    Certainly more likeable too.
  • Pre-big injury Shearer was about on a level with Kane.

Kane has kept his level up a lot longer.  International record is so good, may well end up as our most capped player and with nearly twice as many goals as anyone else.
  • Not easy to weigh up Kane v Shearer. For example I don't think Shearer ever missed a penalty for England. The overall  stats obviously favour Kane.

Most recent The Overlap episode, Gary Neville asked the others to name a few strikers in order of best and mainly they discussed Shearer and Kane.

Roy Keane was the only one to mention what a horrible player and on pitch bully (high elbows, actions when ref not looking) Shearer actually was. Everyone else saying how wonderful etc he was.

Off topic, but the more I listen to that podcast, the more Roy Keane understands and knows more about football than any of the others. Carragher can have good insights too but also too biased. It would be better without Neville (only wants to shout over people) and Wright (too nice to the point it's annoying he never gets off fence about anything).
  • Not sure Keane can have the cheek to call any other player nasty. I think he just doesn't like him because he got in his head that time at St James' Park and got Keane sent off.

Overall i think it's pretty clear Kane has the better stats, but for the 3-4 years he was at Blackburn, Shearer was unbelievable. Fastest player to 100 PL goals (124 games), a record that has stood for 30 years but now Haaland will obliterate it.

Curbs said:  'Jon was caught in the throat by Alan Shearer, which is why he went down and stayed down'.

Shearer said:" I cannot see how the referee or the linesman can honestly say that I deliberately used my elbow in the defender's face."I can categorically say that I didn't, I didn't even know he was there. All I was doing was protecting the ball.

Sir Bobby said: "The decision was an insult to a great player who has graced the game. I am absolutely furious about it. All Alan was doing was something he has done 40,000 times before, shielding the ball with his back to goal, nothing else.

I said: "That Shearer is a right dirty bar steward ... look at 'im,  'e can't get his own way with Fortune so he done 'im up like a kipper!  Go on, get off Shearer and good riddance!" (I was about as far away from the incident that you could get, but you know when you know :| )

Appeal: Newcastle appealed the decision, and after reviewing video evidence on the following Monday, the referee and his assistant agreed that the dismissal had been a mistake. The Football Association overturned the red card, preventing Shearer from serving a three-game ban

I think it is a lot harder to be a centre forward now than it has been for years. Most of the time they are isolated and playing with their back to goal. Less proper wingers slinging crosses in, less through balls, VAR

Shearer was a powerhouse, a hunger to be first to the ball, tough hard bloke.

Harry Kane has everything bar maybe searing pace. He is such an intelligent player.

Recency bias might be at play but Kane for me is the far better player overall.

And Roy Keane is right, he was sneaky. Anyone who wasn't a Blackburn or Newcastle fan knew this and definitely anyone who had to mark him. I don't mind that to be honest, its a side a lot of players have. Keane was the opposite of sneaky, he was capable of great violence on the pitch but they both played with a similar level of intensity which I admired.

Roy Keane gets it as well, Carragher drives me up the wall he isn’t half as knowledgeable as he thinks he is. Neville is decent, on that podcast his job is to steer things and he is up against it with Carragher not listening to him or misrepresenting what he says.

I was at that game and thought it was a red card.

I also knew the linesman (David Bryan) who flagged for the offence, he was not consulted at all about the decision in the following days.
In his opinion, he said it was a deliberate elbow.

    One season wonder...
    He only takes pens...
He offers nothing, he drops too deep...
He's not as good as <insert every mediocre striker ever to have played the game>...

He's one of the all time greats in my eyes, simple as that.

Would have him back at Spurs in a heart beat given we've got first refusal.  Richarlison or Solanke aren't fit to lace his boots (tbh, they're not fit regularly full stop!)
wouldnt it be fun if Arsenal steamed in and signed him, just for S&G.
They really should go all out for him and they they'd probably win everything in sight.

