Joe Rankin-Costello signs from Blackburn

I tell ya what, I get asked a lot do we have any tricky players, and my answer is always no (cause TC is mainly pace, Fullah is a sub, and Carey is off the boil) but we really have one here in Costello.
I don't know how to say this without sounding like I am throwing shade on the rest of our squad, but he looks like a real footballer in how he moves with the ball compared to the rest? Just has that instinct and split decisions you can't teach.
Really, really hoping he can stay fit, as this might be the player who can drag us through games and pull a goal out of his arse.
Oh and btw, he loves a goal against Millwall. I said to him I am expecting him to bag against the scum, and he said he does love a goal against them so he will see what he can do.
Looking forward to Blackburn away 👍🏻12 -

Sounds as well though he didn't get in because of the good start and then because Jones persevered with those he knew.
I translated this for my mate who doesn't speak English.Sounds as well though he didn't get in because of the good start.
This came out the same and my mate approved that thinking.
and then because Jones persevered with those he knew.
This came out as "Jones was pig-headed and prejudiced in favour of his cronies."

Didn’t get in for 20 games because he’s the only player who actively looks to play forward and looks like he can actually play with the ball at his feet too much creativity for Jones tends to be allergic to these types of players in his system4

Possibly he just wasn't fully up to speed either physically or in terms of "Jonesball" - NJ pushes physicality even further than most and has a very specific and demanding style he wants players to use. JRC wouldn't be the first and probably not the last example of a very talented player to struggle to get with the program at first.Crispywood said:Anyone else trying to figure out how he could get spanked around by a L2 midfield then go up against the likes of Eccles, Grimes and Rudoni and makes them look like toddlers4 -
Never knew that Maggie Thatcher was an Addick.fenlandaddick said:Nicked someone's coat.

Only word of caution is that two weeks is a small sample size. Bree looked like premier league level player his first four games but has reverted back to his true potential. JRC has played a long time in the championship. He has proven a solid but unspectacular championship level player historically.6

All of a sudden we look like a side that can look dangerous going forward and create multiple chances.
The flick through to Leaburn, the pass through to TC in the area, the dribble and shot, and of course the intelligence to back up Kelman for the goal.
Do we really need new forwards this window, or was it the case that all we really needed was a playmaker, who could bring our forwards into play?
JRC may well have saved the board a lot of money!1 -
He was excellent but I'd still look to bring in another CM. If we lose JRC for any period of time we're back to Anderson / Doc.

Think it’s definitely a thing with Jones where it takes players a lot longer to earn his trust that they can play the system, which is why he favours signing former players because he trusts them right away.Injury played its part, but I’d imagine the main reason we haven’t seen Costello is that he’s needed to show more that he can do what Jones wants out of possession in training
I remember Blackburn fans saying he was one of their best players in terms of technical ability. Just didn’t really fit any position well enough to play. Would imagine a lot of work has gone in behind the scenes with Costello learning what he needs to do in that role in our system which is why he’s not been trusted until now3 -
Which is what we need, when many of our players are L1 ones who may or may not step up a level.Bostonaddick said:Only word of caution is that two weeks is a small sample size. These last couple of games he’s been fantastic, equally in his previously limited appearances he’s been dreadful .
Hopefully this newer version can continue , he defies reality with the way he beats players , it all feels a bit Matrixy with the speed and movement as he glides somehow past players, unfortunately he then shoots in slow motion .
unbelievable turnaround, he’s been magnificent these last two and I never saw that coming .0 -
Goes without saying he’s not very quick, but what he does well is transfer his weight from left to right which throws defenders off balance which creates time for himself to pass in tight spaces. Also his attitude must be bang on because he’s had to wait a long time, he’s obviously got that fighting spirit which is why he’s been a championship player.2

Fair play completely proved me wrong last 2 games. Keep it up JRC!1

Shame he never got a look in at RWB, while Blackburn fans said he was at his mazy best there.1

The last couple of performances have been great, you do wonder why he hasn’t been playing.

He seems a really humble and hard working lad. Not been sulking or throwing his toys out of the pram. I hope he continues with his current form. His experience at this level is crucial. Well done JRC.2

Just refreshing to see a midfielder who is positive on the ball3
