Miles Leaburn - Signs New 3 Year Contract (p77)

How many target man type strikers are good in the air and at holding the ball up when they are 22? It’s clearly skills that are developed through experience, learning how to use your body and battle with centre backs. It’s not something that develops in academy football because he will be much bigger and stronger than every centre back he faced. Centre backs in the championship are another level physically to league 1 too which makes it even harder for him, I think he has improved at that side of the game but the step up in level means it isn’t really reflected in what we are watchingDOUCHER said:
Not a good comparison at all but if you want to be a good championship target man, he was one, regardless of the attributes - Mark Hughes was a good target man a level up but not particularly great in the air - Stockley was a standard league 1 target man but much better in the air than miles and probably Hughes - my point is, what is Miles stand out skill/s ? He's good on the deck for a very big man but poor in the air for a very big man and at holding it up - i hope Miles proves me wrong and becomes a good all round player - maybe someone like Mateta at Palace should be his target - a good all-rounder with the added bonus of being very big.Sword65pf said:Don’t think Leaburn v kermogant is a good comparison really, kermogant was a better all round player than miles, miles needs to learn very quickly how to use his size against the quality of defenders he’s up against now, and be more clever,he doesn’t have to be in a tussle every time, he has the ability to turn and shoot but doesn’t do it enough. The miss Saturday was appalling though there are no excuses for that miss.
Leaburn at the moment is still at his best when the ball is played into his feet, which he doesn’t get very often. He wins a good amount in the air but at the moment the direction of his headers is where he is lacking (though I think some blame could be put on the lack of runners around him in recent games). If he improves his hold up play and heading ability then I think he will be a very good player at this level, both will get better with experience

@Braziliance would it be possible for you to edit some extra goals and wins into our games aswell ?11

Leaburn has had 3 years at a prime age to build physically, his strength heading and hold up play really hasn’t improved that much so no guarantee he will get better in those areas.NabySarr said:

I know Mbick is playing easier opposition but the way he plays he actually tries to play like a target man and use his strengths opposed to Leaburn who looks like that’s the last role he wants to play0 -
I just don’t understand it - in jest or not.Nicholas said:When he missed, Brum fans sang f'ing useless and a few Charlton joined in in jest, nothing sinister just a laugh becuase the miss was so horrendous. Didn't feel like anyone meant it in a nasty way.
I think it goes back to the point made earlier about Leaburn and TC vs. the likes of Gunter.Going 1-0 down at a place like Birmingham would’ve spelled the end of our hopes of getting anything in those days. But Nathan Jones teams are different.
Whether in jest or not and whether they hear it or not (they do), it’s baffling to me that our own would actively bash our team’s confidence and therefore reduce our chances of getting back into the game.
Why not, in that moment, a big chant for Tanto for creating a chance out of nothing in the first place? Imagine how much of a boost he’d get from hearing that.13 -

Fair enough, thanks for your apology, and I am sorry for saying "if it helps you sleep" as that was a bit of a micro aggression, it just annoyed me that someone believed I would do that.Weegie Addick said:
I’m travelling today but will aim to watch the vlog properly later. In these days of AI I’m maybe overly sceptical of certain online content. I apologise to @Braziliance for implicating him in that having seen his explanation. However, it’s now being said by him and others that it was only a few of our fans and in jest, brushing it off. That’s not the tone of the comment above and the response from Elfsborg shows how quickly and easily this stuff escalates.ElfsborgAddick said:

Trying not to justify our fans who boo our own players, but by all accounts, we are a timid/patient bunch compared to other more 'passionate fan bases'.Callumcafc said:Lovely to hear our own fans chanting “fucking useless” at him when he missed yesterday. And then the same blokes wonder why TC doesn’t want to acknowledge them when he scores later that same game.
Miles and TC's goal returns would have been getting pelters at certain clubs far sooner than we have done.
End of the day people pay a lot of money to watch blokes earn a lot of money m, so when they don't perform, and miss open goals, you can understand the frustration.
I don’t think it's nice, but we are extremely lenient. The same ones booing will just have to accept the cold shoulder however when our players do finally perform.
When fans have an 18 hours day and spent £150 going to the game they're entitled to be f***** off.Our young players aren’t perfect but imo it’s not going to help to call them out on social media. The witch hunt from some quarters on TC has been horrible and potentially damaging to his confidence and relationship with the fans overall. Miles will know more than anyone that it was an awful miss. It really isn’t going to help our cause to scapegoat him for it. The clue is in the name - supporters.
If I am honest, I don't have the capacity to edit that well, but I wouldn't anyway.1 -
The problem is he's spent a big chunk of those 3 years out injured, so he's not been able to use most of that time to develop those aspects of his game, as he's been having to try to get back to where he was before the injury.Crispywood said:

