece in - he’s a wonderful defender and a really good character. He comes to us with plenty of Premier League and Championship experience and will really add to the group."

The 6ft 2in defender joined West Ham aged nine and progressed through the youth ranks to earn his Premier League debut in 2015, and went on to pick up the club’s Young Player of the Year award for the 2014/15 campaign. This was followed by a successful season for Bradford City, where he picked up a number of the Bantams’ end-of-season awards.

Championship loans to Wigan Athletic and Bolton Wanderers followed before a permanent move to Hull City. His time there included a promotion to the Championship alongside fellow Addick Greg Docherty. Burke signed for Luton in 2021, helping them to the Premier League in 2023 and now is reunited with the man who signed him for the Hatters.

  • Just had a look at his appearances, not made more than 20 ish per season for the past two years.

If he can stay fit then happy days.
  • Another good signing.

    Some early smutterings
    We have been warned.

  • But a good signing by all accounts, Cawley's write-up is very positive - all be it with the caveat of a history of injuries.
  • How many ex-Luton players is that now?

  • Release the third kit you cowards!

    …welcome Reece.
  • Seems a good signing but only if he can stay fit.
  • To be fair, if we can get a decent Right Wing-Back I'm not too bothered about his injury record. Ramsay has proven to be more than adequate, so in an ideal world, if you're rotating those two enough, we hopefully shouldnt have anything to worry about.

I still wonder though if Burke's arrival will see Ramsay going back to RWB though.
  • Sounds like a defensive version of Aneke in that he'd likely be playing at a higher level if he could stay fit.

    3.

2 defenders & a goalkeeper. From a team that has suffered back to back relegations. 🙄

Current squad has 5 as Jones and Berry are ex-Luton as well.

  • Our players stayed fit thanks in large part to the new regime that was put in place, that in itself played a large part in a successful second half of last season. May be Reece Burke will keep his fitness with us for the same reason. He has played at a higher level than many in our current squad and a higher one than we will be this season. May be we should at this time of the year not worry too much what previous clubs supporters think they know and rather trust the guy who is in charge.
