    what has he done ?
Lost an absolute load of weight after being told effectively his international career would be over if he didn't.

If it's your job to be a professional sportsman it's pretty mental that you wouldn't get yourself in at least half-decent shape.

Said from a man that is currently 122kg  :D

Bumrah confirmed to play which means he probably won't play at The Oval

    And that's why you're a lousy jockey.

If they don't pick Kuldeep here, why did they bring him on tour?

If they pick Thakur I reckon Gambhir should be sacked before the game

I am shocked that Woakes is playing. Good to see Dawson there.

I can only assume Sam Cook is in the England squad to ruin Essex's chance of staying up.

They must surely think Atkinson isn’t fit enough as I’m very surprised Woakes is playing again

Surrey clearly think the same as he will be playing for their seconds

Atkinson played for his club side a couple of weeks ago. He's getting proper minutes in his legs at least before he returns for England.

By all accounts, the England hierarchy aren't happy about that as they would have preferred him in Surrey's 1s. The ECB pay his wages but, as in the case of Bashir, can't dictate when a player is selected for his county. He's only bowled 8 overs for Spencer and I can't see on Cricinfo or Cricket Archive any reference to him playing any county game whatsoever for the 1s or 2s since the Zimbabwe Test in May.

Bizarrely, Josh Tongue will play for Notts but only in the third and fourth days of their clash with Hampshire.

I just don't think Cook has it as an international bowler. Seems like they think the same. Atkinson is on paper fit but hasn't played a first class game since last year. Equally I think with Stokes, Archer and Carse the other bowlers I don't think they are after another quick. Hence why Overton was released from the squad and Tongue hasn't been picked. We need one bowler who is more of a swing bowler, less raw pace who can get through a lot of overs. With Dawson now in the side I think it should be Potts. But Woakes is in the squad. I think this will be his last series. But for now he's there. And he fills that role.

    At least we bat deep.

There's one person that will know of Potts' skillset and whether he should be in the side and that is the England captain. He might not be playing with him for Durham but he will be getting feedback from Marcus North. Potts played against Surrey and Sussex in the CC recently and returned figures of 2-227. All told this season, he's taken 18 wickets at 40.55.

Potts has had a disappointing season.

The worst thing about the modern England way of centrally controlling players is that fringe players end up not playing at all. Cook and Bethell will be rusty as hell now.

Surely if going away from raw pace and wanting a swing bowler then Cook should be the one?

Not sure Cook is good enough for this level unfortunately

Shame they didn’t get Bethell in for Crawley im
sure they may have done had we narrowly lost the last test instead of winning it…

This could be Woakes last game, he’s been a good player for England and only needs a few to get 200 wickets I think so hopefully he does that at OT

Cook I wonder if he's basically going to end up being the nice guy version of Ollie Robinson , buckets of wickets at County level to the point you can't ignore him but it never quite works at international level.

Would still like to see him get another go though

To a certain extent yes. But I just think he isn't good enough. And seems the England setup agree.

I can't say that in most cricket chats because I work with someone who coached him as a colt and one of my close friends is now going out with someone who opened the bowling with him for years in club cricket.

Robinson though initially did well for England in home conditions.  It was his fitness and personality which cost his his place.

Pointless having Cook in the squad for the entire India series unless he's given a game.

The pitches we are now preparing at home make it very difficult for a player like Cook. He needs old school English wickets to be effective