Bad miss, a miss is a miss though, hope that kind of stuff can be coached out of him, and hope he puts it behind him quickly.
The last thing we need to do right now is get on our players backs, just hope it was a heat of the moment stuff from the fans, none of our players should be getting abuse.
ML has bags of potential, and whilst I’m convinced he’s a very good league one striker.
I’m not convinced he’s at championship level, yet….
but hope he can grow into it, and improve.4 -
Not really comparing him with Peter Crouch but it took him a long time to come good, in fact i remember Chris Perry beating him in the air a few times when he was a youngster, as many others have said, i don't think he should be starting games each week but I'm sure Nathan Jones plays him for his aerial ability at defending corners as well.3

To put things into perspective Crouch dealt with entire crowds screaming that he was a freak every time he touched the ball when he was the same age as Leaburn.0
-
How does that put things in perspective? It's just also terrible. Did it have any effect on Crouch? Yep, here's a quote from an article two years ago: 'To an outsider, Crouch seemed to deal with it remarkably well – letting the jibes bounce off him, making sure he shut the crowd up with his goals. But it still hurt in those early days, and sometimes he would cry at night'. He's still talking about the effect it had on him now all those years later. Miserable.SantaClaus said:To put things into perspective Crouch dealt with entire crowds screaming that he was a freak every time he touched the ball when he was the same age as Leaburn.
What Crouch didn't have to deal with when he was younger though was a pervasive social media culture where you could get abused at a game and then go home and find that you're receiving abusive messages and being talked about negatively for the entire time inbetween matches before it starts all over again. It must be horrible for a young player to see that kind of stuff, especially when he then gets told it's just part of the game and a fair trade for being paid well.11 -
I don't see why you're explaining to me how bad the freak chants were and how they effected Crouch? It was pretty implicit in my original post.0

Latest on Cawley’s Substack:Nathan Jones has talked about Miles Leaburn’s missed chance at Birmingham City and reckons the Charlton Athletic striker only needs small gains to be a “top, top performer” in the Championship.8

Reminds me of NJ just a year ago saying we’re nearly a very good L1 side. We then went on our promotion winning run.Callumcafc said:Latest on Cawley’s Substack:Nathan Jones has talked about Miles Leaburn’s missed chance at Birmingham City and reckons the Charlton Athletic striker only needs small gains to be a “top, top performer” in the Championship.4 -
Made some people (including me) look very silly when he said that and was proved right.Scoham said:

I've learned my lesson, so i'll trust him on this one4 -
Hopefully he’s right - at the moment, he looks nowhere near this level.2
-
I think he has a point in that the two things he needs to work on are physicality and finishing. The finishing I think is actually a confidence issue, if he gets a couple he'll fly. The physicality should be teachable and Hylton is perfect to help with that.4
-
Leaburn needs a proper partner with him. That can be Tanto, who needs a proper run in the team. Leaburn isn’t and never will be a big physical presence. He’s not his dad.0
-
Great man management from NJ. And tbh I agree with him, leaburn has all the attributes to be a top striker at this level.7

It's not easy to drag a 6'7 frame around the pitch. If he adds more muscle, he'll be able to press even less.5
-
Have said it many times on here but I 100% agree re Leaburn. He will fly at some point this season if he keeps playing and then our fans will realise the quality he has. I find it amazing people cannot see it.11
-
Fantastic today. Won 13/17 aerial duels and the most duels of anyone on the pitch with 15. Proper target man performance18
-
Really encouraging1
-
Personally thought that was his best performance for a long while and was my man of the match. He seemed to be really up for it all over the pitch not just up top6
-
His best game at Championship level. NJ working wonders with those press conference comments.8
-
He’ll sleep well tonight. He put a real shift in and played a big part in battling for the win.6

Became a man today, awesome0
