Pre-big injury Shearer was about on a level with Kane.
Kane has kept his level up a lot longer. International record is so good, may well end up as our most capped player and with nearly twice as many goals as anyone else.0 -
Not easy to weigh up Kane v Shearer. For example I don't think Shearer ever missed a penalty for England. The overall stats obviously favour Kane.0

Most recent The Overlap episode, Gary Neville asked the others to name a few strikers in order of best and mainly they discussed Shearer and Kane.Roy Keane was the only one to mention what a horrible player and on pitch bully (high elbows, actions when ref not looking) Shearer actually was. Everyone else saying how wonderful etc he was.Off topic, but the more I listen to that podcast, the more Roy Keane understands and knows more about football than any of the others. Carragher can have good insights too but also too biased. It would be better without Neville (only wants to shout over people) and Wright (too nice to the point it's annoying he never gets off fence about anything).0

Not sure Keane can have the cheek to call any other player nasty. I think he just doesn't like him because he got in his head that time at St James' Park and got Keane sent off.
Overall i think it's pretty clear Kane has the better stats, but for the 3-4 years he was at Blackburn, Shearer was unbelievable. Fastest player to 100 PL goals (124 games), a record that has stood for 30 years but now Haaland will obliterate it.3 -

I think it is a lot harder to be a centre forward now than it has been for years. Most of the time they are isolated and playing with their back to goal. Less proper wingers slinging crosses in, less through balls, VAR
Shearer was a powerhouse, a hunger to be first to the ball, tough hard bloke.
Harry Kane has everything bar maybe searing pace. He is such an intelligent player.
Recency bias might be at play but Kane for me is the far better player overall.
And Roy Keane is right, he was sneaky. Anyone who wasn't a Blackburn or Newcastle fan knew this and definitely anyone who had to mark him. I don't mind that to be honest, its a side a lot of players have. Keane was the opposite of sneaky, he was capable of great violence on the pitch but they both played with a similar level of intensity which I admired.
Roy Keane gets it as well, Carragher drives me up the wall he isn’t half as knowledgeable as he thinks he is. Neville is decent, on that podcast his job is to steer things and he is up against it with Carragher not listening to him or misrepresenting what he says.4 -

I also knew the linesman (David Bryan) who flagged for the offence, he was not consulted at all about the decision in the following days.
In his opinion, he said it was a deliberate elbow.1 -

To be fair he did retire from international football quite early (he was only 30). Could've easily played longer as he was still banging in goals for Newcastle for years after that.se9addick said:

Allegedly Shearer told the FA he'd quit England duty if he was done for this incident! He got away with it and Lennon was given a 5 game ban for headbutting Sir Alan's boot while laying on the floor. Justice served.MrOneLung said:
