Charlton Athletic vs Coventry City
New Years Day - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: Josh Smith

Introduction
Football can be a very cruel mistress at times, it can get to the point where you think that things could possibly start going your way, you could even see a point rescued at the death, but still that mistress can find a way to turn around a kick you squarely in the bollocks. I guess in some regard that we can't overly complain, given the plenty of occasions that we've scored late goals over the last twelve months... Tomorrow its New Years Day, a chance for fresh beginnings, a new start... We could do with it.

The Opposition
Name: Coventry City (1st) - Manager: Frank Lampard
Ground: Ricoh Arena
Previous League Result: Coventry 0-2 Ipswich

What isn't handy is the fact that we'll be starting 2026 in the hardest possible away, with the Addicks welcoming the League Leaders to the Valley, what doesnt help either is the fact that Coventry make the trip to South East London this Thursday, looking to put their own promotion push back on track. Defeat against Ipswich on Monday evening was their first loss at home this season, whilst the Sky Blues have started to stumble on the road a bit of late, they make the trip to the corner of London, having picked up just two draws in their last three matches on the road, and since the end of November, have just three wins in total.

The first of those three wins, came of course against Charlton, who for 30-minutes looked comfortable against the side who have ran away with the Championship in the first half of the season. Had Amari'i Bell remained on the pitch for a lot longer, then thing could have been very different that Saturday afternoon, with Coventry eventually running out 3-1 winners.

In terms of the danger men for Coventry, and Jack Rudoni will be a key man to watch, our good start to the game at the Ricoh was partly caused by the fact that Bell was able to mark him out of the match, and with the Defender playing the entirety of Mondays game against Portsmouth, it could be a tactic that we opt to rely upon once more. Looking at the difference between the line-up from November, and Coventry's last match, and they will be able to rely upon American Striker: Haji Wright who was absent for the reverse clash, whilst Brandon Thomas-Asante will remain a key loss, what with Adam Armstrong (Southampton) having scored just two goals more than the Coventry star man.

Charlton Team News
It wasn't just the fact that we lost to a relegation rival on Monday night, but also the manner of how we lost to them... Equalising so late in such an important game, and you're going to think that you've just about done a job, so to lose it within the next ten seconds is going to be brutal. Hopefully we'll see a response on the pitch as a result this coming Thursday afternoon, and whilst the form guide will of course point towards a Coventry win, form is another aspect of the game that the cruel mistress can often laugh at, just take Wolves at Man Utd last night for example... Stranger Things can happen.

Sadly though we don't have any Footballers who can control the ball with their mind, but there were positives from Mondays defeat on the South Coast; Both Reece Burke and Amari'i Bell made their return from injury, and for the most part, our defence looked stronger as a result. However both played many more minutes than what were expected, so I would be surprised if we were to see both from the start on New Years Day, as a result I'd expect Keenan Gough to make a second start at this level, especially with Kayne Ramsay now absent with a hamstring injury... Elsewhere and I'd expect very few changes, Joe Rankin Costello made a claim for a place in Midfield, whilst Harvey Knibbs could be opted from the start, after getting on the score sheet once more... Just with very little reward.

Kaminski
Gough - Jones - Bell
Bree - Coventry - Costello - Campbell
Knibbs
Kelman - Leaburn

Substitutes Bench: Mannion - Gillesphey - Burke - Apter - Carey - Berry - Docherty - Olaofe - Fullah

This would have been a free hit if we didn’t balls up our must not lose games.

That in turn has switched this game to a must win.

Sounds ridiculous to say when we are playing the league leaders but it’s our own fault for screwing up two massive games.

    Must win.

Can people stop bring their personal lives on to these threads, dont need to know how you plan on spending New Years Eve
Lets just focus on the game at hand tomorrow please!!
Always you getting offended when anyone says anything negative (and realistic at this stage) about our current form. 🙂

Who says I get offended...? :)
I'm just trying not to jump the gun, wouldn't want to say anything that makes me look like a twat now...
  • keep sticking your house on the oppo , you'll be rich i tell thee and you'd lose the odd house
  • Hoping for a draw. On current form that would be a very good result. 1-1

I admire your optimism. So on a serious note, I agree with you on the line up. Would like Apter to start over Bree, though. The latter hasn't set the world alight in a good while.
Would be incredible if Coventry were slogging it a bit after a home loss against the Tractor Boys and we could nick something out of this one. But I can't see us getting anything since we've been really bad since our loss at Wrexham and Coventry will look to bounce back.

Looking forward to looking like a twat now! 😎

I'm not overly optimistic, I just can't stand when people throw in the towel too easily
I thought Apter over Bree or on the Left as well, but I think Mason-Clark would have a field day
I'll be happy with a draw, not just because of where Coventry are, but because if I was Frank Lampard I'd want to see them bounce back with three points after Ipswich, they need it, else they could implode.

  • Would not surprise me if we win this  typical after losing to norwich and pompey

That's fair, mate. Not that I can see it happening, but couldn't JRC play in place of Bree, hypothetically speaking? Can see him being a bit better than Apter is, defensively.

Anyway, game on and Happy New Year!

What a surprise it will be if we get something from this game. Always hoping for a win. Would take a draw. Just want to see a decent effort and performance. Without sounding negative I do think we lack quality here and Coventry will run out comfortable winners. Try and keep the faith though! 1-0 Leaburn.

We did well for the first 30 minutes up there but then the second half was like a training exercise for them.
Tomorrow will be a stroll for them.

No idea what the result will be but expect Bell to do a man marking job like he did at their place. Coventry score from ridiculously low xG scenarios so hopefully our CB’s have their blocking boots on

Have not been able to bear reading the post-match Pompey thread after being at Fratton Park.  It really was the most unjones-like end to a game where we completely swtiched off for the final 30s.  Did not help that we were giving it to the Pompey fans at the time and ended with egg on faces.

For Coventry, 80% likely away win, 15% draw, 5% Charlton win.

Sorry to upset the happy clappers but it's going to be a very one sided game. 0-0 at half time will be a bonus. UTA.

I watched the Coventry v Ipswich game on SKY. They have a few problems themselves. They were wide open on their right and Ipswich took full advantage. Jack Clarke rinsed their Right Back Milan Van Ewick, who can’t defend one-against-one on his outside. This is the game for TC to come of age. Hopefully Nathan will set us up for TC to isolate Van Ewick and then get the ball to him at every opportunity.

Until we get balance, especially at left wing back, then we are placing a round peg into that square hole, at the moment it's Campbell, which limits us going forward. I would go for Gillisphey in his usual, left of the three and Bell into the wing back position. I agree with FA, that risking Burke over these two games is a non-starter so we shoe horn Gough into that position, personally I think we should tell Hibernian to ram their subs bench up their arse and bring Zach Mitchell back, correct me if I'm wrong, but one start in three months is not doing the player or this club any good and the argument on whether he is ready is settled by the fact that we are using Gough. If Campbell is not in the wing back position then I would play him up top with Kelman and Carey behind that front two. One more thing, I'm hoping Rankin Costello is fit enough for two games, otherwise bring Docherty back, then the team is pretty close to our early season first eleven. As for the result, Coventry will let you play but stopping them going forward has been beyond better teams than us, a draw please please please.

TC this season isn’t going past players (unfortunately) he is getting the ball, stopping and passing it back for some very strange reason
  • Weirdly optimistic, I think NJ will get a response out of the players and we will play well enough to earn a draw,