I think Roy Keane was saying it as a complement though

remember when Shearer booted someone in the face when both on the floor ?
    Was it Lennon ?

    got away with it again

Will be/is already better than Shearer? Discuss.
I asked that exactly eight years ago in September 2017. I think we have an answer.

Shearer - 283 goals in 559 league appearances plus 30 international goals in 63 appearances
Kane - 299 goals in 441 league appearances plus 74 international goals in 109 appearances

What surprises me most about that stat is that Shearer only played 63 times for England. Felt like he was the main man for about 1,000 years.

To be fair he did retire from international football quite early (he was only 30). Could've easily played longer as he was still banging in goals for Newcastle for years after that.

Also when he played there was a lot of competition up front. Owen, Fowler, Wright, Sheringham, Ferdinand. Kane basically has Ollie Watkins and that's it.

Allegedly Shearer told the FA he'd quit England duty if he was done for this incident! He got away with it and Lennon was given a 5 game ban for headbutting Sir Alan's boot while laying on the floor. Justice served.

Scored again tonight in an 8-1 win against Wolfsburg. Not only are they 11 points clear at the top, they have a +51 goal difference. Dortmund in 2nd have the next best GD at +14.

Not even halfway through their season yet and he's got 31 goals.

He’s a total joke. Deserves to have a Champions League or World Cup medal by the start of next season.

Best goal scorer on the planet bar none

    Without going off subject.

These players and decisions really rankle with me.

    1) The shearer incident above. Red Card all day long.
    2) Pat Van Der Haw (apologises for the spelling). Red Card. All day long.
    3) That wanker player for Arsenal. Raised his boot in the air to one of our players (Van Persie?). If he gets that second yellow and the way were playing in that game and season, he gets sent off rightly then we have a good chance of beating Arsenal at home ending their unbeaten run. To add insult to injury, he goes on to score and Arsenal win and continue their unbeaten run.

Shearer is an arsehole. He also had a good player in Sutton with him and the rest of the team that Dalgleish built.

Scored his 500th senior career goal. First English player to achieve that.

I have it on good authority he wants to be playing at the 2030 World Cup if he can/be selected.

If he can stay fit, the numbers could be ludicrous.
  • Bloke is phenomenal, glad he is finally picking up some silverware.

Best player to ever put on an England shirt. “Gazza was a natural talent’ blah blah blah, this geezer is the complete footballer and a proper family man. I love him.

He's great and I'll take the piss out of anything.

Nothing but respect for what he is doing sausage side.
  • The second top scorer in the Bundesliga has 13. Kane has 28.

    43 goals already this season.

Bayern have 11 league games to go, a possible 2 cup games, and a possible 7 CL games (14 games minimum and 20 games max). A very good chance he gets to 60 goals for the season.

We can't afford for him to be inured in the Summer. Who would replace him?

I love him, he has redefined the role of centre forward with how he drops off and makes things happen, feeding and making those often unproductive fast and skillful wide players do something and get in behind whilst still having the lungs and game intelligence to arrive in the box. What does a centre half do when he is doing that? Can't go with him and leave a massive gap, what midfielder picks him up and leaves their man? Jesus does this for Arsenal and it is a real problem

I can't emphasise how much he is going to be missed when he retires.

One thing though, I'd always struggle to name one thing he does brilliantly. He does everything well, no explosive pace to speak of, decent ball striking technique, his intelligence on a pitch is elite but hard to explain to someone who doesn't get the game, heads the ball well, passes very well

Key is, he shows what you can do if you give yourself the best chance. Stay fit, work hard, take your medicine, trust your coaching when your chance comes and believe in yourself. Sounds easy doesnt it

My favourite non-Charlton player since R9. He is so good

If he's injured in the summer we might as well not bother going. Pretty much every other English striker right now is in shocking form. The top English scorers in the PL this season are Calvert-Lewin and Welbeck, and both have 1 open play goal in 2026.

Toney is the top scorer in Saudi but not sure if Tuchel is going to pay much interest to that. He is at least in form though.
